I came here with some coworkers and had a great time for lunch. We ordered tons of food and the dishes were all really awesome. The tea leaf salad was very interesting. I've never eaten fermented tea leaves before. When you mix everything up the result was actually quite delicious. The sesame chicken was one of the best I've had. It was fried perfectly and just the right amount of sweetness. The fried tofu puffs were okay. I'm not a huge fan of these in general and this restaurant was no exception. The coconut rice was delicious. I guess they cook rice in coconut milk or something. Basil chili beef wasn't bad either. Neither was the eggplant. I could get these two dishes at most Chinese places though. I would definitely come back and try some of the other dishes. read more

Check your bill for 4% ACA surcharge (should only be 3%) This place is only getting 2 stars for two reasons: 1) Their paratha had nice texture. 2) The manager was amicable (continue reading) Everything we ordered was salty--salty to the point where I could feel the food robbing my body of its moisture. Second, any food we ordered that had any garlic in it, had TOO much garlic. I'm pretty sure if Dracula came up to me, I could turn him into dust just by breathing on him. Now the best part; the tab: We had a party of 5, and they charged us 20% gratuity when their menu specifically said only parties of 6 or more would be charged 20%. Now I understand that we are in Palo Alto and tipping north of 15% is the norm, but seriously, it only takes 1-2 minutes at most to confirm how large a party is before you apply a 20% gratuity. Additionally, this place charges a 3% ACA surcharge, BUT DOUBLE CHECK YOUR BILL. They charged us 4%. So we brought these two charges to the manager's attention and he made no effort to argue the mistakes and immediately remedied the situation (thus the extra star). I'm a huge fan of Burma Superstar and have been meaning to try this place forever. My first impression based on looks was that this was more fine-dining sophisticated Burmese food - just didn't seem as casual. Ordered the tea leaf salad, garlic noodles with duck, pumpkin pork curry, and coconut rice. The tea leaf salad is just as amazingly delicious as Superstar's. Lots of great colors and textures and flavors from the Burmese tea leaves, sunflower seeds, peanuts, sesame seeds, tomatoes, and other ingredients. The garlic noodles were good, but I actually think they could have used even more garlic! I love noodles and I love garlic! The duck meat (it costs extra to add it) was a yummy touch. The pumpkin curry was my least favorite thing that we ordered. The curry itself was yummy - great flavor that went well with the delicious coconut rice. We ordered it spicy but it wasn't really very spicy. The pork meat was sort of chewy and the pumpkin wasn't as tasty as I hoped it would be. I wouldn't order this particular dish again. Well..maybe I would get the curry with tofu instead of meat. I would definitely come back to try more things from the menu. I sneaked a look at the tables next to me and my food envy kicked in! My friend and I came here for dinner on a weeknight, before what one would call prime dinnertime rush, and this place was already packed! This can only be a good sign, right?! It definitely was! The hostess was super gracious and explained to us that due to an incoming reservation, we were only able to dine in if we finished before a certain time (it was over 1 hr, which was perfectly reasonable). Happy that we could get a table, we were immediately seated and brought menus and waters. The space was somewhat limited; you could see that they tried to squeeze in as many tables and chairs as they can without making it too uncomfortable for the party sitting next to you. Luckily, probably due to the pressure to have us finish our food by a certain time, we didn't have to wait too long for our food. We ordered the mango salad, pumpkin chicken, and the crispy chicken. The mango salad was absolute divine! It was so fresh, well apportioned, and very flavorful. There was a nice balance between the rootsiness of the roasted garlic and the tangy zest of the mango and lemon juice. The pumpkin and chicken dishes were also delicious, though the crispy chicken reminded me of a fancier, enlarged version of Panda Express's orange chicken... This was the first time I've had Burmese food, and I really enjoyed it! The entire atmosphere of the restaurant was great, as was the service. We started out with the chicken palata which was really great! The sauce didn't have a huge coconut flavor and the multi-layer bread had a really nice crisp on the outside. My brother ordered the garlic noodles with duck, and it was okay. It was a little bland, and I wish there was more garlic. We also ordered the fiery chicken tofu and basil chili beef. The chicken tofu was a bit too salty for me, but the chicken was really delicious and tender. The basil chili beef was fantastic. The beef was cooked super well and had a ton of flavor. We also got brown rice, which was really nutty and had great texture. For dessert, we ordered the sweet sticky rice with mango ice cream. The mango ice cream is the best I've ever had, and it perfectly complemented the sticky rice. We ordered a Surfer Punch, a virgin Daiquiri, and ginger ale. I didn't really love the drinks, but they were okay. We had Samosas and Northern Fried Tofu to start. The tofu had a really soft texture and tasted like fluffy eggs. I loved these! We got the Ohnoh Kawt Swe Coconut soup, which I recommend if you like noodles. So savory! We also got Sesame Fried Beef, Chicken Curry, and the Salmon Lemongrass Fusion. These dishes were fine, although not very unique, and the curry was marked as spicy, but wasn't. My buddies and I like to occasionally get together for dinner and catch up on everything that's going on. Some come from the city while others travel as far as San Jose to meet up, while others are in San Mateo and Palo Alto. That's why we decided to meet in the middle and get dinner at Rangoon Ruby in Palo Alto. We were seated quickly and one of my buddies happened to be Burmese so he ordered for us. We ordered the famous tea leaf salad, monk hingar, ohnoh kawt swe, nan gyi dok, basil chili beef, and coconut rice. All the dishes were delicious and authentic. Portion sizes were on the small side however but I think most of us left satisfied. My favorite dish was the tea leaf salad and the ohnoh kawt swe, and the coconut rice was fantastic as well. I really need to learn to make that at home. I've been to many Burmese restaurants before but Rangoon Ruby was definitely the most fancy, and the prices reflect it with a $2-5 premium on each dish, which I guess is acceptable in Palo Alto. They have a fancy iPod-based ordering system which, while novel, makes for a really awkward experience when you see the waitstaff staring at their iPods while walking around the dining room. It makes it feel as if they're not paying attention to the customers. Overall however, I really enjoyed the meal and I'm a huge fan of Burmese food. 1. They use a QR based menu and ordering system. You order through their app and have to register with email to order. The app's payment system went down and we had trouble paying. Probably another 15 minutes to get out of the restaurant as a result. 2. The food is meh. Not awful, but it's basically PF Chang's for Burmese except not as good as PF Chang's. I ordered very spicy, and it wasn't that hot. The food is kind of flavorless unlike other Burmese food I've had. One chicken dish we had was way oversalted and just plain bland. My curry was very small portions, and my wife's was very large portions, so your mileage may vary. The samosa's were below mediocre. 3. They add surprise garbage charges to the bill, calling them "Mandated Costs". This is BS and made me more upset than the 4% that they charged. At least be upfront about it if you're going to do it. We were sat down quickly for dinner around 8pm. We ordered 3 dishes: Tea Leaf Salad- the tea leaves were too salty and not enough romaine lettuce. Too many crunch condiments like flakes and nuts. Not really a salad. Nan Gyi Dok- The noodles were soggy, but I guess that is how it is suppose to be? It was on the sour side, but still edible. Fiery Beef Tofu- this dish was slightly better than the tea leaf salad, but still salty. The beef was tender and flavorful. Food seem a little on the expensive side. Seems exotic haha. Our waitress was really nice though and food came fast. Maybe Burmese food is an acquired taste? A bit too adventurous for us, or maybe should try more authentic instead. I ate lunch here with my friend around noon and it wasn't that busy. It was my first time here and my friend's second time so we were trying to decide what to order. I looked at their menu online before coming so I was somewhat prepared on what to order. The restaurant wasn't that big but it seemed just right. We were seated near the window which had blinds to lower if it was too sunny. We decided to order the Mango Chicken ($15), the Rangoon Lemongrass Chicken ($14) and Burmese-Indian rice ($1.50). We waited maybe five to ten minutes before our food came out. It looked like it wasn't going to be enough, but the portions of everything was enough for two people. They all tasted good to me and the Burmese-Indian rice was a change of pace for me. I'd recommend either of those dishes and the Burmese-Indian rice if you can't decide what to order. Today we went to the restaurant for my husband's birthday. We already been there with our friends. It was good then.So we are returning customers to this restaurant. We ordered - tea leaf salad which was worst and all mixed up. - Samosa soup where there is no Samosa but falafel. - Pad thai which was okay - Chili chicken where the food was cold on one side and hot on another side. When we asked them about it, they soon went to reheat that food and gave it back to us. When we told them that we don't want this food. They were arguing to us saying that food was cooked today and sometimes it happens like this. They said they can do nothing about it. We were shocked by this customer service. They were rude and impatient to listen to us. We were totally disappointed and had to go out of the restaurant unhappily. Our good occasion was ruined because of this. The food was just okay, but we were especially turned off by the way the restaurant nickels and dimes you. The salads were already $18.95, but if I wanted it spicier, then it was $2.00 extra. Likewise, hot sauce is listed as a side dish in the menu, and was $2.00. There was an extra fee on our bill listed as "state mandates," which I surmise is the restaurant passing off the expense of providing required benefits to their employees. This restaurant chain was already in the news for defrauding its employees. One mediocre salad, one entree, and a couple of drinks brought the bill to nearly $90. Our boss decided to throw going away lunch for our interns at Rangoon Ruby couple of weeks ago, so I reluctantly went. I did not get sick this time, but I did avoid the salad. I sampled many dishes and all were just mediocre. Service was attentive, but more or less robotic. Place is pretty dirty, there were spider webs and dirt all over the ceiling. Back hallway where the restrooms are was looking pretty greasy and did not smell clean. Wait staff appeared to be somewhat unmotivated and therefore leaving me depressed to be there. I've eaten at Rangoon Ruby once (pre-pandemic) and have had delivery twice, including last night. The food travels and delivers REALLY well. Broths, sauces, and some other parts of the dish are packaged in containers for you to mix at home, so everything is that much fresher. Tea leaf salad is top notch. Making reservations was quick and easy, therefore We were seated immediately. This place is narrow so the tables are very close to each other. If you have a kid with strolls indont recommend bringing a stroller due the narrow walking spots. The decor is what caught my eye the most. I loved seeing the pics on the wall because you can see and learn about the count. The food here is a amazing. We started off with the Sesame chicken salad, which was fingering good. It was so good we ended ordering a second one. We also order the Rangoon lemongrass chicken dinner, walnut shrimp dinner with a side of Jasmine rice. We decided to share our dishes so we could taste alittle of each dish.
