I messaged her on a Monday--she responded the next day and apologized and told me "sometimes with the lightning it ends up being a bit yellow" (that's never happened to me). Requested I give it a few more washes and another week and she would then tone it. (Toning would darken--not lighten). She said she looked over my photos and said when I left the salon she thought she did what I wanted--she did however it washed out. I messaged her to let her know that I went some place else. Where I was informed that she did not leave it on my hair long enough and it was not blended well at all. I had paid $360 (with tip, to Mallory). She not only didn't offer to refund ANY of my money, she also didn't even apologize that I had went someplace else. I would never go back to her based on the lack of response and refund. Terrible.

I found this salon by looking online at cleveland's top hair salons and this was ranked in the top 5. Now, historically I have not had the smoothest rides when it comes to hair salons. We got there a bit early and they got her in right away. She showed her stylist a photo of the kind of hairstyle she wanted, which was braids in the front connecting to a bun in the back (I'm doing a poor job of describing it, but it's a fairly simple style). The stylist started doing something, then undid it because it didn't look right, then tried something else again, and was clearly struggling a bit with my cousin's Asian hair (very straight and sleek). I don't blame her for this, since our hair texture can be tricky to work with if you don't have a lot of experience with it. After about half an hour of this she asked a senior stylist for help, which I thought was very appropriate. But then the senior stylist said to my cousin, "You need to make up your mind about what you want to do, because we can't be trying a million different styles. We're wasting a lot of time." I had been watching the whole time from the waiting area, and her attitude and tone of voice with my cousin made me really angry because she was trying to blame the problem on my 17yo cousin. I didn't say anything at the time because I didn't want to make the situation worse by making them mad, thereby risking them messing up my cousin's hair. The senior stylist did end up making it work out and the final hairstyle looked good (hence the 4 stars), but her attitude the whole time trying to make my cousin feel like she had done something wrong left a bitter taste in both our mouths.

I think this stylist is very talented and has done some great work before but I'm not a regular of hers and the other people who came in were obviously a personal prior so I don't think my hair was really taken as seriously especially since I had prepaid. I did try to communicate gently that I was unsatisfied with my hair but she wasn't really open to exploring options to help me be happy with it, they just told me my hair was unhealthy and there wasn't a lot we could do. I also don like to argue with people about their professions because it feels unfair to tell them how to do what they are trained for, but at the end of the day I really don't like my hair and it's affected my self esteem pretty heavily. This was the first time I've ever liked my haircut without having to "get used to it" for a few weeks (even though I usually go to salons)! Most places either cut my hair way in a way that's way too feminine or way too masculine, but I was able to explain what gender expression I was going for and go from there!! But the best part for me was how safe, calm, and welcoming the whole experience made me feel. Jen was super sweet and asked me for my pronouns (you can also select "nonbinary" as your gender when signing up!! Which is so validating!!) and the prices aren't based on gender, just on the services you pick!! Jen also made me tea and gave me an arm/hand massage!! I normally don't feel comfortable with people touching me even if I know them, but I felt comfortable enough to say yes to that!! I didn't even know that LGBTQ+ inclusive salons existed and I'm so so happy to have found a place that's so comfortable and affirming!!
