Of all the reviews I read about Ratskeller, none mention the underground local part of the restaurant which is where we dined. An elderly gentleman we met at a beer hall earlier that day communicated to us that there would be dancing at Ratskeller. We found the restaurant and realized it was rather touristy and there was no music. However, the ambience on the touristy part was actually pretty cool. Still, there was no music. So we inquired with a hostess and she led us down a long hallway then told us to go to the bottom of the stairs. And low and behold underneath the touristy restaurant is a lively 2nd restaurant for locals. It seemed like a lot of families and older Germans who were dancing to the live band. While really busy, it was worth the wait just to be part of a local experience....translate (no English menu here where there was one upstairs). The flatbread was unique with ham and cream cheese (something I would make for a snack at home) but it was a bit overpriced at 15 euro. However, the German Riesling was excellent and our waiter comped a couple of drinks to make up for the wait. Definitely try to find this place if you are visiting Munich. read more

Without a doubt, a must visit while in Munich. Location, location, location! What a cool place to have a drink or get a bite to eat. The name says it all (think Rat Cellar). Once you arrive in the city center, Ratskeller is located in the bottom of the New Town Hall. Walk down some stairs to what seems to be a dungeon. Once inside, you can enjoy free Internet access while sampling one of the 50 beers they have. The food, is good and the prices are reasonable. The atmosphere is wonderful, considering the candle sticks and stone walls. I kept thinking that the environment must have been similar back in medieval times. I love this place. I have had so many people mention this place to me but two years on, I had yet to try it. So tourists in tow we went here for lunch. The picture menus in English on the door was a slight turn off but we decided to go in and check it out anyway. It's a beautiful restaurant / wine bar in the basement of the city hall. It's huge and has numerous sections. The main restaurant is beautifully decorated and ornate with stained glass windows and other sections. I was slightly torn in rating this place. Ambience - 4 stars Food - 3 stars Service - 5 stars Price - 2 stars Originality - 2 stars I am giving it three stars on the basis of the service we had here which was top class, friendly and welcoming. They not only looked after us well but also were very good to our dog. The menu here is extensive and caters for tourists with picture menus and so on. It's obviously a huge hangout for tourists in town. The pork knuckle was ok nothing spectacular and lacked a punch. The Kaiserschmarrn was also ok and a bit dry. I am glad I came here and will probably end up here again with visitors. As for food, I would much prefer the amazing braühauses on the Tal or many other excellent Bavarian restaurants in our area. This is expensive Biergarten food served in a very nice old restaurant. It's not cheap and the value for money is low. The Ratskeller has been serving on Marienplatz as long as the Neues Rathaus has been there, so they know what they are doing. It's apparent that many locals dine here and are known to the waiters, but the staff are very accommodating to visitors. The multilingual menu includes an English version. Wanting to get started sampling German Wurst, I ordered the Jumbo Knackbrautwurst Platter. This includes a long (cut in half) Knackwurst and Kartoffelsalat (German potato salad). It was so good! The waiter also brought a basket of warm Bavarian Pretzels for the table. (Extra charge for each piece taken.) Higly recommended! read more

This restaurant was in the list of recommended places at our hotel. The first thing that caught my eye was the picture of the amazing painted ceilings. After reading good reviews, ww have decided to make a reservation here for out Christmas dinner. After entering this restaurant in the basement, I was amazed of how big this place is!!! There were so many different halls, rooms and private corners, each has its own style. Not only the decoration and atmosphere was a treat for the eye, the food sure was too! We ordered grilled pork knuckle and sausage tasting platter. The sizes of the portions were crazy, but luckily they were able to give us doggybag for out food. I would cry if I have to throw away those delish leftovers. I can imagine that many find this place to be a bit touristy. There were probably more foreign people than German people. Another downside of this place is that you have to be lucky to get a table at the pretty parts of the restaurant. In my opinion, some corners have less 'cozy' and 'fancy' atmosphere than the others. Tried this place after a recommendation from our hotel concierge. It is a place for tourists but we did see some locals there and the food was pretty good. We had potato cakes and pretzels to start. The cakes were good but I wasn't fond of the pretzels. They were hard and we felt like they had been sitting out all day. I had the veal wurst in a brown gravy with German potato salad. The potatoe salad was AWESOME! The wurst was good. Better than I have had in the USA. My friend had the pork knuckle with the potatoes au gratin. It was a lot of food but she enjoyed it. Definitely the most touristy place I ate at in Munich. But very interesting how it is under the church in what appears to have been the old wine cellar. The schnitzel was sooo tender although not as massive as some of the photos led me to believe it would be. Two people in our group got the pork knuckle and it was to die for! The rest of the restaurant is in the basement of the building and also very beautiful but the court yard sets a special ambiance. This is a very touristy place and I think they're understaff. If you get there early- before 5pm the service is ok, but once it gets packed- you're screwed. The wait staff are stretched pretty think and they are running around going crazy to Service the guests. Anyway, menu is very simple and they have good food, just takes a while to place your order and to get it. I had a spicy sausage with potato pancake and sauerkraut. Ate here yesterday with friends. The food was okay...Not terrible but not great. I pointed to the things on the menu that I wanted so that the waiter would understand. When we saw the check, I couldn't believe it. I was charged for the more expensive water (same size, different brand) that I did not point to. I pointed to the entree that I wanted which had 2 prices next to it and I made it clear which one I wanted (got the small but was charged for the regular size). We didn't want to get into it with our waiter who already had a crappy attitude. When we each paid he came back saying "Tip not included!". We left not giving a tip. When you deliberately overcharge and mislead customers, why would we leave you anything? Only reason this is 2 stars and not 1 is because it has nice ambiance and I didn't get food poisoning (very high expectations here...). Oh yeah even if you are dining here you need to pay to use their toilet!!! I have never seen that at any restaurant in Europe where you are dining there!! You have been warned! read more

The sausages with saffron were just lacking in flavor and my wife wasn't to impressed either compared to the millions of other places. I first came to the Ratskeller in 1988 when I was on a high school trip visiting Munich for the first time. I remember our German teachers telling us that it would be a special dinner, but don't remember much else. When I was back in Munich this past December and (of course) checking out the Christkindlmarkt at Marienplatz, I told my traveling companion about it and we decided to go for lunch. I think it may have been her favorite dining place in Munich! Both my friend and I are fans of Bavarian food. Bring on the wursts, the sauerkraut, the potatoes, and the beer! The Ratskeller does Bavarian food right, and in a fantastic environment. While service can be a bit slow compared to American standards, it was both friendly and welcoming. We opted for the kasespatzle and the sauerbraten. Both were delicious! My mouth is watering now remembering the kasespatzle (sort of like mac and cheese, but way better). We also got a couple of dunkel beers to go with. I'm a huge fan of dark German beer, so really couldn't go wrong here. But, the best part of the meal might have been dessert. I forget what it was called, but it was essentially apple rings fried in beer batter, served with whipped cream and walnut ice cream. YUM! If you're in Munich and want some good Bavarian food, I would certainly recommend the Ratskeller. The fine reputation of this iconic restaurant is certainly well deserved. My wife and I are seasoned travelers and we have dined all over the world. Germany was the second country we visited during our month-long driving tour through Europe. Our lovely lunch at the Ratskeller was indeed one of our most memorable during this trip. It was mid-afternoon, so the lunch crowd rush was well behind us. We were pleasantly greeted and seated in this picturesque and now quiet eatery. Our waiter, Pane, was formally attired and he was most professional and friendly. We needed a few moments to peruse the interesting and extensive menu -- while he brought our beverages and a complementary starter. We ordered a delicious sausage platter to share, along with a delightful appetizer sampler served on a lovely 3-tier tray. Everything was presented in the classic full-service style. We felt quite pampered. Each dish was carefully prepared with fresh, top-quality ingredients and everything tasted just marvelous. We know this cuisine quite well, so we savored each bite. The menu items are classic Bavarian fare... but with an upscale flair. The food was absolutely delicious and the fine service added much to create a very special dining experience. This was our first meal in Munich, which added an extra special glow to our afternoon dining that day. We can certainly recommend the Ratskeller when visiting this historic and picturesque city. Lovely and lively spot located just in Marienplatz a couple spaces down from the glockenspiel. Dinner is moderately priced and the food is great. I had the seasonal sea bass and it was one of the highlights of my meals here in München. We had a group of ten and the only complaint I have was our waiter forgot to bring waters to the table several times. We ate here in August 2017 and It was good, but I wouldn't say that it was amazing especially considering the price was 52€ including tip for two meals: 1) Wienerschnitzel w/ potatoes and 2) roast pork w/ a potato dumpling and a bread dumpling. "If you can only go to one restaurant in Munich, this is the place to go." I saw this review somewhere and therefore I give it a try. It serves traditional German food. I ordered potato soup and Schweinshaxe. The soup comes with Rye bread, and therefore I did not get the normal bread and appetizer as other diners. I assume that's by design. The soup itself tastes good: rich, creamy, perfectly seasoned. Rye bread is not to my expectation but still is above average. The Schweinshaxe, roasted pork knuckle, is done very nicely. I did not stay in Germany for long, but this is the first restaurant that serves pork knuckle that's done correctly: tender, juicy, but not greasy. The skin is still a bit overly fried so it can't be cut easily with a knife, but that's okay. It is much, much better than those I had in beer houses that are hard to cut from skin to bone. Service-wise, staff speaks good English and easy to communicate with. They are overloaded so do not expect prompt service. Give some patience and take it easy. Last note: don't order water. It's a robbery. I paid 4 euros for 300ml water. Not even a bubbly water, just bottle water. Order something else for drink. This is the missing star. read more

The menu is traditional Bavarian with some other options. I went here twice in the same day, for lunch and then dinner. Both were very good. For lunch I had their Omega-3 salad. Very good. Verge best part was the walnut bread. For dinner I had the sausage platter with Kraut. Yum! The plate was huge, so unless you are starving, you may want to skip the appetizer. They put baskets of pretzels on the table without you ordering them, so you will assume that they are like free bread and eat them, and then they will charge you $1.50 euro per pretzel that you eat, without letting you know that this is a thing is a thing that they do. When we asked about it when the bill came, the server said "we always put baskets of pretzels on the table, but only charge you for the ones you eat" well then tell us that when you give them to us! read more

Great location under the new town hall. Watched the noon Glockenspiel and then headed down to the restaurant. They have an elevator (lift) which was great for my elderly father. We started by sharing the appetizer tower which had some bruschetta, mozzarella, grilled veggies, smoked salmon and cured meat. Quite good! My dad insisted on a burger which he said was "okay." I didn't really expect a burger in Munich to knock his socks off, so that entree isn't playing into my review. My son had the sausage sampler with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. He LOVED it. My other son had the pork shank, and while it was messy and very large, he thought it was terrific. It was one of the most flavorful and tender pieces of pork I have ever tried. I had the spaetzle with butter and cheese. Way too much in the bowl. I wish there had been a smaller plate of it. It was very good, but I don't think I made my way through even a third of it. The boys had beers and enjoyed the variety. It is a beautiful restaurant. The ceilings are really impressive and the woodwork is tremendous. Our server was very friendly and helped us order in English and very broken German. Service was very slow. But perhaps we Americans are just too used to being in a hurry.
