I left a one star review for my apprentice cut which was probably too harsh considering he's an apprentice-- I did buy a hat though lol Having said that, the owner reached out to me to try and make amends-- not sure how soon I'll get up there to maybe have him fix the unevenness of the cut, but what matters to me is that he reached out. That's a small business owner who cares about his customers and the reputation of the business, and I appreciate that in today's world where few people give a shit! read more

First visit to Pete's was almost 3 years ago. Needed a good cut for my upcoming wedding, and was so happy have been coming back ever since! Pete and Johnny really know their s$&*t Not only are their cuts amazing, but they really teach you about how to care for your hair. Spoiler alert, almost all of us that don't come to Pete's have been doing it wrong our entire lives, so get here to find the secret! Great patio out back where you can have a beer while you wait, can't beat that at all the chains out there. I used to work in the area, but no longer do, but still make the 45 minute ride out to Pete's to get my haircuts!! Such great people, atmosphere, and styling. LOVE this place! read more

He's the guy I went to after growing my hair way too long during the pandemic. He changed my look for the better. He's a terrific consultant on hair products. Skilled, experienced and smart -- everything you'd want in a style consultant and barber. Highly recommended! read more

What can I say about Petes! After my barber left the city to set up shop in Batavia (if ever that far west check out Beardsgaard Barbers) she recommended Petes to me. That had to be about 6? years ago at this point, and I don't plan on that changing anytime soon. I've never left disappointed and usually leave with a funny story or a couple new songs added to a playlist. I've had my hair and beard perfectly maintained by all 3 guys throughout the years and feel they always get exactly what I want. They even tell me I need to trim the beard up if they think it looks ridiculous (my wife appreciates this.) I wear a hat most days and usually go in to get cleaned up for special occasions, but they give you haircuts that last and grow out nicely. I always enjoyed sitting in the shop and listening to the banter for hours, but the appointments is a game changer, especially because I come from up north to get there, also the wife doesn't know about this feature yet which gives me a chance to hit the local bar while she thinks I'm still waiting to get cut. In conclusion, you want a cut go here. The straight razor on the neck is the perfect finish to a perfect cut. read more

I've gone to Pete's for about 4 years now. It's become so ingrained that I don't even contemplate haircuts elsewhere. Pete, Johnny, and Jake are all excellent professionals that will give you a perfect haircut in about 30 mins. While the haircut itself is quick, the line can be long because of how great the place is. The shop is a comfortable environment to wait and work in, so if you have an off day it's a perfect place to come and get some work done while you wait for your haircut. Even if you don't have work, the barbershop itself is such a cool, fun environment that it is just an enjoyable place to be. Pete provides wifi, coffee, comics, beer, books, and enough wall decor that it's hard to get bored. All of the barbers have wonderful, eclectic taste in music and all are up for conversation. They also have appointment days now, if you prefer. Finally, Pete stocks quality hair products. The first time I got my hair cut by Pete, he gave me a thorough talking to about how the terrible products I was using were making my hair awful. Since I've started using what Pete stocks, my hair has never felt or looked better and all of my previous issues with dandruff went away completely. They know hair and they know how to give customers a top-notch experience from start to finish. read more

If you're looking for your regular old boring barber shop, you're going to want to look else where.... Pete and the rest of the gang specialize in making ugly people, like me, look presentable in public. This group knows who they are and they're not afraid to show it. Tough love, funny banter, and great hair cuts are their forte. Highly recommend you come in and give them a shot, you'll never need to look for another barber again! read more

I've been coming to Pete's for 5 years now, and if that isn't a ringing endorsement, I don't know what is. Each of the three barbers here have figured out how to deal with my unruly locks and I can trust each of them to give me a good haircut. They are very forward and honest with advice on what styles actually suit your hair/head, which is not something I had experience prior to coming to Pete's. That means, that if you have curly hair like mine, and come in asking for the JTT cut, they're going to try their hardest to convince you that it's not the right cut for you (and guess what, they're right!). They are also experts on hair care and are happy to give you advice on how you can give yourself the healthiest head of hair possible. The shop has a real old-school vibe, where customers are comfortable chatting with the barbers and each other. There's beer, video games, comic books, great music, and genuine people. I wouldn't recommend anywhere else for a traditional cut. read more

My beard was getting a bit too shaggy recently, and Pete's is just down the street from me, so I stopped by one Monday afternoon for a beard trim. Pete did a great job, and $10 was quite reasonable for the work. Be advised that its just a two-man shop, and Pete has a decent following, so you may wait. That Monday was particularly busy, so I was hanging out for two hours. On the flip side, the music is good and there is beer, so I was able to chill and catch up on my reading. But if you don't always have that kind of time, Pete's might not be your best option. read more

Stopd in after my normal barbershop was closed for the day. I had driven by these place and decided to give them a try. Good barbers they did a good job. Every time I walk into Pete's Barber Shop, Pete, Johnny and The Boy treat me like family. They love their craft and their customers--you couldn't ask for more out of you local shop. When you come in, expect to be treated like you're in the inner circle and expect to walk out feeling great about your cut. Ever since Pete's was a one-man shop, he made sure his clients were treated right. He made sure that as his business grew, his partners that he brought on knew that people came first. I honestly love this place and the people--and recommend it to literally everyone. read more

Is Pete from Pete's Barber Shop a magician? No. Is Pete an aviator? Nope. Is Pete a one man pony show? I don't think so, but maybe. Is Pete a singer? Hell No. The one thing that Pete is, is a great barber and a nice guy. So that would be two things. But both are true. As you know, I hate being touched. Either by angels or a noodly appendage. That's why I wear armor made from plaid and flannel. But I digress, I hate being touched. But Pete has gained my assurance that not all people are bad. Pete was able to transform me from looking like a homeless man (I have a house with keys too); too a young Castro with piss and vinegar. You know, a 70's Castro. The kind of Castro you can take home to mother. And she would be like "I like your look but I still feel that you political policies just don't jive with me." and Castro would say "it's cool, where the pork?". Yeah, that's right. Pete could make Castro loveable with a haircut and a beard trim. He is Pete from Pete's Barber Shop and he has come to liberate your beard. read more

I have lived here in this area for about three years and finally decided to try Pete's Barber Shop for a haircut and I am glad I did. I ended up indeed getting I guess what you would call a "high and tight" with a little bit of the "conservative" direction of fading from very short on the sides up to the longer 1- 2 inches on the top. I was surprised and delighted that they didn't play rap/hip-hop but actually a fine mix including classic rock, which I think works for everyone (also the music wasn't too loud as it can be in some salons). read more

Amazing. Will not go anywhere else in Chicago anymore. Can be a bit of a wait, but worth it. Slightly more expensive than others in the area, but beyond worth it. The atmosphere, conversations, laughs, sarcastic remarks, and the hair cut/beard treatment are unmatched. read more

Have to admit this was the best barbershop experience I've ever had. First, I received a wonderful haircut and beard trim. Next, the atmosphere was quite inviting and filled with character. Last, and certainly the best, the barber created a fun and, in a snarky manner, comedic environment that allowed me to feel very comfortable. I will be making this my haircut spot. Late on a Friday afternoon in dire need of a cut, I came across Pete's Barber Shop on yelp. I stopped in even though it was past 7pm, and I could tell they were trying to close shop. Pete took me anyway and proceeded to give me a great cut and beard clean up. Went on to have a fantastic evening! Came back to Pete's last Friday (earlier this time, recommended) and received the same sharp looking cut and beard trim. The shop has a great ambiance and vibe, you can even enjoy a beer while you wait. Looking forward to obtaining "regular" status. read more

Pete's Barber Shop - Artist doing his thing - Barbers Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

I've sat on this one for a few days... I haven't had this negative of an experience in a long time and to add icing to the cake... now have to live with the worst haircut of my life. I trusted the perfect score this place had on yelp and cannot believe the level at which I was let down. #1 I asked for a very specific medium length haircut. I showed Johnny over four pictures of it. Evidently though... Johnny couldn't care less... because what I ended up getting was the shortest haircut I've had since I was in preschool. He basically took a sheep shear to the sides and back of my head. It basically looks like I have a buzz. I was further disappointed when the dude had the gusto to crack a joke that "people like me" come in and ask for only two kinds of haircuts... and that they should put a poster on the wall and just have people like me point to which one of those two styles they want... I haven't felt this slanted in a long time. So basically you are insinuating I have no style and don't deserve my individuality? This basically let me know before I'd even seen my hair after I put my glasses back on that it was going to be totally butchered. It was frankly ridiculous. WARNING! Evidently if you don't come off as a hardcore hipster, and pull the look off with a giant beard, you aren't esteemed enough to get a haircut here... #2 I should have known something was up before I sat down in the chair to get my head chopped up. Potential customers kept coming into the shop as I was waiting and were dealt with very poorly. Johnny would ask them. "Do you want a haircut?" To which everyone of the plus 10 people would obviously say "Yes." He would then tell them some long winded, non definitive variation of "Well we can't give you one, but try next week, maybe we can fit you in then." What does he think people are coming into the shop to do? Chat? It was rude as hell and just wasting peoples time with a drawn out and basically passive aggressive response. He could have just said "sorry, we are booked up for today" but he obviously felt the need to be on a power trip. Two people got noticeably pissed at the way he told them this on their way out the door. He then proceeded to whisper both times to the other guy working, shit talking and laughing after those people had walked out. Real professional customer service Johnny... #3 When I am waiting almost two hours to get a haircut you don't have to inundate me with Modest Mouse on shuffle. Modest Mouse is great but listening to Modest Mouse, non stop over and over again was absurd. I felt like I was in A Clockwork Orange nightmare. On a positive note this place has really cool decorations despite the atrocious customer service. I will note that Pete/the owner was evidently in Mexico... so maybe that played into it being such a negative experience. I can't imagine he would allow Johnny to treat his customers like what I witnessed last weekend. read more

I have gone to Pete's Barber Shop twice and have gotten a bad ass haircut each time. The first time I went Jake (a.k.a. the Boy) cut my hair and the second time I got Pete. Whoever you get, you are guaranteed a great cut. Environment is great. Plenty of room to kick back and relax before getting a haircut, and always some great music playing. The only downside is the wait time for a haircut. I went on a Saturday both times. The first time I got in at 9:05AM and didn't get taken until 1:40PM. The second time I went in I got there a little earlier (same amount of customers in the shop as the first time)and was ready for a long wait (had downloaded a couple movies from Netflix and was thinking I would have enough time to walk down to Al's Beef for a "hot and dry" beef. Pete was there the second time I went in and surprisingly, I was taken at 10:20 and out by before 11 with a fresh cut. Ill put up with the wait time gladly, since I know that I am going to get a great cut each time!!! read more

Pete and the guys are really the best around. I started going to the shop about a year ago after being disappointed in my barber. I read around and figured I'd give them a shot. I'm so happy. I have been going to Pete's for years. He has cultivated an amazing environment around his shop. His barber crew not only bring talent and skill to the shop but also fun personality and respect making this barber shop my go to. Pete's is not only a staple in Avondale, but the whole city. The guys at Pete's make you feel like you've known them for years while still providing the seasoned professional service in a shop that itself has so much character. The clientele has always been as diverse as his musical and art tastes displayed in the shop. The barbers at Pete's won't try to rush you out the door so they can squeeze in their next customer and always appreciate new faces. Since COVID Pete hasn't missed a step however, actually taking the time to move next door to a new bigger space to fully realize the quirky classic vision for his shop. Pete's is phenomenal. Three great dudes doing a barbershop the RIGHT way- both pre and post lockdown. Pete, Johnny, and the Boy always give you HONEST advice. You want this haircut- well here's why it does or doesn't work for you. The shop atmosphere has always been a place where you can have a deep conversation whether it's about hair, music, pop culture, or society- and have a great time. Oh yeah, and there's free beer. These guys adjusted their operations gracefully in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic, and are handling well the trials and tribulations of opening safely with a careful attention to the wellbeing of barbers and customers alike- all the while staying loyal to long-standing patrons. I would have written a glowing review much earlier but I wanted these guys' business all to myself! read more

Remember the part in Army of Darkness when Ash gets thrown into the pit and there's an evil Deadite ready to swallow his soul and eat his flesh? And then the demon punches him a beats his a$$ for a few minutes? But then someone in the crowd says "Strange one!" and throws him his chainsaw and he jumps in the air and it lands on his stump and he lands and is all like "Come get some"? And then he slices up the Deadite with his chainsaw and a guy laughs but a severed hand slaps him in the face but then the spikey walls start to close and he has to fight his way up a chain while fighting off another demon and he makes it just in time? And then he shocks the Medieval folks by firing his shotgun and says "This is my boomstick" and they are all in awe? That was awesome. That's kinda what its like getting a haircut from Pete. This is the first five start rating that I truly believe in. It was like a brand new experience and I have to say going to a barbershop will never be the same. First off if you drive by you'd never know they were open. They like keeping the blinds closed so be prepared for that. Two, the wait is as long as it says in the reviews. I got there around 5:30 and didn't get out until after closing. Three the ambiance is pretty laid back. They joke around and have a bunch of retro 70's zombie stuff on the walls. Plus free coffee and beer in the back. Compliments are not a given here as these guys are real dudes. They made fun of my puffy stand up straight asian hair. I always thought its how it grew, then they started grilling me on hair care products and how often I use them. I use the cheapest old spice 2 in 1 shampoo and use it once maybe twice a day depending on if I go to the gym or not. They immediately started ripping on me and told me never shampoo more than once or twice a week. Conditioner is key. Buy salon grade conditioner and use it once a day. Never shampoo your beard only condition it. Shampooing it dries the hair out, conditioning it will allow the natural oils to stay in and keep the hair smoother and healthier. Hmm... fair enough. The guy cutting my hair then started making fun of my alfafa sprouts on the back of my head. Do you want to know why that happens? Then he moved my part on my head from the left to the right. The back of your head dictates when your split should go and I was doing it wrong the whole time! He moved it and then the back of my hair laid flat! Couldn't believe it. He ended up styling my hair, conditioned it to show me what a good grade conditioner felt like and then put some really good quality pomade in that made it shiny on the onset and then as it dried it left a matte finish. Love these dudes. Couldn't stop smiling even if they are just two bro's spending all day broing out and being bros about hair brocare. Come here if you need some schooling on haircair for men. This isn't your typical run of the mill barbershop. Oh and for $28 bucks plus tip it was well worth the wait. CONDITIONER EVERY DAY! SHAMPOO ONCE A WEEK! read more

Since I'm about to move, I don't feel bad writing a yelp review about Pete. Otherwise, I'd keep him to myself as a secret. a dark secret. like the kind you stuff deep inside your soul and keep down with endless sleepless nights and bottles of Old Crow. ...anyway.... i used to go to Pete at Joe's. When Pete left Joe's, I left Joe's. I didn't know he had his own gig going on (although I did run into him here and there around town and chat with him). I finally got my ass over to Pete's and it was great to see him again before I'm out of here. The small shop has a good old school feel, and although it is in a somewhat weird location (but anything on elston is in a weird location), Pete's Barber Shop is the place to go for a good men's haircut. Pete is a great to talk to, easy-going guy which is a great asset for a barber. Tired of looking like a douche? go to Pete's. Sick of the line at Belmont Barber? go to Pete's. New to the neighborhood and need to get fixed up? go to Pete's. Want to know what he thinks about any movie, ever made? go to Pete's. read more

The first time I went here, Pete and I ran through every zombie movie we could think of, and I knew I would be coming back. Awesome dude who give awesome haircuts. I'm not one for boozing at my barber, but if that's your thing, they've got you covered. My only recommendation: call ahead to check on the wait. With only two chairs and a loyal clientele, you can easily wait over 2 hours for a haircut if there's 3-4 people ahead of you. (Of course, that's just more time to play Xbox/watch movies/browse porn in the back waiting room.) read more

I tagged along with my SO his first time here. He's not a yelper, so I just wanted to write in that these guys are great at what they do. You're also not paying an arm and a leg for an okay cut that only lasted ten minutes. His new hair is kick ass and clean! read more

I'm usually a tough critic and dislike giving out 5 stars out of some misguided sense of self-worth as a freaking Yelp reviewer, but i'm going to make an exception for Pete's. best barber shop I've been to, for a number of reasons. 1) mini fridge full of miller high life for the thirsty patron who just needs that single beer to get him going at 9 AM 2) ACDC's Powerage playing on his laptop 2) the most ridiculous assortment of reading material. sweet, people magazine, I can catch up on the latest celeb gossip. cool, biker babes mag, can look at hot rods and bikinis. wait, what is this one peeking out from under the covers? "Girls and Corpses"?? yes, my friends, there is a magazine called Girls and Corpses, and its utter simplicity should be a shining beacon for its peers in the print media. Page 1, dead hillbilly with a pitchfork through the face. Page 2, scantily clad, blood soaked hottie in the early stages of being zombified. Page 3, the coup d'état, skeletal Hitler getting a lap dance from a pornstar. I shit you not, this magazine does exist and it will change your life. 3) prices are very reasonable. $15 for a regular cut. cash only. 4) pete has no issues joking about race, body odor, choice of clothing, etc, so it's quite refreshing to hear such honesty, brutal as it may be at times, in this day and age. hey, if you stink like a rotting hog carcass accidentally left behind at the rendering plant, then by god, you deserve to be called out by no less than your barber. by the way, pete listens and does what you tell him to do, can't say the same for every other barber out there. no complaints about the actual hair cut, read more

Awesome shop, awesome barbers, and FREE BEER (pop for the minors)!! At first I didn't know if free beer was a good thing or not, as it might have impaired my ability to judge a good cut (a smart and evil ploy by Pete). But after sitting there and watching these two guys do some of the best cuts I've seen in a while; I was put at ease and slammed a brew. Pete is the lead barber and a few people were waiting in line for him, so I went with Mike. But let me tell you, barber Mike is no slouch. On my first visit not only did he hook me up with a smokin haircut, but he corrected my hairstyle, gave me some tips and advice, let me sample a product he recommended, and gave me the low down on everything pomade. Definitely be back to visit barber Mike for a proper cut, and to get some more of that Cock Grease.......pomade. hahaha. read more

They treat you like a pal and even give a couple of jabby insults to make you feel at home. Mike is great but I have only been in Pete's chair and he knows it right. He has given me tips that I have needed for 20+ years! I have seen them flat out tell a guy that his hair is not right for his age. Good on them! They also have the best selection of grooming supplies for men. From Suavecito to Cock Grease to Beard Oils (you have to trust beard advice from a man with a 12" beard) Grow up and stop going to the lady-hair places!
