They are busy but that means they are good. I took my car (Subaru) to the dealership Gillman Subaru of North Houston) several times because I kept getting a tire pressure alert. If I could give less than one star I would! 4 times they had to change my brakes and I had to take it somewhere else to get it fixed. Come to find out what I paid for was not done, lots of excuses and no conversation. I took the receipts to review and find out what was the real, Randy did not want to chat about it at all. Oh it could be anything Jeannie, so you mean to tell me that new breaks in 2 weeks used up 7mm and a new pad is 12mm. No work was done, the excuse was well maybe a screw was stuck in there anything could happen. WHAT!? BAD BAD customer service. I should of stopped using them more than a year ago, this is not the first negative experience I have had with this shop on 2 of my other autos. On My Acura I had them flush out the radiator and the radiator hose was not clamped down and I found out a less than 30 minutes later along side I45 with an over heated motor on my way out of town. Issues with my other car same type of crap! BUT then I kept going back some might think you got what you deserved, I really wanted to believe that they were mistakes. However I am really seeing now it is lack of......fill in the blank... whatever.. I used to refer all my clients to them as I am in real-estate but I would not refer anyone to this shop. The owner is not the challenge he at least listens it is the son that is the issue. He says oh I did the work myself! BIG LIE. his hands are cleaner than mine. I hate being lied too! There is no reason for it. It happened and they did not want to acknowledge the work was bad. The shop I did go to the warranty is 3 years 36K miles NOW THAT IS A WARRANTY NOT 90 DAYS... All of this happened within 30 days.. did not even make it to the 90 days. I have everything time stamped and dated. NO RESOLUTION WAS OFFERED JUST I DONT KNOW WHAT TO TELL YOU. LOL I bet you don't; this is not the first time I caught Randy lying. He is not good at it. read more

We have been using Ray's for 14 years They have repeatedly done great work, given us honest advice and completed jobs quickly and fairly at reasonable rates. Our radiator recently cracked on our car just days after I was in an accident that totaled our other vehicle. Ray's was able to replace our radiator that same day allowing us to get back to all the things we needed to do and places we planned to go. I had several things that needed to be done. I got an estimate, and Ray told me a couple of things I had asked about wasn't necessary. A previous estimate I got from Caliber Automotive gave me a list of things that needed to be done, and one was that all the engine mounts needed to be replaced. Old school repair shop, with no frills, but friendly folks and a hassle free business approach. My front brakes were soft, and grinding so I stopped in to have them take a look. They were very welcoming, and went right to work in getting my brake pads replaced. I was in and out in less than an hour, was quoted and paid a fair price without any pressure to "upsell" or tack on " needed work" like other places. While there, another woman came in with her car overheating, and rather than give her the run around, they explained what they saw, how they'd fix it and then because the repair would take longer than they were open, they gave her a ride home so she didn't have to walk home in the heat. We will definitely be making Ray's our 'go to' repair shop from here on. read more

I like Ray. He's old school, back to basics, honest and integral in his dealings. What he quotes you is what you pay and he has a great staff on hand. What I like most is that it's a first come first serve basis. No appointment needed. And they're open on Saturday's until 3. There are many auto repair shops within the 3 mile radius and Ray's has earned my business by demonstrating good craftsmanship. read more

Pretty iffy place and here's why. My Acura was making a very obvious noise -- an axle or bearing went out. They drove my car "in the neighborhood" and couldn't replicate the noise. Instead I was quoted a noise my car most definitely doesn't make (a thump at stop sign -- engine mounts). Due to holiday time and my travel fam plans, my car spent over a week at a shop because they couldn't hear the noise I easily hear. Couldn't they let someone else drive and listen?! Finally, I had to go in there myself and drive it WITH them. Turns out they didn't even take the car to 40 mph!!! Noise is best heard at 60mph. I thought they'd at least take my car on nearest highway and give it a good listen, not just take it around nearest stop sign. Thing 2. The person upfront manning the phone doesn't know much about cars or communicates well with the mechanics in the back. My car was confused numerously with another similar make car they had at the shop when I called for updates. This was frustrating to find out, as the OTHER car is the one that had the quoted engine mounts issue. I asked for a written quote so I could shop around and compare, and all I got was a hand written scrap of paper. This isn't gonna be accepted by any other shop as a legit quote to compare. Maybe this place is for old folks who dunno a thing about cars. A guy in front of me in line was paying them to change his battery. You can do that for FREE at AutoZone!! No shop needed, a most basic thing you can even do yourself. The one good thing -- their warranty is for a year. That's much better than Just Brakes' 90 days/4,000 miles (don't ever go there, they use cheapest parts). Not saying this place is a total rip off, saying that you can find a higher quality place that does more and gives longer warranty on parts and labor. The place I go to in Austin gives a 2 yr/24,000 mile warranty on most work they do -- and that's a nationwide warranty due to their enrollment in NAPA program -- so shop around and I'm sure you can find a similar shop here in Houston. read more

Great honest, friendly repair place. I had been taking my cars to Service First for years, but was skeptical when they wanted to charge me $600-$700 for a "Transmission leak". Ray checked it out and fixed the issue for free (it wasn't a transmission leak). It's a family owned place that is quick and very reasonably priced for all services. Got in right away. Its an old school mom and pop business, so I felt good about giving my business to them. However, the cost was the exact same as the dealer. Which I find strange considering they charged me $125 in labor for a job that took one hour. Pretty high labor charges for a place like this which left me feeling like I was over charged. I also asked them if they could put on some new windshield wipers I had purchased. They said no problem. When I get in the vehicle the windshield wipers are still in the back and hadn't been put on. Don't go here, go to McKay's down the road near old Louetta. Better service, and the owner won't talk your ear off. Objective: I took my 2003 mustang in to get an alignment. First off, the guy stalled my car going on the lift(supposedly he'd been working for the owner for 20 years? you'd think in 20 years he'd have drivin enough standards even for a short distance to handle an oem clutch? I guess not...). Not a big deal but sort of looks bad on a mechanic. Second, he scratched the shit out of one of my wheels with the alignment reflective plate/sensor. Not cool. Thirdly he SNAPPED A 1/2 Steel tie rod trying to turn it to adjust it with vice grips...obviously he didn't try to loosen the jam nut. Yeah there might have been a tiny bit of surface rust on the nut but any GOOD mechanic will recognize that and use some rust penetrant/lube oil to assist. Nope, he just tried to muscle it out of laziness and broke it. The part ended up being obsolete due to it being a sort of "special" part (2003 cobra rear IRS part). So I had to find one myself and replace it, MYSELF. The cherry on top? The mechanic said to hell with washing his hands before touching a customers car and left black grease all over the steering wheel, shift knob, brake handle and outside door handle. I went with them after auto zone was not able to help me. This is a non-car issue but it is still worth writing about. I am putting together my cycling bike and one of my pedals had the screw very tight to the point where I couldn't unscrew it. I struggled a lot so I needed help. I've been using Ray's for probably 30 years for all my mechanical work with a '86 Ford Taurus, '98 Jeep Wrangler, '98 Chevy Blazer & '06 Chevy Tahoe. In all cases, the work has been done as quoted with no upsells. I've come to know most of the mechanics over the years [Melvin & Hector particularly] and respect their ability along with Ray & Randy the owners. The Wrangler has been a wonderful vehicle but has Ray's many times for various things. Ray has diagnosed everything well & quoted the work fairly. In one instance, when a replacement aluminum radiator failed, he found a used bronze radiator & installed it at no charge. He has accepted some vehicles towed in with various problems including once when my wife came in with the Tahoe. She was treated with respect & the problem was fixed. Ray has experienced some drop-off in volume in the last 8 years with the slow-down in the economy which might explain his hourly repair rate. I believe the shop is worth the rate he charges. I'm willing to trade the super-comfortable physical experience you get in the dealer repair shops or the upscale shops for honest diagnostics & fair quotes. read more

I hung up the phone and drove straight to the garage. Upon arrival to leave my vehicle, the price went up 42% - $120 without any else changing. Spent over 600 for work and Ray's didn't completely fix the issue's with my car. We also have a new noise that we didn't have before.

On our way to visit friends in Spring, my wife and I noticed a disturbing noise coming from the front of our car. Our friends recommended we take it to Ray's as their family had been using Ray's for years. They were able to take our car for a test drive immediately and when they were unable to definitively diagnose the problem, they put it in the shop (also immediately) and went to work. The technician found that one of our tires was loose, tightened it up, and that was it. Even though they needed to put it on the lift and everything, they didn't charge us a penny and had us out of there in 20 minutes. They were friendly, efficient, honest, and we would take our car back there or recommend anyone else use them without hesitation. read more

I had taken on the task of replacing the rear hubs on my wife's Volvo. I had ordered the parts online and was ready to get it done. Long story short...I could not access the bolts without a lift, so I would have to take it somewhere. I just happened to drive by Ray's and stopped in to see if they could do the labor with my parts. They said no problem and quoted a very fair price. We have lived in the area for several years and have driven by the shop many times. Anyway, the work was done on time for the price quoted. What more could I ask for? Oh yea, they had to cut a bolt off because the head was stripped (not their fault, I knew it was stripped when I was working on it)....no charge for replacing the bolt even though it would have been totally legitimate to charge for it. So Ray will be working on the Volvo from now on. This is not a fancy service center with "advisors" trying to upsell you stuff you don't need, nor should it be. A good shop fixes cars without a lot of fluff, and that's what they do. It reminds me of the shops I used to hang out in when I was younger. read more
