The bed and breakfast is only about 10 minutes away from Bradley Airport and in the quaint town of Suffield. They have a grocery and some restaurants across the street, but little traffic in the neighborhood. It's such a great getaway spot. Breakfast in the morning was also SPECTACULAR. Blueberry pancakes, bacon and eggs, with a fruit salad to start. Lorraine really treats you like family when you stay here. I would be honored to be a guest here again. Thanks so much Lorraine! We were traveling with a newborn baby, so the mold was a big deal for us and felt like a safety concern. The hosts were kind enough to refund part of our trip. This house is highly rated on Yelp and other hotel websites, but I think the rating is for the personality and hospitality of the hosts, not the quality of the accommodations. It's great if you want to feel like a guest in someone's house, but not if you want to stay in a nice place. I recommend Airbnb if you want the "house feel," or you could just book a hotel (which is what we ended up doing).

The hotel was located one block away from the theatre and was very convenient. We showed up about two hours early and not able to check in early but they did hold our luggage for us. The hotel is beautiful, charming, clean, and full of historic value. Everything in our room worked to perfection. For an old hotel, our room was very spacious and very quiet. We took advantage of their valet parking for a nominal charge. Attached to the hotel is Bar Max which appeared to be a beautiful spot to have a drink. The hotel is within walking distance to shops, downtown, and restaurants. The price of the hotel was shockingly reasonable compared to some of the other hotels we have stayed in across America. The valet staff was the most friendly of everyone. The front desk staff was not warm and inviting and did not mention anything about the complimentary coffee or tea which was 10 feet from them. However, if we did return to Hartford, we would most likely stay here.

How was an expensive hotel this unprepared for guests arriving? Valet parking was unavailable when we pulled up in the rain. Instead of explaining our options, the valet yelled, "I've been here since 6 a.m." People were left walking through the rain with their luggage because parking was overwhelmed. Inside, the check-in line was roughly 30 people deep. Guests were angry, the front desk employee was visibly flustered, and there was no visible management taking charge. I ended up organizing the check-in line myself. I was also trying to calm people down because the young woman working the desk clearly needed help. At one point, when a man came up to retrieve a bag he'd checked, I warned him that he should find someone else to help him if he didn't want a mutiny from the people waiting. That is how badly the lobby was being managed. We were told the shift changes at 3 p.m. What was management's plan for the guests arriving between 2 and 3? No one apologized or offered a useful solution. If management reads this, please check the cameras from 2 to 3 p.m. today. Look at the line and the lobby, then tell me whether you find that acceptable at a hotel charging these prices. Checking into a hotel should feel like being welcomed and taken care of. Instead, this felt like standing in an airport after a canceled flight, trying to find someone who could help. People were walking through the rain to get to weddings. How would the couples feel seeing what their guests encountered after being told to stay here? Hospitality is a profession. People study and train for it at places like Johnson & Wales because doing it well takes skill and care. Where was that training here, and where was the management support for the staff? Guests should not have to organize a hotel's check-in line while an overwhelmed employee is left to face the crowd alone. The Goodwin's response today was pathetic.

They were all friendly and helpful. Everything was managed very efficiently and despite being busy everything ran smoothly. The hotel itself has a couple years on it (not old enough to need a remodel) but was well maintained and really nice. Everything was clean and didn't show signs of wear. The bed was extremely comfortable, my wife and I slept like royalty (which is not usually the case even at home). The bathroom was well maintained and spacious. Lastly the breakfast. While it had the normal "Hilton" layout the quality was better than usual. Sure the scrambled eggs were the typical powdered eggs but there were options that were unique. Such as the French toast sticks, lemon poppyseed and blueberry scones, zucchini nut muffin and a few other things I can't recall. Definitely recommend staying here and I am adding it to my Hilton favorites in case I am back in the area. If you stay I hope your experience is as good as ours was.
