Not chatty. But Ray is a professional though, pays attention to details. I found my place. No appointments, closed on Tuesdays. But get there early, opens at 10 I believe. First come first serve, if you're not first he might have a couple customers ahead of you. It's worth the wait. read more

Hit or miss. No consistency. Long waits, changes prices, and changes services. If he is really busy he'll give you a quick haircut. If their is no line he'll take his time and give you a great haircut. If the place has more than 3 people then walk out! read more

Look no further, this is the place to go. Cuts always on point. Been going here for over 10 years even when I moved to the burbs, would still make the commute to get cut here. read more

He was rude and refused to cut my hair. Only a couple of customers in the place too, and he said he was too busy.

I have found a new place to get faded. I am not talking about a new spot for some libations. I am talking about getting my hair buzzed. Since I moved back to the city a few years ago, I find it harder and harder to go to my usual spot in Schaumburg. I discovered this spot by pure happenstance. This spot is about 200 feet away from Susie's on Montrose. If you have to ask what that is, I probably don't know you. I have driven past this place on countless occasions, and this spot is always busy on the weekends. I would see customers leaving, and they had a nice, clean, tight fade. So a few month back I decided to stop by this place and give it a shot. I went on a Saturday, so it was extremely busy. He is the lone barber here, and is a virtuoso with the clippers. He takes his time with each and every customer, so if you don't have patience don't bother coming here. He will also hook you up with your facial hair needs. Line up your beard, with a straight edge razor. I don't have nearly enough hair on my face to require this service from him, but I would go here if I did. This place gets the 5 star review. He is the MAN! read more

Update: came back for a repeat haircut and was turned down. He said he was not taking any new customers for the day (at 2:20pm). When I asked about a phone number (so I could call ahead as opposed to walking in) he said he didn't have one. Kind of strange but I guess that's the price you pay for good cheap haircuts. read more

Slow, Rude and a rip off. He is a "One man show" for a bad reason. He will pretend not to speak English. Can only handle 1 customer an hour. Claimed he doesn't do beards after completing one infront of my eyes. Does sub par beard trims. Is honestly barely qualified to do hair. Changes his prices higher based on customer. And will REFUSE to give change when paid. Ray tried to give himself a $27 tip for a $23 haircut because I paid with a $50. I will never give Ray Fade business ever again. I rate him 1 star because I can't rate lower. read more

Came in with my boyfriend and I am very impressed w Ray! He works very clean and a very nice guy. He is precise and takes pride in his work. The wait is a lil long, but very well worth it!!! Thanks for making my man clean cut and extra handsome!!! read more

See all

Nice guy, pretty cheap haircut 10dollars and does a pretty good job. Downsides: one barber, a line outside the door before he opens. NEVER opens on time but closer to 1030 and he takes forever to cut hair so you're usually waiting st least an hour if not 2/3. You have to stay the whole time, once you leave your spot in line is as well. If you can get in during the week with no wait you'll be in the chair half hour -45 minutes for a simple cut. I only come here if I'm on a pinch and need a haircut on Sunday. In 1.5 hours today he is still working on his second customer. Montrose and Milwaukee is toms salon... $7 haircuts; just as good, multiple barbers, in and out in 20 minutes usually. Closed Sunday. read more

I've been coming here for over a year and every time is a new experience. There are times when I leave because I understand that if Ray is busy and has 3-4 persons ahead of me, I may not get in. This is a great spot for guys who are not easily offended by Rays abnormal social behavior towards people. If you happen to catch him on a slow day, you'll understand why people keep coming back. It's almost like the golden ticket for a haircut. Once you're in the chair, all the noise around the "waiting" experience becomes irrelevant. Good luck! read more

This guy takes care of his customers. Excellent with a straight razor. Blends, bald fades, trims, touch-ups, lineups... Look no further... This man just handles business... You're gonna feel ten times better when you walk out of his shop... read more

Ray gives an excellent hair cut. Super methodical, and precise. He is quiet, low key, and doesn't talk much. I love getting my hair cut here; no small talk chit chat while getting cut. I appreciate that. He rarely does kids (i think only if he knows the parent, or if it's slow), so don't go in there with your kids and get upset if he doesn't cut their hair. Why get upset at a barber who doesn't do kids? This is a Mens Barber shop. Just go somewhere else. Since you can't make an appt, there is often a wait. Many times Ray takes 30-45min per customer depending on the difficulty of the fade. So, you can easily spend 1.5hours waiting for that $10 cut. He runs the shop by himself. Sometimes if there are already several people waiting, and another customer walks in, he'll advise that customer that he is too busy and to come back another time . Ray has posted biz hours, but he needs to take breaks, eat, maybe run out for an errand etc.. This is not a big shop with multiple employees. Its just Ray. So don't get pissed if he doesn't adhere strictly to the biz hours on the sign. If he raises his price to $20 (which is really what he should charge due to his skill) then likely the wait-time would go down. Yes the wait is annoying; i'm lucky and kinda live close by, and will drive by and peek in the window to see how busy he is before coming in. read more

Went in for haircut and apparently he doesn't cut kid's hair but has plenty of pictures doing so. Racist much

I see this place has rave reviews. I'm a bit surprised. As hard as this will be to believe I had never gone there before...it was my first time. I had taken my 6yr old son to get a haircut. He had one kid on the chair and 3 people waiting. I figured I would just wait. After about 10-15 minutes of having waited, the only guy that was there....the lone barber which I assume is the Ray guy walked up to me and my son and asked us to leave. Yeah! Me too! Uummm What? Excuse me? He said he had four people waiting and it'd be best my son and I leave. I felt demoralized to say the least. By far one of the most humiliating experiences I've ever had. I'm contemplating filing a report with the Better Business Bureau but honestly who has the time to do go through all that. It is what it is I guess! read more

I walk in at 4:30. There are about 3 or 4 people waiting. The sign says open until 8pm. This place is not by appointment. I sit down. He says, can I help you? I say I need a haircut. He says he doesn't have time. I say, time for a new barber. read more

Ray's barber is the best he does details he loves his job n he's really good at it he doesn't take preference in his customers like other barbers I've being coming here for years the wait is worth it read more

The guy is an asshole I went in for a haircut at 7 pm and they close at 8. I just took a seat and ray goes " I'm not giving no more haircuts today, I'm busy as hell" talk about piss poor customer service. What a way to treat a first time potential customer, and I didn't even say nothing read more

As good as it gets! I'm a boring white guy with a boring white guy haircut, but Ray is my go-to guy. He never rushes and always takes his time with each customer, no matter how many folks are waiting. It's that personal attention that really makes the difference. I also dig the conversations and atmosphere. No frills, just good haircuts and good people. As a guy who never really felt comfortable in the barber shop, I've found a new home. FORGET Super Cuts, Ray Fade is the place to go! read more

Its Monday 1/30/12. 1st time at Rays. Nice and proffesional sevice and very detailed. Got a fade with a mustache and beard trimming and lining and am very happy. Will be back. read more

Does a great job, long wait, but worth it. I noticed he's clean too, changes the blade, on the razor, with every haircut.

In theory an $8 haircut seems to be a good deal...except when you have to wait literally hours to get it. I live in very close proximity to this establishment, and like many barber shops in this neighborhoods, the cost of a simple haircut is about the same ranging from $7 to $9 dollars. However, most of these barbers seem to "hold" a spot whenever their buddies show up....today was a perfect example...I arrived just after 3pm, and at 4pm sharp, it was my turn, as I got up from my chair, after reading 3 magazines, another client shows up and the barber says, "He's next, then it's you" I said, "No thank you, I'd rather take my business elsewhere".....he proceeded to explain that this client of his was waiting outside in his car....am I the only one that thinks this practice sucks and is unfair???? I'd rather go to Lakeview or downtown and pay more for my haircut but know that I'm being treated fairly. read more

The reason why there is such a long wait is because this barber does a fantastic job at a great price. This barber shop is the equivalent of a tiny neighborhood restaurant that is packed during the lunch and dinner hours. I highly recommend this barber shop. read more

The guy is pretty good. If your looking for a decent fade, blowout, etc and are on a budget - Ray Fade is the place to go. Be prepared to wait awhile on a Saturday if you decide to stroll in around 11am. He has customers waiting outside the door at 9:50am waiting for him to open at 10. read more

Second hair cut, had to update again. I wish I could give him an additional star. It costs about ten bucks for the fade I get, I gave him twenty because his work his damn good. read more

I've been going to Ray for 12 years. He's been cutting hair since his early teens and takes a lot of pride in his work. Yes the wait sucks sometimes but just go during an off-peak time and you'll be fine. Besides, I'd much rather wait and get the highest quality fade as opposed to a shorter wait and "okay" fade. Lastly, Ray is quiet but he's a no nonsense guy...trustworthy, doesn't lie, or cheat, a very honest dude. read more
