Since I am moving to Chicago, I wanted to check out the barbershop available around or close to Uptown. I was recommended by my boyfriend to check this place out since it had pretty good ratings. The barbershop was easy to find and the crew there were all really nice and welcoming. I went ahead and scheduled an appointment with Jasper. He assessed the state of my hair at the time and consulted with me on what I wanted. I will say going to a new barber is always scary and it can either be a hit or miss. Jasper did not disappoint and delivered on a great haircut. I must say this has been one of the best haircuts I've gotten in a while. The haircut was super clean and precise. You know how they say when one door closes, another one opens ? Well some time, about 2 months ago, a barber that I had been going to for about 5 years, left to a different place without notice. When that happened, I did some research and stumbled upon Fernwood. From their website and social media, I could tell this place was about it. They resonated simplicity, but precision to me. I made an appointment with Jasper, as one of my friends recommended him. Upon meeting him, I knew he was personable and charismatic. The entire time, he engages with conversation, while still being detail-oriented with his cut. It's like I'm hanging out with one of my friends while getting my hair cut. The service is an hour long, and it shows too. I leave the place feeling 10x better than when I walked in. Although I've booked all my appointments with him, all the other guys are phenomenal as well. As I'm getting my haircut, I'm watching the other barbers work and I'm amazed at these guys' talents. The tapering/fades are so gradual and clean, while the scissor work is so slick. I look forward to all my appointments and highly highly recommend this place! read more

Love this shop and love the barbers. Professional, cool, great to talk to. However, the prices have gone up too high in my opinion. Prices increased to $45 during the pandemic, now another increase slated in the next month. $60 to get a cut from the OG barbers with the new price model. I'm visiting Chicago from California and needed a cut and I'm glad to have found this shop. The atmosphere was friendly and chill and you can tell the staff all really get along. I specifically want to leave a review for an apprentice named Marc who gave me a haircut yesterday. We had no issue communicating what I wanted for my haircut and he also made some suggestions that I gladly accepted, the final product looked great! After the cut he had one of the more experienced barbers check it to see if it fit the standards and from that you can really tell they care about their customers and the haircuts they do here. All around I had a 10/10 experience and I'll say that whether you get a more seasoned barber or even one of the apprentices, you'll be in great hands. Everyone who came in the shop left with clean, stylish and modern cuts. The other apprentice next to me did his thing on too. I really love this place. Patrick gives the best haircuts I've had in all my years. I have weird cowlicks and super thick hair, and he is like an architect every time I sit in his chair, surveying the field, plotting out his game plan. It's the first time I've had haircuts so good that I can hop out of the shower, dry my hair, and I'm ready to go without tamping it down with lots of hair product. And the cuts have grown out perfectly. I've had my hair cut by others there, all good. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the barbers. Super diverse crew, attracting a super diverse clientele (particularly remarkable given the North Center neighborhood where it's situated). You'll be in good hands, no matter what your hair is like. Prepare for a wait, even if you have an appointment. Sometimes it's just a few minutes, but more often they've been running closer to 20-30 minutes behind. Their services are so good, though, that it's worth the wait. Just bring a book, like I do, and settle in. read more

I discovered this place by serendipity... I was scrolling through my Explore feed on Instagram when I found this dope looking hoodie. I'm a sucker for hoodies so I clicked through and it seemed like it was a collab between a local Chicago clothing brand Hidden Characters and.... a.... barber shop? What? Needless to say, I thought the design of the hoodie was dope so I clicked through the barber shop. It sent me down a slippery slope of pure curiosity and interest. The aesthetics of the shop itself intrigued me and I realized I had a fair amount of mutuals that have gone there, know the barbers there, or, in the case of my old friend Daniel from my undergrad days, worked there! I had several degrees of connection to this barbershop despite having never heard of it before, so I made a promise to myself to get my next haircut there. I'm usually not very fussy about my haircut. As a military man, as long as it's within regs, I'm cool with it. I've been going to Sport Clips lately, and before that Super Cuts, and before that.... Betty and Nick's. So you can see that my standards for haircuts aren't... super high. For years I always prioritized speed and price over quality. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. Overall, my experience with hair has just been meh. Every few months or so I'd try out a new random barbershop that had a coupon or was recommended to me, but other than that, I never really had a "spot." I think that might have changed after today. I think Fernwood might be my "spot." I originally intended to walk in on Saturday, but I was feeling lazy and didn't have a lot of time, and I just had a feeling that I'd be waiting for a long time even if I went at opening. I wanted to walk in because the walk in price for cuts is $30 as opposed to $40 for an appointment (and we've already established that I'm a cheapskate) but I ended up just making an appointment for today, Wednesday, because I was just that curious about the place. I got to Fernwood a few minutes after my appointment time at 5:30PM, so I was a little late, but my assigned barber wasn't done with his previous cut yet so it worked out. I was greeted by the aforementioned Daniel, whom I knew from my undergraduate days and we caught up and chatted. Of course I had to bring up how I found out about Fernwood and I brought up the hoodie, and just my luck, the owner said he could sell me a hoodie today. Great! So I was already out $60 because of this darn hoodie I fell in love with on Instagram. So much for being cheap. Daniel informed me about the fridge with free beer and water that I heard so much about from Yelp reviews. I did not indulge today, but I really appreciated that feature. 5 minutes in this shop and the vibes were already on point. After about 10 minutes I got into Mikey's barber chair and began my cut. I will say that for probably 99% of all the haircuts I've gotten, I've always wanted to just get in and get out with no motivation to talk to the barber. Getting cut by Mikey was different, and I get the feeling that any of the barbers at Fernwood would have provided the same vibes and atmosphere. He was super chill and easy to talk to, yet didn't force conversation which was great for my introverted self. I chatted to him about how I found the shop, about my background and where I was from. I asked him the same and about how the shop was founded and the meaning behind it. From his words and also from just being in the shop itself, there's a very strong emphasis on community which I love. I'm all about community. As I've mentioned, I'm in the army so I need my haircuts high and tight. I had absolutely no view of the mirror during the entirety of my cut so I had no idea what the progress looked like, but I can say that Mikey did wonders. I was taken aback when I finally looked in the mirror... is this what having a haircut from a non-franchised shop looked like? That's crazy. He did a perfect 0-1 fade on my sides and styled/cut the top of my head just right to the way I like it. I haven't been able to style it yet but I have a feeling it'll look great, because it looks great unstyled. My hair ALWAYS looks like crap unstyled, but most of the time I'm too lazy to style it or I just wear a hat. The fact that I would wear my unstyled Fernwood cut out without a hat and love how it would look... it just goes to show how clean the cut was. I'm running out of characters here but long story short, I can't say enough good things about my experience at Fernwood. It is a little pricey but it's a price I'll willingly pay every so often to get a quality cut and great vibes from the entire team. Definitely check it out if you're ever in the LID area, but be warned that these barbers TAKE THEIR TIME; you will likely be there for a while. My cut from Mikey took about an hour or a little more. It's more than I'm used to but again, I'm willing to invest that time every so often for the quality. Definitely a fan of Fernwood. I will be back! read more

I've gone a handful of times and have had a different guy cut my hair each time and I've been totally satisfied. They are always busy, and there may be a little wait but--to me--a place in demand is a place you want to be; relax. I'll sit down and we we'll talk about what I want and I express my concerns about being a middle-aged guy with thinning, fine hair and they've all assured me not to worry and they will tell me when it's time to just start shaving it. Ha! I appreciate the honesty and consistency of their responses. The group of friends that own and work in this shop are very thoughtful about the community they are a part of, and how they are building their business within it. Want proof? Fernwood barbershop is my go to barbershop for fresh cuts and fades. I travel all the way from the south suburbs fo get fresh fades here. My homeboy dang is my barber and he has delivering cuts for me for over a decade since I received my first cut from him. He is highly crafted,attentive listener, personable, and patient. He has been able to mimic all the haircuts that I have shown him and I feel fresh to death when I leave out of his chair. Great atmosphere and friendly family environment. My son has been to Fernwood twice. First time, barber Manny cut his hair. Second time , barber Mikey cut his hair. Both barbers did a really nice job. My son's hair has multiple textures going on and I've had trouble finding a barbershop that offers consistent quality. Both barbers faded the sides and back very evenly and clean. My son is 5 years old and chose his own style - he was super happy with his fresh cut . Also, the shop had a chill vibe and mid-mod meets eco contemporary style. Good tunes as well.
