It was really by chance we found this place, despite its popularity we weren't really looking for it. It is a really cool building just brimming with history. It is basically like eating in an old cellar. The ornate ceilings and fun German sayings on the ceiling really add the charm. I found the service to be great and the staff helpful. The food was authentically good German. Nothing crazy or unique here but this is a very traditional place anyway. We got a little bit of everything and liked it all. If in the area it's a cool place, not the best food in Munich but a very cool location! read more

This restaurant is underneath the Old Town Hall right next to Amalienplatz. It can be hard to miss, with several smaller entrances/exits throughout the Old Town Hall. Coming here, we were not expecting much in regards to customer service after eating at the hofbrauhaus, but we were pleasantly surprised. The host acknowledged we were looking for a table and we were seated relatively quickly. The place was very busy and the decor had an authentic vibe to it. We ordered the potato pancakes with sauerkraut as an appetizer and it was very delicious. If sauerkraut is not your thing, they offer the pancakes with applesauce as well. My wife ordered the Carmelized goat cheese salad. There were three large cuts of goat cheese on mushrooms, peppers and spinach. The goat cheese was well cooked and rich in flavor and mixed well with the salad and balsamic dressing. I ordered the beef rouladen. The meat was very tender and the potatoes were creamy. The sauce was delicious as well and I wiped up my plate with some of my wife's bread. For desert we ordered the Kaisershmarrn. It was a raisin, pancake-type desert with apple sauce, and ice cream. The ice cream and applesauce went well with the pastry. It was very delicious and the serving was too big for two people to finish. We ended up taking some home for breakfast the next day. read more

This place is historic and that's great, and so the ambiance is fine - lots of old world which it should be. Service was great- waiter was awesome, even offered to move us due to a large oriental travel group that was seated by us but they were great and wasn't necessary. But where this place looses its stars is the food.... All of it was bland / ordinary / tasteless and luke warm- yeah it's german food but it simply wasn't good. All four of us ordered different items and no one was pleased. My sauerbraten was virtually tasteless- We all just felt it was made with the no real care and that it's all for tourists at a high price. After seeing half eaten plates go back from the travel group next to us we asked them what they thought- they smirked and made jesters as if they didn't enjoy either . I am often in München and have avoided the Marien Platz for food or drink as I was warned by locals but ended up here due to a coworker's desire to eat at the Ratskeller. I'm definitely not the biggest fan of Bavarian foods, as the dishes are either heavy or bland in my opinion. However, this restaurant had a cozy and beautiful Bavarian interior, which doesn't mean that it was small- it was a huge space! We were able to get a seat quickly and served quickly as well. I liked how this restaurant had many menu options, even for the health conscious. I got an Omega 3 salad with sparkling water. The salad was huge! The smoked salmon was tasty, as were the fresh veggies in the salad. The horseradish dressing was also delicious. The price was definitely reflective of the tourist area though, as my total bill was about 30 euros for just those two items. read more

The Arche Noah alone makes the Ratskeller worth a visit, but everything about this restaurant/bar is gorgeous. Under city hall, this basement restaurant is part of a much larger labyrinth. Comprised of multiple seating areas and no actual bar, the food is tremendous, and they have plenty of beer and wine. The atmosphere is more contained and formal, more for dinner, especially for a couple than a place to get drunk and socialize. A must visit when in Munich just to take in the history and beauty. read more

Stopped in here while waiting for a late night train to Frankfurt and was blown away! I don't even know where to begin. The restaurant is huge. You enter from the square and go down stairs to the basement (Keller). The ambience is exactly how you'd imagine a german restaurant to be. The menu is extensive and the staff is charming. I ordered both the beef stew which is more like an American goulash as well as the potato soup. Both came with rye bread which was dry but authentic and homemade. Came due to the Yelp ratings. Was seated to a table of 2 almost immediately. They also provide free wifi, useful since cell service is spotty for being below ground level. Had an asparagus cream soup to start which was delicious and really set our high bar. Unfortunately, the mains were very pricey for the value we got, which was disappointing. We ordered small veal schnitzel w/ fries and lamb sausages. I got a small portion of shnitzel, it was tiny - looked like a kinder portion. The lamb sausages were also mediocre - we've had better quality at the beer houses. We got apple pie for dessert which was pretty good, although the ice cream on the side had frozen chunks. The environment and decor is pretty standard esp. after going into enough traditional German restaurants, they just have slightly better service. If you want to eat traditional Bavarian food for better value and price, head over to a beer house instead (not Hofbrauhaus as it's filled with tourists), and if you want a fancy ambience, head over to the restaurants in the Maxvordstadt area, instead. Ratskeller (despite how this name looks in English) is a great place to eat when in Munich's old town. In the basement of city hall, this restaurant is traditional in German cuisine and very nicely maintained! It's also a very large restaurant! I've come a couple times. The first time I had a full meal here, this past time I just had dessert. The first time I was in a more formal part of the dining room with vaulted ceilings which felt mid-evil in nature. The meal was delicious and the service was top-notch. My second visit this past September was during the season when Italian prunes are in season which lends itself to my favorite cake being made in various parts of Germany. I was fortunate to find it here, but it is made much different than the recipe I'm used to so I had to get over that for awhile. Our server reminded me so much of one of my German aunts and she was really kind and motherly when tending to us. I really enjoyed that actually. Prices are a bit steep though. We came in without a reservation on a Sunday evening this second time and they were able to accommodate us pretty easily. I'll be in Munich in a couple of months and am hoping to return for some good German food! read more

It was just a quick walk to Marienplatz (Munich's central area a la Times Square), where Rathaus (City Hall) is - and accordingly, where Ratskeller is located (basement level). The restaurant had varying places to sit - booths, tables, semi-private rooms for bigger parties. The crowd seemed a bit older though. I had rindsgoulasch (beef goulash) which was really good, came with minimal veggies and a side of spazle (noodle). I also had 'authentic' raspberry iced tea... freshly brewed by Arizona Beverage Co. Hah. All in all the food was good, service was fairly attentive but good as well. And, they have free wi-fi! read more

Very touristy and somewhat pricey restaurant located in the basement of the city hall in Marienplatz. The food, however, was really good, and with a very wide variety. We ordered schnitzel, flammkuchen (Alsatian pizza-like flatbread), some sausages, and vegetarian risotto, as well as Schwarzwalder Kirschtorte (Black Forest cake) for dessert. All of these were were very tasty. The drinks menu seemed alright at first, but there was a very extensive additional one which was printed only in German; this allowed us to find out about and taste some Bavarian wine. The service, while reasonably friendly and professional, was visibly stretched thin due to the very high number of customers. My family and I went here on a whim because we could not find any other open restaurants late at night. We were so surprised when the waiter led us to our table, which took about five minutes to walk to! I've never been in a restaurant that big before, and I would say the interior alone is enough to warrant a visit. They have menus in both German and English. In 2011, I was traveling with school and we went here for my 18th birthday. Service and food were amazing!!!! The atmosphere was really cool and location was perfect. Fast forward to 2018 and my opinion has changed. The man who sat us could've given a warmer welcome but then he really showed his frustration when the table he wanted to place us at wasn't available. Our server gave us asked us which language we wanted our menus in and then didn't come back for a while until we were ready to order. Our food and drinks came out a little to close together because of that so my friend couldn't really enjoy his beer before the meal. All of our food was amazing!!! Probably he best meal we had in Germany and we had been traveling to 5 different cities over two weeks. My lack of stars come from the service. The server acted as if we were bothering him the entire time. We were rushed and when we asked to pay separate via euros he ran off to get the new checks. He came back and frustratingly gave us our change. Before walking off he said "that does not include tip!". Dude we're from America... we're accustom to paying tip and it not being included. I was a server and tend to pay 30% or more when I tip but after the way he treated us and demanded a tip I gave a standard 5% German tip. I always try to try several different restaurants while on vacation, but this place was so delicious that we had dinner here twice during our stay in Munich! The food on both occasions was an authentic, fresh, hearty Bavarian meal... some of the best meals we had during our trip! And the ambiance is cozy - even decorated for Christmas already at the end of November! The service, however, was not the same on both occasions. The first time, we were attended by a wonderful server (wish I remembered his name!). He was helpful, friendly and had a great disposition. On our second visit, we were attended by an older woman named Marion. She was incredibly rude throughout our meal. She rolled her eyes each time we ordered a drink, left our table unattended and with empty plates and glasses on our table, mocked my German as I spoke to her, and when we asked to see the dessert menu, announced the kitchen was closed (and had not previously asked if we wanted dessert). All in all, this place is wonderful and I do recommend anyone looking for traditional Bavarian food go here. However, do ask for another server if you are sitting in Marion's section. This is probably my favorite place to take a first-timer to Munich. Service is excellent, beer is great, and the food is really good. The arched ceilings, wall maintained, dark wood, dirndls and lederhosen really make the diner a part of Bavaria for at least one meal. It is a lot pricier than a mom and pop place and you have to have a reservation on weekends, during the summer and especially during Octoberfest! In pretty much every big destination city there seems to be food choices or types of cuisine that you just have to experience. Sourdough bread and clam chowder in San Francisco for example. Places that serve these foods tend to be right at the center of the most touristy areas in town. The Ratskeller is the quintessential example of this. Serving traditional German/Bavarian food in a historic building with TONS of local atmosphere. I usually am really nervous about eating in places like this because I'm afraid they will sacrifice the quality since they have a guaranteed customer base of tourists en route. Even though I'd have to say I'm not a huge fan of this type of cooking, I really enjoyed and appreciated this experience. The waitress I had was absolutely delightful. Her English wasn't very good, but she made it all work and did so with real joy. It was a pleasure to sit at her table....she was so kind and patient. Breaded pork chops with fries, roast beef swimming in gravy, sausages and Bavarian Cole slaw really aren't high on my list....but my Sauerbraten was done perfectly (for what that's worth). In addition to my waitress and the overall charm of this space....was the bread appetizer. Holy Cow! I'd come back just for the bread. It came with a couple of spreads too and both completely knocked my socks off. Hilariously, I asked what they were and my lovely server said "umm, cheese spread and pig fat with nuts" PIG FAT? I'd already eaten 2/3rds of it by the time I discovered what I'd been eating. I might not have tried it? Now, where the heck am I going to find pig fat to spread on bread instead of butter! This place doesn't even deserve one star. Highly do not recommend, food was disgusting, but service was worse! We walked into the restaurant looking for a place to eat, we just arrived in Germany and wanted some authentic food. We had a party of 8, and was set at a booth. Are waiter, started off as nice, She was being a a little passive aggressive, and "mean" when we were ordering. But we thought, maybe she was having a bad night, or it was just a culture thing. We ordered a few dishes, and most were disgusting. we ordered the pretzel, which came cold and hard. we ordered these "pancakes", that were literally hashbrowns. we ordered three authentic dishes, that were cooked terribly, and just did not taste good. We tried telling the waiter that we did not want the food, but she would not have. Once we got are food, she ignore us for probably hour straight. not asking us if we liked it, or if we needed anything. One of the dishes in particular was terrible, we asked nicely to get a comped. and she, said she would talk to a manager! after this, we just wanted to leave because the food was terrible, and she was being completely utterly rude! but we realize we never got a flat we ordered. We flagged her down, because she would not come over to our table. and she said she forgot to put it in, and will be out in five minutes. at this point, we tell her we do not want it anymore, and she tells us we must pay for it because we ordered it. she brings it out, and we thought we were ordering the flatbread with cheese and meat, to find out the cheese was cold and they was no meat. and they were chopped up carrots, and peas on PIZZA. at this point we get our check, we split in half and one of the party's pay. Then we realized she never took off the meal. we ask her what happened, and she said she cannot do that. and we must pay at this point! we get an argument and she starts to yelling, then she reveals to us that she actually put in the wrong order, and the food that we had at are still our table was not what we ordered! at this point, we are more angry! we have to speak to a manager, and she says "just pay, why do you want to get me in trouble, this is your fault not mine." at this point over frustrated and we have to get over her manager and she is very rude as well. They continue telling us it is all fault and we must pay. at this point, we find this gentleman that seems to be higher up manager and he clears everything up it takes it off a bill. The problem was not with the food, but with the service, the food was not good. We are not used to German food. maybe a German would like it, but it was the problem with her. gaslighting us to think that we ordered the wrong thing. This was probably one of the most elegant and romantic restaurants that I've sat at in Munich. Outside seating has beautiful views of the buildings with gargoyles and perfect weather for lunch. There is seating inside and restrooms. Most of our group ordered the potato soup and Lowenbrau beers - half liter & liter. We had planned to eat at the Christmas market, but it started snowing so hard that we were cold and wet. We were meeting a local for dinner and he suggested the Ratskeller. Very nice! It was warm and dry, quiet enough for a conversation, pleasant atmosphere, and very good food. I had the carp fillet breaded with crushed pumpkin seeds and served with a pumpkin oil aioli and potato salad. My husband had the venison with roasted potatoes. As a huge fan of the Rathskeller in downtown Indy (and having worked there for a bit) I was over the moon excited when we came across the Ratskeller in Munich. We were impressed at how huge the restaurant ended up being because you couldn't exactly tell from the outside. We shared an order of small sausages and sauerkraut and both got a beer. I concede that European waitstaff do not hover, and since we were tucked out of the way, it's that much harder to make eye contact and get her attention, but there were long periods were drinks went empty, and one instance were a refill was requested and just flat never came. I am -still- irked by the unasked-for basket of pretzels plonked on the table, and on the bill. If you want to charge me for things I didn't ask for, could you at least have made sure the things weren't stone cold? I mean, is it worth it? He misunderstood our order and ordered for us the largest size possible for both dishes for two small females. Water will cost you 7.50. Omega salad serves at least 4-6 people. It has a dressing that lacks flavor. Hearty helping of smoked salmon and avocado. Also ordered the Käsespätzle, a dish that is strong in salt flavor, and surprisingly not smooth for cheese. After arriving in Munich, the fiancee and I debated on what to eat as our first meal of our trip. I had earmarked Ratskeller on my list of potential dining options ahead of time, in spite of the fairly popular notion that it was kind of a touristy place. But given the fact that we were staying barely a block away, were still jet-lagged and just wanting to get a nice meal before going back to sleep, Ratskeller seemed like as good of place as any to have a first meal. For us, it was literally right outside of the Marienplatz train stop, so it was very easy to find. Furthermore, the place has like three separate entrances, so it's that much easy to locate. Upon entering, we're greeted by hosts that quickly peg us as tourists and seat us in a hilariously large circular booth. Fortunately for us, they and our server all spoke English and they provided English language menus, making it easy for us to not have to struggle our way through interpretation. And since we were in Deutschland, where the beer flows like water and often times costs less, we started with the booze, to which we went with the locally available Franziskaner brews. I started with a weiss, but decided that I definitely had a taste for dunkels, which lasted the rest of the trip. For food, I decided to embrace the tourist, and went with sausages and potato pancakes. They were served over a bed of cabbage, and everything tasted as good as I had hoped. It was a good choice for a first meal in Munich. From what I understand, tipping is a thing in Munich, but not to the ridiculous degree of America. More like round up to the nearest full denomination, but no more than 2-4 euros, unless it's really that exceptional. Overall, Ratskeller was a really nice place. It wasn't packed when we went, but I've heard it can get quite busy at peak times. The staff was friendly, the ambiance was comfortable, and despite their prime location in the heart of Munich, their prices were reasonable, at least in my opinion. read more

It is THE restaurant to dine when in munich. It is somewhat of a hidden gem as it is hidden under Munich's town hall. However, every Bavarian will definitely know about the magic of this fine 'basement'. On Christmas I invited my family to dine here and there were also amazed by the traditional magic. The turkey we had that night still comes to visit me in my dreams every night, after I imagine falling asleep on its soft breast. Simply traumatizingly good! The beer is obviously a classic as one van get the traditional Bavarian Augustinerbräu or the Löwenbrau from Munich. Another time I dined here I had the Schnitzel which by itself is already magnificent. What i love though, is the fact that you can choose several potato based sides, which is rather rare in Munich.
