I took my FSC test here and also have used their range multiple times. Their staff has always be friendly and helpful. We rented a handgun once, (the first time we went in), it kept jamming, not sure if it was due to being used so much or not being cleaned or something else, but either way from then on we opted to bring our own firearms. But that is the one blimp in the otherwise pleasant experiences Ive had. Range masters is my go to range, and will continue to be so. read more

This is a great business. I took the ccw renewal class which was excellent. The instructor was top notch and a visiting deputy sheriff from fresno sat in on the class offering valuable insight. The course is 8 hours long including the qualifying portion but it didn't seem that long. Ken the main instructor was excellent pushing us to excel sprinkling in various stories along the way which made the class all the more interesting. When initially contacting rangemaster I e-mailed John and he responded quickly letting me know there was a class the following day. It couldn't of worked out better! Unfriendly and unhelpful! Luckily, there are a lot of options for gun shops in this area. 4 Seasons, Dicks, Big 5 are all much better options. As for ranges, SLOSA range, located near Cuesta college, is so much better. There are friendly and it is much less expensive to shoot there. Avoid this place at all costs! read more

Wasn't impressed. I had only shot once before, not counting BB and pellet guns, and could have used more direction. This place is EXPENSIVE. $28 per person for the two of us, sharing a rented gun. The people weren't very helpful and our wait was extremely long. It took 30+ minutes to get in the range. The people were not very knowledgable, and offered us hand guns even though we are both 18. We said we could only shoot long guns, and they only had 2 that we could shoot. I don't believe there are any restrictions on 18 year olds except not being able to shoot hand guns, and yet they wouldn't let us shoot most of the long guns. Ridiculous. read more

Hello tactical yelpers. If you live in SLO and you want an indoor range, you're stuck with Range Master. The untrained and cocky staff would be more than happy to get you on a their carpeted range after a twenty minute wait. I had an associate brag about their selection and tell me that Kern County residents keep them in business. I know a lot of gun nuts in Kern County and none of them go to little Range Master. Let me start with the range. It's small, has carpet, and the lighting is poor. You are asked to sweep up your brass and put it in a bucket after you're done shooting. What the heck is that about? Every range I've ever been to just has you push your brass forward and they do the work. The range is pretty old and could use a re-model, no it needs to be demolished. I did hear they are opening a new range soon. Hopefully it's bigger and doesn't have carpet. They have a decent selection of guns with decent prices. But the staff consists of Law Enforcement wannabes who think they are the bee's knees. On my first visit I found the staff to be okay. My second visit I dealt with a gentleman who claimed he was in law enforcement previous to working there . He was incredibly cocky and really didn't know his butt from a whole in the ground when it came to firearms. If you live and SLO, you must go here; it's the only indoor range. Perhaps they need to come to Bakersfield and see a couple indoor ranges and learn from the crazy right-wing gun nuts of Kern County to learn some things. I'll leave you with these gems people: "Perfect practice, makes perfect" "Slow is steady, steady is fast" And please, when it comes to Pistols, go .45 ACP, or go home. There's a reason why gang bangers use 9mm and .380, they don't know any better. read more

My friend wanted to bring us to a shooting range, and this was the only spot. We had to take a test before shooting anything. After passing the test, we chose to shoot with 50 rounds of 9mm with a glock and another 50 rounds of 45mm with a pistol. It was my sister's first time shooting a gun, so I had to teach her the basics. The only thing the workers told us about was just the parts of the gun. Nothing more. That was the downside of shooting here. There were only 4 lanes. Pretty small, but it was alright. There's a window to watch the shooters. In the end, the price came to about, $130 for 5 people. Range Master - Gun/Rifle Ranges Near Me - San Luis Obispo, California

My husband and I recently went into Range Masters in San Luis Obispo because we were interested in purchasing two new 9mm hand guns. While we have shot a great deal with our shotguns, we had very little experience shooting with hand guns. We were hoping to try out a few different hand guns in the indoor range and looking for some help in steering us into a good starter gun. I was honestly a little cautious as I had read some of the past reviews and it seemed that the customer service was a little lack luster. However, as there aren't any other indoor ranges we were short for choice and thought we would give it a go. From the moment we arrived we were greeted with smiles and frankly a level of service that surpass most other customer service places we have visited in all of San Luis Obispo. The guys were extremely helpful and patient. They explained all the different guns without being condecending or rude. We never felt rushed or belittled in the slightest. We ended up trying out seven different hand guns in the indoor range and also found the range guy to be super helpful. Our experience was fantastic and nothing like what a few of the past yelpers had commented. Either they were difficult customers or they have hired some really great new employees recently. Either which way, I would honestly recommend this place to anyone who is in the market for a gun or just wants a great place to go shoot. read more

I vacation in SLO frequently and love to visit this range as well as others. I had a Colt Commander jam on me with a live round in the chamber. I met with John and explained my problem. He immediately took my gun into the range and was able to fix the problem. Fortunately, it was an ammo issue and the gun was fine. The point of this review is that John stopped what he was doing, fixed the problem all at NO CHARGE. The staff at this place is very friendly and helpful. They have done upgrades for me on some of my other guns. If you are a gun guy, this is the place to go. read more

This is my first Yelp review. I signed on just so i could leave feedback on the rude and poor customer service i have repeatedly experienced in this store. I'm going to have to pile on all of the other poor customer service reviews. Buyer beware. My advice? Go to some other dealer or get it online. I always shop local if I can. I am willing to pay a little extra locally than to buy online. But in this case I will avoid future dealings with Range Master whenever possible. Their male staff's attitude sucks. As an aside, their female ARE helpful and DO extend basic courtesy to their customers. But all in all, it will make you wish you purchased somewhere else. So far the last 4 times I have been in the store and required assistance beyond simply taking an item to the register I have gotten a rude, curt, annoyed attitude. I'll just list two experiences of mine. Experience number 1 I purchased a pistol from Range Masters. After it arrived I called and asked how late they were open - 530pm. I told the gal I would be coming directly after work and would be cutting it close, could I still pick it up that day? She said if I got there before 530 I could complete the paperwork pick it up. I rush and got there by 525. I walk in and three male staff are chatting behind the counter. I told them I was here to pick up my gun. They said they are closing and there is paperwork that needs to be completed, come back another time. I persisted telling them I was told if i got there before 530 I would be helped. The answer again was they were closing, the paperwork would take too long and to come back another time .... only this time more rudely. Summary: I spent over $1000 with this gun and related items and their staff is annoyed by my presence. Sure they want to go home, I get it, but to be rude to someone who just dropped $1000? (and more prior to that) If it were my business I would have helped the customer, however that's not the issue. Experience Number 2 I asked Range Masters facilitate an out of state FFL transfer for a custom rifle had I bought and wanted shipped to San Luis Obispo. The first time I called the staff told me "the gal who deals with our FFL transfers will be back on Monday, call back then". No problem I call back Monday and she sets up the transfer with the out of state seller. She was helpful and friendly. I call back 2 weeks later wondering if they received the rifle. I asked the guy who answered for the lady who deals with their FFL transfers, describing my prior dealing with the gal. He asked me who her name was and I couldn't recall. He says it could be anyone and was very UNhelpful in finding who she was. He wouldn't transfer me to anyone who would be able to help and he couldn't/wouldn't even find out if my shipment arrived! Here is how the exchange went, as nearly verbatim as i can remember: ME: Hi, I am checking to see if my rifle came in. I dealt with the gal who handles your FFL transfers, can you connect me with her?" RM staff: Who did you speak with? Me: I don't recall her name but she's helped me with the FFL work. It was an out of state transfer. RM staff: Well that could be anyone, (then rattles a few female names off). Me: I know it was a gal and was told previously that she is the one who handles the FFL transfers. Not sure of her name though. I just want to see if my rifle has arrived. RM: That's not true, it could be (lists two female names). Me: OK, well maybe it was Julie. I just want to see if it has arrived. RM Staff: Oh... well you will have to come in and complete the paperwork. Me: So my rifle came in then? RM staff: No...I don't know. But you need to come in and fill out the paperwork first. Me: Well can you connect me with someone so i can see if it came in yet? RM staff: (now rudely) It doesn't matter, you still need to come in and fill out the paperwork. Summary: It turns out that my rifle was delivered via UPS 12 DAYS AGO. No phone call to let me know it arrive, and NO HELP from the idiot guy on the phone who couldn't muster the effort to help me find out if it was delivered. I had to call the out of state seller to see if he had a tracking number. He did and his attitude was refreshingly helpful. Too bad this dealer is two states away, he'd have my business instead of the clowns at Range Masters. read more

The guys on the gun side of the store are great they deserve a 4 star review which I will post later, but the ladies on the uniform side, however nice and very friendly they are, they really need to get it together. I ordered a jacket with patches and 2 pair of pants from a name brand, and its been a month and a half and they "still have not arrived". I have since ordered the exact same pants from Amazon a week ago and they have arrived today. 6 days from order to delivery. I'm really disappointed in the service. I won't be getting my uniforms from them again. My gun needs are still being handled very well though. read more

I took my girlfriend to this place on a Saturday , I had never been there and am looking into buying another gun. My thinking is to review a couple of my options in the range in order to make a decision.... Horrible customer from the moment we walked in. Dirty looks like we were inconveniencing the establishment. We were constantly being looked past and had to make way to others that came in, constantly I had to make our presence known to get service. Range rules and policing were on the level of militant. Pricing in the store was not competitive and too high. Never will I go there again, nor will I recommend this place to anyone in our community. read more

I haven't used the range...I have the privilege of having other free options. The employees and owners are polite and accommodating. Why is there nothing less than one star? I am a woman who walked into this store with another wonan, apparently we vibed gay because we were met with hostile looks. We asked where the uniforms were located & told " in the uniform section"...really? Who would look there? When we got to the uniform section which was staffed by the least interested customer service representative ever. We disrupted her from eating her box of Dots & asked for a specific long sleeve polo shirt. She came back with short sleeve, non polo style. I needed to do a FFL transfer of a pistol from my uncle and went to Range Master to do it. We went in when it was not too busy and the sales guy there was the biggest JERK I may have ever run into. We were treated like low pond scum wasting his time. He made us jump through hoops telling us things like "stand in this spot until I say so" and "dont put your money on the counter until I say so" It was a control freak session with us having to smile and suck it up if we wanted to get it done. When we left my uncle who is a 70 year old seasoned firearms expert and veteran asked me if I had been there before (I had) and if there was something wrong with this place. He was in shock for an hour or so replaying crazy things they sales guy had put us through. Ok, so then 3 weeks later I go to pick up the pistol and who should be there but this same sales guy. Store had maybe two people in it, and this guy was sitting bored. I smiled and hoped it was just a bad day last time. NOPE!! He was almost as much of a jerk this time too! He took as long as he could, and made me suffer again. I got out of there and was done, never again having to go back!! I almost purchased a Beretta Inox 9mm there a few months ago and the guy then was at least professional, if not friendly. I am very glad I ended getting it elsewhere because this place is making a big mistake having this nut actually speaking to potential customers. When I didn't like the most expensive one and asked if they had any others the woman looked at me and said "well I guess I don't know what I'm talking about" and walked away. I have been going to range master for 15 years. Up until recently I haven't had any complaints except for the high cost. Today I took my 70 year old mother who has dementia with me to watch while I qualified. Although we told the range master on duty and my mom would only be watching he neglected to inform me that I would she would have to pay the 16 dollar range fee just to go in for the 10 minutes I was in there. I had to pay $32. On top of other fees they charged. Frankly...I am not planning to go back. read more

The guys working there seem really happy to be doing their job, which makes a fun experience. I had a super time being helped to get onto the range and to shop afterward. Great selection, nice, friendly place with great people. They really took care of me and I didn't feel like I had to know a lot to get a lot out of my visit.
