Went here on a weekday. I was taken back when I realized the place is empty with three bored looking guys. Reluctantly I got in the chair and proceeded to receive a hair cut from a guy named Ben. I am a guy with a head of egg plant shape and receding hairline. So giving me a hair cut will be a challenge as is. I really got nervous when Ben started cutting my hair because he seemed slow like someone cutting hair for the first time. However, eventually the hair cut came to an end and looked fantastic. Ben was really excellent and may be he wasn't slow, he was just giving me the attention needed and not rushing through the haircut like everyone else i have been visiting up to this point. Possibly the best hair cut I ever got. If he can replicate again, he will be my barber until one of us die. Their price is reasonable and they were very nice and respectful. The metal rock music was interesting and I didn't mind it. The hair cut was great and I am grateful they exist. Will go there again and I highly recommend this place. read more

Frank gave me my first haircut 30 years ago, April 1981. My father has been getting his hair cut by Frank since 1976. For the exception of a few occasions, Frank has given me almost all of my hair cuts in my life. Only when I lived 400 miles away did other people cut my hair, even then I would try to get my hair cut when ever I was in Chicago. I have been searching for a barber that I can feel comfortable with and one that knows how to give excellent Haircuts. Frank is the man for the job! As you step into the shop you are greeted by Frank with a smile and a wave. The shop is clean and doesn't smell like hair or stale products, which is awesome! This IS your father's barber shop! The intersection of Montrose and Kedzie is the epicenter of the $5 haircut. They're everywhere! I decided to try some of these places since $5 is about what I spend on a pint at The Montrose Saloon. About the time I started getting the $5 haircut, I started hearing "hey, are you going bald?" "Why don't you try Rogain?" "What's up, old man!" Then I found Frank... When I saw the old fashion barber pole outside, I knew I had found the place! Mind you, the haircuts are over twice the other places in the neighborhood but Frank is a "barber" and not a "hair stylist". What's the difference? A barber is to a hair stylist as a violin is to a fiddle. It's the same thing executed differently. Frank is a kind man who has been cutting hair for around 50 years. He will remind you that he worked at a barber shop in the Music Box Theater building on Southport a long time ago. Recently he moved to his current location from across the street when a developer at his old location thought that this filthy urban intersection was the new Lincoln Park. I've seen a lot of people at Frank's since I've been going here. It's very popular w/ the police and fathers w/ their sons. However, I've never seen a woman in Frank's. This is a man's place! Of the many magazines on the table here, you won't see a Vogue or Us Magi zine, it's Car and Driver here. The haircuts are a lot more than just Frank using the clippers. He takes the time to deliver a quality haircut, finished w/ a hot Old Spice lather shave w/ a straight edged razor. I've been going to Frank's since I moved to the neighborhood from out of town in 1997. Since then, I've moved to Forest Park, but I continue to make the drive to see Frank. He's an exceptional barber: in 13 years I've never been dissatisfied. I love that he still uses hot shaving cream and a straight razor to shave the back of my neck and around my ears after the cut. But beyond being good at cutting hair, Frank is a really great guy who has created a warm and welcoming atmosphere in his shop. Many places with such a loyal clientele can seem unwelcoming to newcomers, but Frank makes sure that everyone seems welcome.
