A solid 4.5 star experience. The atmosphere is attractive "old world German". You feel like you are sitting inside of history. Located on the Marienplatz, there is plenty to see in that area. The food is nicely traditional, and very well prepared. The service was surprisingly fast, and very friendly. Just the decor alone would have been worth the visit, but all of it was a great experience.
A friend and I had an early dinner here, as a break from the Christmas markets. We were promptly seated, though it took a bit too long for our order to be taken. The bottled water we ordered took too long to arrive and the 'starter' dish of breaded Brie arrived the same time as our shared entree, their version of 'fried chicken.' The starter and entree were average in quality. The ambiance was okay, what you would expect for a restaurant in Germany, off a busy square. I don't think I would return, if ever in Munich again.
Ratskellar is a beautiful restaurant with delicious food. It breaks my heart to see that they closed at the beginning of 2026. I'm glad I had the opportunity to dine in this beautiful 150 year old restaurant. My review comes after its closure but it serves to honor the restaurant in hosting my visit. The Building is amazing where the walls and ceilings act as palettes for beautiful painted art. Stepping into the restaurant feel as if one is stepping through a time portal where one feels they are dining 151 years ago which is how old the building is. The ambiance is quite lively and energetic. Although the highlight is the space, the food is also very good. Their pretzels are served warm and fresh with a firm exterior and an interior that melts as it enters one's mouth. The soup is flavorful and healthy with not even a drop of oil pooling to the top. The schnitzel is as tender as it gets. The servers were knowledgeable and fast but it is always so busy that the restaurant should consider increasing staff as to improve customer service. Perfect location right in the heart of Marienplatz where the Glockenspiel is a stone's throw away. Overall, a wonderful restaurant to dine with great food and a beautifully historic setting!
I mean, I know this place is touristic, but the food was pretty decent. The schweinshaxe was quite good. The käsespätzle was pretty decent as was the obatzda. The salad we had was over dressed but I don't come to Germany for a salad (mom in law ordered it). Waiter was very nice and the price was fair given how much of a touristic area we were in.
We were so excited to get reservations to this iconic restaurant, in the middle of Marienplatz in Munich! Ambiance- 10/10!! This place is BEAUTIFUL!! We went to the reservation desk to check in. The gentleman at the desk seemed annoyed we were there, as he was on his cell phone. Barely spoke, told us we were in the wrong place but proceeded to take us to a dirty table that he cleaned off in front of us, put our menus down and walked away without saying another word. Rough start, but the inside of Ratskeller is so cool! Our waiter was nice. He was very busy and seemed rushed, but he was efficient. Took our drink and food orders together. We told him everything we wanted because we thought we might not see him again. We got all the German staples- breadbasket with Obzada cheese and lard spread - not delicious. Not much of taste at all. The Goulash soup was impressive, but wish it had more meat. We shared the Sauerbraten. It was mediocre. The meat was so tender, but the flavor was bland. It was served with red cabbage (it was mushy ) and the potato dumplings were ok. Not much flavor there either. I will say, they give you the option to turn any of their entrees into 'family style' shareable meals for just a few dollars more, which was nice. Overall meh for food. Wow for decor.
Ratskeller has phenomenal reviews on both Google and TripAdvisor. It's a huge restaurant but packed so it's definitely a good idea to make a reservation ahead of time! I started with the white asparagus cream soup with chives garnish. It was delicious and comforting BUT it was missing the most important ingredient in the soup "chunks of white asparagus" as listed on the menu. (I'm obsessed with white asparagus!) I let the waitress know and she was super nice and asked the kitchen to bring me a side of asparagus to add in. Even then, I was hoping for a thicker, creamier soup, but it was pretty watery. For the main, I had the pork knuckle which reminded me a bit of pernil. It wasn't as tender as I expected and was a little dry. Served with red cabbage (heavy on the cranberry sauce, not a fan!) and potato dumplings. I also ordered the white asparagus salad with avocado and corn. It came grilled and fried, definitely preferred the grilled version! Overall, it's a solid restaurant. A few things could've been better, but I'd still say it's worth checking out.
Lovely service. We picked Ratskeller because of its great location in Marienplatz, right in the center of our walking tour and close to the mass transit station. We ordered cappuccino, a dark beer, a light beer, pizza, and the Jägerschnitzel. The beers were enjoyable, and the cappuccino was a nice touch. The schnitzel was hearty with a flavorful mushroom sauce. The pizza actually surprised us -- much better than expected and very good. The vaulted cellar atmosphere added to the charm, and despite the busy crowd, service was attentive and efficient. Overall, Ratskeller was a convenient and enjoyable stop with good food, cozy ambiance, and a perfect location in the heart of Munich.
Ratskeller is a popular German restaurant located underneath the Glockenspiel in Marienplatz. They have an extremely large seating area. Chicken schnitzel (€13= $14.50 USD) - This consisted of 2 small chicken breast pieces battered and fried. In terms of flavor this was plain, but at least it was crispy. The chicken could have been more tender. Apple studel (€10.50= $11.50 USD) - Served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, this was on the smaller side, but the filling tasted great as it was slightly tart with a bit of sweetness. The crust wasn't too crispy, but still good. Water (.75 L) = (€6.75= $7.50 USD) - This was a total rip off, had I known the price of water here, I would have just filled up a refillable bottle just outside from one of the local water fountains. Overall this place is a tourist trap and prices are on the high side. Yes, you will find all the popular German delicacies here and this restaurant is on many tourists places to visit.
Very cool ambiance. Located in a basement. Very large restaurant but set up makes it feel a lot smaller. Service was relatively quick and friendly. Food was very good. We had two of their soups and they were both excellent. The jagerschnitzel and Munich wollwurst were outstanding. Totally recommend coming here if visiting Munich.
What an amazing outdoor dining experience! We passed through here walking around the city and decided to arrange our dinner plans entirely around returning. We ordered the caesar salad (without anchovies), crisp baked Brie soft cheese, Munich rostbratwurstl, and the wirsthaus bratwurst. The salad was a very large with super creamy dressing! The Brie bites were really tasty, especially with the sauce provided. The Munich rostbratwurstl was also really good, particularly with the sauerkraut and shredded horseradish. Unfortunately, we never received the wirsthaus bratwurst (nor did we pay for it), but perhaps it was good we didn't as the salad was particularly filling on its own.
While in Marienplatz, we stopped in Ratskeller for lunch. We were seated immediately and the service was very friendly. We had some beer and I had a special from their seasonal asparagus menu: fried potato cake with sautéed white and green asparagus, spinach, and tomatoes, topped with a fried egg. The potato cake was so crispy and the veggies were tender but still had bite, and the fried egg yolk broke perfectly over top. It was so tasty! We then had Black Forest cake for dessert, which was really good, with the cherries adding tartness to the sweet cake. A great choice when in the area with ample seating, a very friendly staff, and fun decor!
On the mention of getting a traditional Bavarian meal while attending a Lab Automators event in Munich, one of the attendees mentioned a famous place under the city chambers in the historic Munich Old Town centre of Marienplatz. Gorgeous, spacious and with medivalesque interiors like most bavarian food halls, Ratskeller had the added luxury of very prompt, attentive servers. The Ratskeller potato soup was divine along with the crisp, accompanying pretzel. The scheinhaxe was just delicious, topped off with Bavarian potatoes and the novel touch of red sauerkraut, which was slightly sweeter in complementing the tastes. The finale came with the Bayerischer Apfelstrudel, presented as opulently as it tasted. This lovely venue is highly recommended as part of a visitor's experience in Munich and to get both a historic and tasty culinary experience.
Cool restaurant under St. Peter's. We were able to walk in for a late lunch. If you'd like to come, highly recommend reservations. Food was great and there have smaller portion options if you are not that hungry. They were the perfect size to save room for dessert. I had the Wiener schnitzel with fries and you must end the me with apple strudel.
You walk into the basement of a literal castle...just the coolest experience ever. The ambience is authentic as well. Live music and the polka band was . The food was delicious, homemade, and so much comfort food. We ordered a sausage sampler, goulash, and spatzle, all of which I have no critique for. Just damn good food all around. The service was great. They were slammed so it was a little difficult getting the check, but not too bad still. All in all, I would highly recommend if you are looking for an authentic Bavarian experience and want to know how the Serfs lived back in the day. read more

Dinner time .... This place was huge. The restaurant has 2 levels going down for dinner. The ceiling has brightly painted murals. Table setting was Bavarian era. We were in a big group and seated in a very nice room. The attendants were very polite and on time. Served us beer and wine . The beer was light which I really enjoyed. The bread and pretzel were good. Pretzel tasted so much better with Butter. The green salad with coleslaw was refreshing. Loved the crispiness of the coleslaw. The pork with fresh varieties of mushroom in a creamy sauce was cooked perfectly. Loved the mushrooms a lot. The apple pie with ice cream and whipped cream ended the dinner course perfectly. Eat here every time I am in Munich. Their steak plate is the best. I wasn't so hungry so I tried the fried chicken plate. It looked like a kids meal. Good thing I wasn't hungry. The fries changed from last June as well. Tasted like frozen McDonalds fries instead of what they used to serve. Potatoes pancakes were like McDonalds Hash Browns. McDonalds Inc. must have bought them since the food quality seriously declined. read more

My friend made dinner reservations here for a Thursday night during Oktoberfest. It's a huge restaurant in Marienplatz so it was packed. We were seated quickly (there is a separate line for reservations). The menu is clearly organized in both German and English, and has sections for fish and vegetarian options (very limited vegan dishes). Our server made some great recommendations- everyone in our group enjoyed their meals. I was told the pork knuckle was winner for the meat dishes ordered. As the only non-meat eater, I got the ratskellar pannfisch which was relatively light but a nice dinner after a full day of drinking. Overall a cool restaurant with a lot of history. read more

Stopped by this spot starving looking for a quick lunch. Going down the stairs to the restaurant being underground was cool and the environment was unique and cozy. The restaurant has probably the most premium location in Munich. I ordered Cordon Bleu. It was good. The pretzel was cold and hard. Quite below my expectation of a good German restaurant. read more

I have family in Germany, Munchen being one. I asked them to take me to spots they like to visit and this was one of them. The place is large and if you have time walk around. We only stopped to take a look and decided to stay for Bavarian beers. I had a great time and enjoyed the experience. I have, however, learned some important things about the area and perception of service, which I would like to share so you too can enjoy. 1. Most of the times water isn't free in Germany as it's customary to serve bottled water. 2. Service isn't as warm and cuddly in Bavaria, but tipping is also less. About 5-10%. 3. They will leave you be unless you make it known you need something. Such as raising or motioning with your hand or eye contact. 4. Go for and judge on the vibes, food and local authenticity, and judge them on the local standards. 5. Appreciate when they do, but don't expect everyone to speak English. It's Germany. Hope you enjoy your time in Bavaria. read more
The location is excellent: just under the iconic Neues Rathaus building . We had a group dinner, we had Munich side salad, which was little sour and crispy, for entree we had Grilled pork loin with mushrooms a la creme, market vegetables, spaetzie pasta, well, the pork loin was dry and not juicy at all, while mushrooms on creme was just fine, I didn't finish my plate, finally we had Creme Brulée with berries for dessert, my favorite part was the top caramelized layer, crunchy and sweet. Enormous and very traditional decor and interior. This place is ENORMOUS and there are many different dining rooms. Incredible spaces underneath the Glockenspiel in Marienplatz. Service was a bit slow but staffing appeared thin and the place was packed. Menu's in German and English and with pictures to make your selection much easier. The jaeger schnitzel was really good but the sauce makes this dish. Yummy!! The spatzel was plain but good, better when soaking up the remaining sauce and mushrooms :-) Fried chicken is breaded differently than in the U.S. but none the less, very good. Have to try this place especially for the authentic German cuisine and decor. read more

Wow! This place is one of the biggest restaurants I've ever been to. Very tourist friendly. They have pictures for each dish so you know what you're ordering. I got the Swabian onion steak and it was so flavorful! Great place to go with a big group read more
The food was overall fine, and the restaurant had a nice ambience, but our waiter was very rude. He rarely came to check on us, and when we waved him down, he had a very cold and hostile attitude. The soup we got was pretty bad, the cheese pasta was tasty, and I'm not exactly sure what kind of traditional German dishes we got for our main course, but it was okay. The location is good because it is located right in Marienplatz. read more

Great first taste of German food! Atmosphere was very nice and the location is central to our activities. We went in after the Christmas market and were able to immediately get a table without reservations. They were busy, as expected, but service was good. The pork knuckle was delicious, and the mashed potatoes were an unexpected texture but good. It was all a little heavy so the pickled radish helped. The truffle pasta was amazing! I could lick that plate clean. read more

Came here for a tour group dinner and I wasn't impressed. Service is so so although they do offer to clear plates fairly quickly to keep service going so that is nice. I liked the kellerbier very much and would recommend getting this if you haven't tried it before. The salad appetizer was good,a medley of potato salad, sauerkraut, pickled carrots with a nice dressing. The bread plate included pretzel which was nice but it was easy to overindulge before the entree came out. We had the beef with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes with red cabbage. I kid you not this dish tasted like a microwave dinner from the states. The beef is cut thin and smothered in a bland gravy. Potatoes looked creamy but were not and under seasoned as well. Skip this place. The interior is very nice and historic and may be good for drinks but I would not eat here given all the options nearby. read more
A classy and classic venue for Bavarian and other German standards, Ratskeller is worth all the praise it gets for a great ambience, friendly, efficient staff, and delicious, reasonably priced food. We enjoyed a sampler of wurst, which came with just the right amount of potatoes and apple sauerkraut to even out all that meat. All the different kinds of wursts were grilled perfectly, and each had its own unique flavor, so this was a great way to identify our favorites. They rested in a sweet and meaty gravy full of umami itself. For dessert we had to have the Bavarian Apfelstrudel; we asked our server to recommend a drink to go with. He provided a wonderful local Munich blueberry liqueur, tart and strong - again the perfect complement to the strudel with its cream sauce and cream on the side. Given its private tables and expansive space, I don't think we need another traditional Bavarian spot in Munich... Ratskeller has nailed it! read more

All traditional wooden decor, Bavarian style. Very friendly host who also is our waiter, introduced us to the corner of the booth table that had somewhat provocative artwork (as a joke lol). Very prompt and attentive service. Great draft wheat beers and Pilsner. We had the bratwurst, signature fish (slightly pan fried), and the salami pizza, all delicious Situated right in Munich Old Town, Marienplatz station, they accommodate non-German speaking tourists with warm and welcoming service! They have a pretty big outdoor sitting area right inside of the New Town Hall with a beautiful historic setting, the restaurant is actually right underneath of the new town hall building with 3 different entrances. Very cool, will definitely come back. The interior decor is intimate, also great with large parties. Highly Recommend! read more
