I walked past this place so many times, just didn't know what I was missing. It's a funky little hole in the wall but great service from some of the nicest bartenders I ever met. Whether you're looking for a coffee drink made to order and a danish (They're so good!) or a cold beer on tap (they also have a large selection of bottles and cans) or a glass of wine or a cocktail, this is a great place to relax. Absolutely addicting! Strolling down main st on Sunday afternoon I followed a sign that read live music at 1 pm it was 12 ish and half of shops closed as I'm new to this area.. I followed the sidewalk easily marked signs and was very happily surprised by the quant atmosphere and friendly service that greeted me immediately and I had the suggested Mediterranean Quiche made fresh that morning and mocha latte house brew I think... beer on tap if I had wanted and other menu items to choose from as well... coffee house vibe or village pub ! What a neat little spot...tucked back off the main drag. Unfortunately (for me,) I could only stay a short bit and missed the dude setting up to play music for the night, but I was waiting on a reservation for a spot to eat and only had 20 minutes. This spot definitely has the rathskeller vibe screaming. Loved the Coffee Can sign on the restroom. Definitely stopping off to have one of the local beers and a small bite to eat the next time in town...I mean...how often do you see an East German flag?? First visit since new owners took over. 6 or 7 other customers. I sat at the bar the helper took my order. I spent approximately 45 minutes at the bar. Neither owner welcomed me. The female owner made eye contact with me one time and gave a short smile; the male owner did not even once make eye contact with me despite my frequent looks in their direction. I felt horribly uncomfortable. No welcoming, no goodbye. Awful experience! Furthermore, Rathskeller customers, under Adam and Natasha's watch, were rarely assaulted by non-stop, whiny country music as was the case in this occasion. The new owners are welcome to keep my personal mug, on permanent display with many others. I have no further use for it. It is a shame. A great experience and cool overall feel. We ended up at this place by sheer luck. Like any other big-city hipsters, we were looking for antiques in downtown Franklin, and by chance the smell of coffee caught the ladyfriend's nose. I don't know how this happened, but it did. You walk into the dark, personal space and are greeted by a lot of smiling faces and people that genuinely look happy to be there. It could be the beer, but I'm thinking otherwise. What better to have a pub-like atmosphere in the evenings and a coffee-shop during the normal hours of the day? To top that off, there are simple things like playing cards and board games to keep you in your seat for extended periods of time, which means you should be spending your hard-earned shekels on something brewed (one way or another). Since I don't drink coffee much, I am not one to comment on the coffee, but what I did order was spot-on, and the ladyfriend noted that her espresso-thingy was very similar to those we had in Italy, so I guess that's a good thing? The ambiance and feel are what would make me come back. Beer and coffee can be sold anywhere, but the rest is what makes this place tick so well. read more

This place is tucked away behind the storefronts on Main Street in downtown Franklin. I came in early morning for coffee, though they appear to turn into a live music/pub scene on the late night. The inside is pretty big but with a homey vibe. There is some affordable local art on the walls for sale which I love. This isn't an establishment for a coffee snob, which fortunately I am not. It's the kind of place with Torani syrup and $3 lattes which is what I was looking for. I got a blueberry muffin too and it was great. It tasted fresh. Service was very friendly and fast. My husband and I love to go relax with our fur baby who is always welcome and loved on by the owners. I love the wine selection and my husband loves the extensive variety of local craft beers and of course ALL the coffee. A place for a fresh homemade breakfast, lunch, or a snack where you can appreciate the quality and price! For those with a sweet tooth you're going to love their homemade cookies and desserts. It's always my husband and I's go to place whether we want to enjoy a coffee with our new favorite book or want to enjoy a fun filled night with live music and good company! This might be my favorite coffee shop ever. No really, this isn't hyperbole. I've been all over the world but there's something really special about this spot. For starters, it's cozy. That's the best way to put it. I loved it because the only light comes from the front windows and the rest of the shop is basically a basement. There's art on the walls, comfy places to sit, and periodically live music from the little stage in the front. I'm not somebody that believes in "vibes" per-say... but if I did, this one would have GREAT ones. As far as practical aspects, everything they serve is good. The coffee itself is fantastic and so are the pastries -- including the gluten free options. Yet, there isn't the bourgeoise arrogance you'd find at a third-wave shop in Brooklyn, Portland, or even Atlanta. Also, I was shocked when I got two chai tea lattes and two gluten free cookies for $8. They also have a wide selection of local beer and wine, and they stay open late on the weekends. Maybe I spend too much time in the city... but there's something about this little mountain coffee shop that just feels like home. I'll be back again... and then probably again and again. This is definitely a spot to visit when you're in Franklin, and even if you're not -- you won't regret the detour. read more

Wow Small amazing place with perfect atmosphere. Warm vibes and live entertainment allows the patron to relax and enjoy a nice beer or wine or delicious coffee. At last I knew not a vast menu however they do offer small meals. The entertainment is local and delivers an authentic feeling of mountain repose that affords a dynamic atmosphere. Staff is gracious and like to help. Cleanliness is great, location is off the beaten path around the back side of main street but worth the short walk. We needed a place to connect to wifi for a morning meeting while on vacation, and this place ended up being just the ticket. We ordered a fresh out of the oven muffin, quiche, a latte, and a hot cider and everything was great! They let us open a tab and we're totally cool with us hanging out to use the wifi. It's definitely a locals place to grab a cup of coffee, lots of folks came in and hung out at the bar to drink a coffee and chat. Only been here once, and I may never make it again, but I loved it. It's hidden behind the main strip of downtown Franklin in an authentically old building. Inside is gorgeous: rough concrete on the floors, real bricks in the walls, flags tacked to the ceiling. By day it's a hip coffee shop, with good coffee and fresh baked stuff, including stuffed baked sandwiches I'm still sorry I missed trying. OMG, my husband and I just dropped into this coffee shop for coffee and food and in walked 2 men with a huge mastiff dog (220 lbs) and another small dog similar to a Yorker. It was frightening to have that mastiff getting near us and blocking the isles in the store. These dogs clearly were not service dogs and it was a NASTY experience. Well, the dogs got to stay and we took our beverages and left. We are told that the dogs are regulars. How disgusting! It seems the restaurants service animals and allow humans who pay to leave. For Franklin, this place is a gem (you'll get that if you visit the town)! Rathskeller is a bar/coffee shop/cafe/music venue behind the main street of Franklin, NC. They don't open until 11am, so don't expect to get your early morning brew, but they're open through the night to accommodate local performers, town folk, and tourists. They serve sandwiches at lunch (not sure about dinner food), and they have some great coffee and beer. They only had 2 brews on tap when I was there (both German) and they were ICE cold! The owners/staff are friendly, there are board games in the back, and free wifi. What more can you ask for? read more

And if you are a local for long enough you get your very own personal glass that they have on a shelf (really cool to see).
