Upon paying the bill, there was an automatic 18% tip added to the bill. We are good tippers and would have left at least that much (not because the service was good and not because we loved the food.) It wasn't the money I objected to, it was taking my right to determine what we would leave as a TIP (to insure promptness). It really ate at me. I called the restaurant where a women answered and told me the manager was too busy to speak to me, but she would have him call me back if I told her my problem. She became snippy and rude as I explained my issue. Later, she called back and in the same short and irritated way told me that the manager wouldn't talk to me, but they would return the tip to my credit card. I told her that was not the goal I had in mind. I wanted to let the owner/manager know that I don't like the policy of adding a tip without consent. She told me the policy was printed on the menu (I guess I was looking for food and missed the legal ease.) I suggested that the policy should be on a sign as you enter the restaurant so that people don't feel violated when you assign them an amount to leave the staff. She said, "So, do you want the refund?" I said, "yes", which kind of surprised me, but her attitude sent me over the edge.
