If you're looking for solid Virginia wine with ample seating options this is your place. We were looking for a socially distanced option as we were trying to bubble up before our upcoming travel. Tastings are provided in to go test tubes and glasses that you can enjoy inside, outside or on their covered rooftop deck. We opted for the deck which had large fans blowing and expansive views of the property. We could even enjoy the Live music that was outside below us. We split the fresh warmed baguette and a small cheese plate. Very comfortable even in the sweltering 90 degree summer heat. Their sparkling varietals were standouts for us. Also loads of seating in the shade outside closer to the music for folks who didn't want to walk the tall staircase to the roof deck. Will be back! read more

Very cool cellar/tasting room in Virginia. The feel of the place is more akin to California wineries, which makes sense because the family came from CA and relocated to Virginia. The wines were surprisingly good, particular the VX2 (Viognier blend) and the Cab Sav. The only downside is the price of the wine, which is also similar to some more established California Vineyards (25-40 a bottle on average). Their wine is good, for sure, and we would definitely purchase more if we found it locally. Enjoy a glass on the porch when you visit, it's very peaceful. read more

After reading some of the reviews on this place, it seems that there are just some people who are not bright enough to use Yelp. To give a negative rating for some of the reasons that were given is pretty pathetic...especially those who didn't even taste the wine! My wife and I started coming to Rappahannock in the Fall of 2009. We immediately joined the Wine Club and have been hooked ever since. While we both have different tastes and preferences in wines, neither of us have ever been able to complain that a Rappahannock Cellars wine was BAD. Actually, our experience has been quite the opposite. We're finding ourselves enjoying wines that we previously didn't care for, due to the high quality at Rappahannock. The staff at Rappahannock is fantastic. We have always felt very welcome, and at times, part of the family. We're almost always remembered by name, and the staff always seems happy to see us. The setting is very serene, and the porch seating is very relaxing. I like this place because it's NOT commercialized. It's a little off the beaten path. They're not part of the big tourist crowd like the Pearmund wineries are...they just let their wines speak for themselves, and people show up. We've also enjoyed their summer events, ranging from barrel tasting to barbeque...this place is hands-down our favorite winery. On a Saturday afternoon, after a long week of work, it sure is nice to head down there, sit on the porch, listen to the live bands that play at the nearby barn, and drink some delicious wine. I think this winery needs a few lessons on customer service. On 9/8/18 myself and nine other women, in our dresses and sunhats for our bride's bachelorette party, drove in the nasty weather to Rappahannock Cellars for a wine tasting. We were pleasantly surprised that inside it was relatively empty; there were a few people toting boxes in and out, and a few adults with, surprisingly, young children. The tasting room was open, and our bride asked the man working there if we could have a tasting. His response was "For groups larger than 7, we need a reservation." Ok, fair enough. Since the winery was empty, she then asked if we could split into smaller groups and meet with two different employees. His response was to pout, clasp his hands together, and condescendingly say "We don't 'do' bachelorettes." ...you don't 'do' bachelorette parties? On rainy day, with an empty building, save for some adults and...kids? You don't want the business of 10 people? This was pretty frustrating, so we got BACK in the cars, in the rain, and went on to two other wineries who were slam packed, and welcomed our group for a tasting happily. Imagine my surprise later on when we went to go look at the website for Rappahannock and it says 'to better accommodate your experience, all bachelorette/bachelor parties (regardless of group size) must have a reservation.' Well, WHAT a surprise! I can absolutely understanding wanting a reservation, that's fair! At the point that our lovely bride asked if we could have split into two groups, the employees response should have been 'I'm sorry, we do require a reservation for bachelorette parties, but let's look at the schedule to see what we have available later!' Which would have worked out fine, as our party DID look at the schedule later on in the day, and they had a 3PM appointment they could have booked for us. Lying to us to get rid of us, for whatever reason, was 110% not the right answer. So - ultimately this winery turned away, at minimum, $200.00, and pissed off 10 women and potential customers, not to mention upset our beautiful bride on a day that should have been all about her. Why? No clue. I do know we won't be going back, and I plan to spread the word to other people I know not to waste their time or their money. read more

I attended an event at this winery this past weekend, and fell in love with the wines and the owner and staff. The owner's daughter and her bluegrass trio provided the music for the event, and they were outstanding - she has a truly versatile voice and they played more than just bluegrass for us. The winery allowed us to bring in some fine cheeses, and paired some of their wines with the cheese, fruit, prosciutto and ham. They also let us bring in a busload of people on a busy weekend day, and provided tasting stations for us in the barn, and a full winery tour. You can tell their winemaker loves what he does. I was fascinated by some of their wine making processes as well. I ended up going home with several bottles of their 2007 Cab Franc and 2007 Meritage, both of which were strong wines. I also enjoyed their Voigner. We sampled their port and a sun made wine (yes, really), as well as a Chardonay and a Sauvignon Blanc, but sadly I couldn't take them ALL home, and being a red wine girl, I stuck with my reds. The only wine I was less happy with was the Cabernet Sauvignon - it was a very light, summery and fruity Cabernet, and I personally prefer mine dark and foreboding, with lots of peppers and spices. I was in from out of town for the event, and if you are lucky enough to live nearby - drive out. It's worth the traffic on 66 coming out of DC and worth a drive in from elsewhere, too. I give them 5 stars for the entire pleasure of a day as well as their wines and service. read more

I had the great fortune of having the amazing Allan Delmare lead a private winery tour and tasting for my small group. The occasion was my mother's birthday and Allan made it a truly special experience. It's certainly one that we will never forget. In fact, it might have been the finest winery tour and tasting experience in my life, it was that good! We first met Allan in the main tasting room, where he led us downstairs to start the tour of the main building's wine-making operations. He explained the how all of the equipment was used in the wine-making process, which was very interesting. He then opened several bottles of wine for the tasting portion of our tour, including a few special / limited edition / experimental bottles. He carefully explained all of the wines and the processes that went into making each one unique. His knowledge of the wines in unparalleled, considering that he's one of the vineyard's winemakers. And it was a really nice touch to have this tasting surrounded by all of the equipment, it felt like we were part of the crew! But the tour was only just beginning, because Allan then led us out to the paddock area where we hoped into one of the vineyard's 4x4 gators to go out and see the actual vines. Allan narrated while we drove, explaining the history of the vineyard and all of the processes that go into planting, caring for, and picking the grapes. It's a huge, beautiful property, and Allan allowed us to see virtually all of it. The entire time, he was very patient in answering all of our questions, and seemed like he had fun too. After the scenic tour, Allan led us to one of the external barrel rooms that was used for special events, providing more history and background along the way. We then went back to the main building, where Allan surprised us by taking us on an additional tour of the special distillery operation he's managing, called Dida's Distillery. This area is like a mad scientists lab, but better, since you can drink all of the creations he's making. He gave us a few sips of some awesome spirits he's developing. Some were really potent, and all were delicious. Allan is a man of many talents, and I look forward to drinking some of the future offerings from his Distillery. On the way back to the upstairs tasting room, we stopped by the other barrel section where Allan let us take pictures and see more of the wine-making process. After going back upstairs to the main tasting room where we started, we were excited to learn that the tour wasn't ending! Allan showed us the special members area and tasting area on the main floor, and we then went up the stairs to another tasting room, followed by the outdoor seating area overlooking the vineyard. The views are wonderful up there. At this point, Allan told us the tour was complete, but that we were welcome to stay and eat and drink. We did just that, and purchased several nice bottles before heading home. I want to offer my sincerest thanks and gratitude to Allan for dedicating so much of his time to our tour. His generosity made my mother's birthday an incredibly special event, and she still talks about the experience he created for us. Allan is really the best part of the Rappahannock winery - if you have a special occasion that you'd like to celebrate at a vineyard, you absolutely need to sign up for the special tour here with Allan. I didn't love this winery. I had such high hopes for it. the exterior was gorgeous and looked nice for a picnic. The inside was nicely decorated. Not a super comfy tasting room though. Just counters to walk up to. No place to sit and enjoy the wine you got, except for outside, and it was too hot for that. We stepped up to do a tasting and got such a lukewarm reception. The lady assisting us was really very indifferent and cold. The only reason this isn't two stars is because we fell in love with a Rose' they had (goes well with spicy Thai food). The rest of the wine was OK. You only get to try one dessert wine, which is just as well because they are ULTRA sweet. Go for the Rose'. Leave before anyone gives you major attitude. read more

This was the last stop I made while doing a whirlwind tour of the Shenandoah Valley vineyards, and it didn't disappoint. The first thing I noticed when I walked it was the "members only" room--which made me feel like the place was a bit posh and penalized out-of-towners, like me, who are just in the area for a weekend. Also some of their wines are only for members, which adds to the poshness. During our wine tasting, we had a number of good tasting wines. I can't tell you which ones I enjoyed because I was already quite drunk, but I can tell you that if you chat nicely a bit with the staff who is giving you a tasting they will let you taste some of the members only wine too. Apparently we didn't chat nicely enough to be able to buy a bottle of said members only wine, though. Anyway, this place was great for a visit. They have a couple horses right next door that are nice to pet, even though the signs say not to. read more

What wonderful people run this place...everyone is nice and as helpful as can be. In fact, when we arrived with 2 carloads, the big boss opened up the back bar and served us all himself. Love that kind of helpfulness. I thought the claret was good for an East Coast joint, and the 06 Viognier was nice--pretty well-balanced, if you ask me. There is also a food cart, mostly serving hot dogs, but a tasty dog hits the spot during a long day of wine tasting in the NOVA. Oh, and we bought their mulled wine spices, which were tasty during a nasty storm last month. 5 stars for the people, 4 for the wine (and I'm comparing to other VA wineries, not CA or OR, against which the wine might be a 3). Either way, you get to bring home your glass and that makes visiting Rappahannock a winner in my book! read more

Having been to Bordeaux, Napa, and to most of the wineries in VA, I can say with confidence that RC has some of the best reds you'll find in the area. The whites were too, but it's rare that a VA winery has decent reds. The people were nice and informative and it wasn't too much of a tourist circus like some of the places off of Rt. 7... Negatives: - As with all VA wineries, price per bottle was high - A bit frugal with the pours, but you can always ask to re-taste! - Tasting fee = $8 = high (but can be free if you're a member) I was in Bordeaux recently and the most we paid for a tasting was 3 euros read more

Yes another good Norton to add to the list of Norton Wines in Virginia. Stopping here was a pleasure to say the least. I didn't enjoy the wines as much as the group I was with so my rating here is for the group not just mine. The tasting room was clean and inviting. Defintely would come back for another trip to buy more wine! Solera and Noblesse Rouge were the two wines I remember the best on my palate. One of the best wine cellars in the area. Whichever type of wine you have a taste for, this cellar excels in every type. Some of their wines have won accolades from the Virginia Governor and other various wine competitions. I especially like their Viogniers since I like my wine white and on the sweeter side. Unfortunately, my wine pallete isn't refined enough to vouch for their other bottles, but the few friends I've tasted with were impressed with the consistent quality of their wines. I forget how many tastings you get here, but for $5 you can keep the glass. If you bring the glass back on your next visit, you get the tasting for free. They change their tasting selections with season, giving you plenty reason to keep coming back. read more

One of the best family-friendly vineyards in the area! Rappahannock is probably the best blend (no pun intended :P) of family-friendly ambiance, relatively inexpensive tastings, and great wines. A lot of the vineyards in the area are charging between $8 - $12 for tastings and you might get to taste 5 wines. Rappahannock lets you taste around 8 or 9. All of them are very good. The pourers are super knowledgable and the location is right by two other vineyards for easy touring. They're extremely kid-friendly... which for me isn't a priority, but those who want to make wine-tasting a family event (I'll never understand that) it's there for ya. I ain't gonna lie, it was a bit like Romper Room in one of their rooms, but you kinda forget about it mid-way through the tasting. The picinic area's large and perfect for grabbing a bottle and snacking on your home brought bites or their cheese and cracker spreads. read more

One of my two favorite VA wineries. Have been a member for quite some time...folks here are very friendly and the wine is very tasty. Wish I lived closer. We used their wine for our wedding and it worked out perfectly. Also, their members area is pretty comfy for rainy day lounging. Reminder, like any local winery...you have to go and taste...and if you like it, buy enough to last because the next vintage may taste different and while that is ok....you may just miss out on that exceptional year...like the Port that tasted like tootsie rolls. read more

Pros: The wines are good. I enjoyed most of them, and I really appreciated the knowledge of our tasting host (turns out she is the daughter of the owner). The tasting room is pleasant. We were greeted quickly, and the tasting had a nice pace. They were welcoming, I think this would be a good place for someone who might feel intimidated about wine tasting. On one visit, I ordered a glass of the Meritage and a baguette after the tasting. The baguette was tasty. On another visit, I had the fruit and cheese plate. I liked it too. The location is pretty and easy to find. Cons: This winery is popular, so you may encounter a bachelorette party here. That's fun when you are part of the party, not so fun when you are not. Summary: Rappahannock Cellars is one of my favorite Virginia wineries/vineyards. The wine is good and the people are nice. read more

We have been here a few times with a friend that is a member. The member comes only 2-3 times per year to pick up her wine because of the distance from her house. However, we gladly go each time. They have an expanded members tasting area which is very nice. On a couple occasions we have brought our own food and had a very nice afternoon tasting wine and eating a picnic. As mentioned elsewhere, there is a designated dog area. But rather than leaving our pup sitting under a table in the rain on our recent visit he just stayed and slept in the car without issue. I would consider this wine to be near the top of Virginia wines. Honestly, one of the few VA wineries where the wine justifies the $20-30/bottle price point. These folks are originally from California and actually know how to make good wine. Highly recommend visiting once in a while if you're up for a pretty healthy drive into the country. read more

The amazing view is what makes it 4 stars at this vineyard, on your way to the mountains. We veered a left to make a pit stop at this quaint vineyard. We pre-gamed, believe it or not, before our adventurous hike to Old Rag Mountain. I was sold on the Chardonnay however other party members were sold on the signature red blend. Nevermind them. I will tell you their Chardonnay is one of the few non-oak, sweet Chardonnays you will EVER taste in your lifetime. Ever. The view on the front patio of the mountains overlooking the grape vineyards was what made our trip not only unforgettable, but breathtaking. No matter the crowd, enjoying our glass(es) of wine and plate of charcuterie was definitely worth our time. The moment you realize you were outside of the city boundaries and took in the fall/spring scenery, that's when you can truly enjoy a glass of wine and a slice of cheese. read more

This is that place.... super touristy, gift shop and all..... we knew by the packed parking lot. Plus, there is no view. Reds are definitely king here. They have some terrific red wines here. The Meritage, Norton and Claret are standout wines. The whites were decent, but they didn't stand out as much as the reds did. They have a Vidal that they prepare as a dessert wine which I thought was interesting. The winery itself is very nice with an amazing looking tasting bar. read more

There's nothing incredibly negative about Rappahannock Cellars, but there's nothing that really makes me want to come back. Wineries are not just about wine, it's about the atmosphere, the view, the experience. We went to Rappahannock after a day of fly-fishing and we drive into a semi-crowded parking area with a limo there. There are reasons that small quaint wineries don't allow limos. It got worse from there. They had live music playing (which can be nice) but they were playing it so loud that even though we chose the farthest picnic table away, we could still hear everything they played (REM, the Eagles, Tom Petty...weird) The wine was okay and their tastings are really cheap if you have been there before and a tastings does have 8 wines to sample. But I'd give it a skip and find one of the real gems out there in Va wine country. read more

We had a lovely visit on a snowy Sunday and were able to enjoy the Wine Club Members Tasting room. A perk of having my friend with us who is a member. We had a wonderful tasting and as this was my first visit to Rappahannock I was impressed by the size of their regular tasting room and their members tasting room a true perk of joining their wine club. Full regular tasting was 10 wines and the wine club tasting was an additional 6 wines. I really loved their 2010 Noblesse Rouge which I think is a steal for the $22.50 it's being sold for. I'll be back to this one again! read more

This was a fantastic visit! Visiting a few wineries in the area for the day, this is one of my favourite i've been to. The staff was very friendly, extremely knowledgable about the wines on offer as well as the winemaking process in general. The tasting room was spacious and clean. Everyone's tastes vary, but just to say... their Viognier and Noblesse Viognier were both among the best I've ever tasted. OK, so this review will have to be in direct comparison to the Linden Vineyards, as I've only been to two Virginia Wineries. The place is quite cute, and easy to get to. There were no tours of the vicinity, and the wine pourer didn't really know too much about the wines she was pouring us. I was surprised that she didn't have many answers to the questions we were asking. Which was disappointing. I also didn't care for the fact that I was carded by a dude who was younger than me. But the wines themselves were tasty, and the presentation was very clean and crisp. read more

Has a pet area outside where you can leash your dog to an old fence in full sun but they wouldn't (unlike most other Virginia vineyards) allow us to enter the tasting room with our four-legged companions on a leash. My girlfriends and I stopped at Rappahannock Cellars for some wine while we were in the area over the weekend. It was a gorgeous day out and we decided to sit outside at one of the picnic tables. We split 2 bottles of wine and enjoyed the awesome views. The employees were very helpful in recommending wines to suit all of our tastes (there were 5 of us and we did not do a full tasting). I am a choosy wine drinker, but I recommend Rappahannock over all other Virginia wineries I have visited. All of their wines are high quality and affordable. If you join the wine club you have access to a very nice place to relax and enjoy a glass. They offer large discounts on bottles to club members. On a recent visit, Theresa was extremely helpfully picking up a wine club shipment and helping us relax and enjoy the view and wine. Rappahannock Cellars is a must for Virginia wine tourists. read more
