What can I say about Petes! After my barber left the city to set up shop in Batavia (if ever that far west check out Beardsgaard Barbers) she recommended Petes to me. That had to be about 6? years ago at this point, and I don't plan on that changing anytime soon. I've never left disappointed and usually leave with a funny story or a couple new songs added to a playlist. I've had my hair and beard perfectly maintained by all 3 guys throughout the years and feel they always get exactly what I want. They even tell me I need to trim the beard up if they think it looks ridiculous (my wife appreciates this.) I wear a hat most days and usually go in to get cleaned up for special occasions, but they give you haircuts that last and grow out nicely. I always enjoyed sitting in the shop and listening to the banter for hours, but the appointments is a game changer, especially because I come from up north to get there, also the wife doesn't know about this feature yet which gives me a chance to hit the local bar while she thinks I'm still waiting to get cut. I've gone to Pete's for about 4 years now. It's become so ingrained that I don't even contemplate haircuts elsewhere. Pete, Johnny, and Jake are all excellent professionals that will give you a perfect haircut in about 30 mins. While the haircut itself is quick, the line can be long because of how great the place is. The shop is a comfortable environment to wait and work in, so if you have an off day it's a perfect place to come and get some work done while you wait for your haircut. Even if you don't have work, the barbershop itself is such a cool, fun environment that it is just an enjoyable place to be. Pete provides wifi, coffee, comics, beer, books, and enough wall decor that it's hard to get bored. All of the barbers have wonderful, eclectic taste in music and all are up for conversation. They also have appointment days now, if you prefer. Finally, Pete stocks quality hair products. The first time I got my hair cut by Pete, he gave me a thorough talking to about how the terrible products I was using were making my hair awful. Since I've started using what Pete stocks, my hair has never felt or looked better and all of my previous issues with dandruff went away completely. I've been coming to Pete's for 5 years now, and if that isn't a ringing endorsement, I don't know what is. Each of the three barbers here have figured out how to deal with my unruly locks and I can trust each of them to give me a good haircut. They are very forward and honest with advice on what styles actually suit your hair/head, which is not something I had experience prior to coming to Pete's. That means, that if you have curly hair like mine, and come in asking for the JTT cut, they're going to try their hardest to convince you that it's not the right cut for you (and guess what, they're right!). They are also experts on hair care and are happy to give you advice on how you can give yourself the healthiest head of hair possible. The shop has a real old-school vibe, where customers are comfortable chatting with the barbers and each other. There's beer, video games, comic books, great music, and genuine people. My beard was getting a bit too shaggy recently, and Pete's is just down the street from me, so I stopped by one Monday afternoon for a beard trim. Pete did a great job, and $10 was quite reasonable for the work. Be advised that its just a two-man shop, and Pete has a decent following, so you may wait. That Monday was particularly busy, so I was hanging out for two hours. On the flip side, the music is good and there is beer, so I was able to chill and catch up on my reading. I ended up indeed getting I guess what you would call a "high and tight" with a little bit of the "conservative" direction of fading from very short on the sides up to the longer 1- 2 inches on the top. Pete took me anyway and proceeded to give me a great cut and beard clean up. Went on to have a fantastic evening! Came back to Pete's last Friday (earlier this time, recommended) and received the same sharp looking cut and beard trim. I've sat on this one for a few days... I haven't had this negative of an experience in a long time and to add icing to the cake... now have to live with the worst haircut of my life. I trusted the perfect score this place had on yelp and cannot believe the level at which I was let down. #1 I asked for a very specific medium length haircut. I showed Johnny over four pictures of it. Evidently though... Johnny couldn't care less... because what I ended up getting was the shortest haircut I've had since I was in preschool. He basically took a sheep shear to the sides and back of my head. It basically looks like I have a buzz. I was further disappointed when the dude had the gusto to crack a joke that "people like me" come in and ask for only two kinds of haircuts... and that they should put a poster on the wall and just have people like me point to which one of those two styles they want... I haven't felt this slanted in a long time. So basically you are insinuating I have no style and don't deserve my individuality? This basically let me know before I'd even seen my hair after I put my glasses back on that it was going to be totally butchered. It was frankly ridiculous. WARNING! Evidently if you don't come off as a hardcore hipster, and pull the look off with a giant beard, you aren't esteemed enough to get a haircut here... #2 I should have known something was up before I sat down in the chair to get my head chopped up. Potential customers kept coming into the shop as I was waiting and were dealt with very poorly. Johnny would ask them. "Do you want a haircut?" To which everyone of the plus 10 people would obviously say "Yes." He would then tell them some long winded, non definitive variation of "Well we can't give you one, but try next week, maybe we can fit you in then." What does he think people are coming into the shop to do? Chat? It was rude as hell and just wasting peoples time with a drawn out and basically passive aggressive response. He could have just said "sorry, we are booked up for today" but he obviously felt the need to be on a power trip. Two people got noticeably pissed at the way he told them this on their way out the door. He then proceeded to whisper both times to the other guy working, shit talking and laughing after those people had walked out. Real professional customer service Johnny... #3 When I am waiting almost two hours to get a haircut you don't have to inundate me with Modest Mouse on shuffle. Modest Mouse is great but listening to Modest Mouse, non stop over and over again was absurd. I felt like I was in A Clockwork Orange nightmare. On a positive note this place has really cool decorations despite the atrocious customer service. I will note that Pete/the owner was evidently in Mexico... so maybe that played into it being such a negative experience. I have gone to Pete's Barber Shop twice and have gotten a bad ass haircut each time. The first time I went Jake (a.k.a. the Boy) cut my hair and the second time I got Pete. Whoever you get, you are guaranteed a great cut. Environment is great. Plenty of room to kick back and relax before getting a haircut, and always some great music playing. The only downside is the wait time for a haircut. I went on a Saturday both times. The first time I got in at 9:05AM and didn't get taken until 1:40PM. The second time I went in I got there a little earlier (same amount of customers in the shop as the first time)and was ready for a long wait (had downloaded a couple movies from Netflix and was thinking I would have enough time to walk down to Al's Beef for a "hot and dry" beef. Pete was there the second time I went in and surprisingly, I was taken at 10:20 and out by before 11 with a fresh cut. My first time getting a haircut by someone else in 10 years, after having shaved my head and managed my beard for years on my own, I elected to go to these guys after my one bearded friend strongly recommended them. To say I've been managing my beard is an exaggeration, I've been vacillating between letting it grow to wild man lengths and then making so many mistakes trying to trim it that I would frustratedly shear it off and start over. As I was nearing the Appalachian scraggle again, but enjoying the length, I went for a professional consultation. Johnny took care of me, taming the hairy beast on my face without breaking its back. He turned the bucking bronco of my beard into a stately stallion, without leaving any notions of a petting zoo pony. This is the first five start rating that I truly believe in. It was like a brand new experience and I have to say going to a barbershop will never be the same. First off if you drive by you'd never know they were open. They like keeping the blinds closed so be prepared for that. Two, the wait is as long as it says in the reviews. I got there around 5:30 and didn't get out until after closing. Three the ambiance is pretty laid back. They joke around and have a bunch of retro 70's zombie stuff on the walls. Plus free coffee and beer in the back. Compliments are not a given here as these guys are real dudes. They made fun of my puffy stand up straight asian hair. I always thought its how it grew, then they started grilling me on hair care products and how often I use them. I use the cheapest old spice 2 in 1 shampoo and use it once maybe twice a day depending on if I go to the gym or not. They immediately started ripping on me and told me never shampoo more than once or twice a week. Conditioner is key. Buy salon grade conditioner and use it once a day. Never shampoo your beard only condition it. Shampooing it dries the hair out, conditioning it will allow the natural oils to stay in and keep the hair smoother and healthier. Hmm... fair enough. The guy cutting my hair then started making fun of my alfafa sprouts on the back of my head. Do you want to know why that happens? Then he moved my part on my head from the left to the right. The back of your head dictates when your split should go and I was doing it wrong the whole time! He moved it and then the back of my hair laid flat! Couldn't believe it. He ended up styling my hair, conditioned it to show me what a good grade conditioner felt like and then put some really good quality pomade in that made it shiny on the onset and then as it dried it left a matte finish. Love these dudes. Couldn't stop smiling even if they are just two bro's spending all day broing out and being bros about hair brocare. Come here if you need some schooling on haircair for men. This isn't your typical run of the mill barbershop. Oh and for $28 bucks plus tip it was well worth the wait. CONDITIONER EVERY DAY! SHAMPOO ONCE A WEEK! read more

I'm not one for boozing at my barber, but if that's your thing, they've got you covered. My only recommendation: call ahead to check on the wait.
