Ohhhhh...so THAT'S the name of this place. We always just called it "Indian Bar". Indian Bar is…read morewhere you start the night and where you end the night. You might also make a couple trips in the middle of your weekend LKF bar hopping. Why? HKD $100 for 3 shots, all night! None of that happy hour bullshit. If you can find a better deal, then I guess the next round's on me! Maharani Mess is one of those places where you know it's there, or you don't. In between two bars at street level is a narrow, fluorescent corridor. You take the rickety elevator up to the second floor and you are greeted by two options: an open door or a closed door. The closed door beckons with bright purple lights and pumping music behind it. The open one leads to a dingy, little, dark room but is owned by a man with the brightest smile. This is Maharani Mess. (The other is Geronimo, which is also a great bar, I don't play favourites). Maharani Mess, as a bar, is defined by 3 things: the tacky white sign on the door telling you it's HKD $100 for 3 shots, the tiny TV that you can take over for your own playlist, and the generous men who I can't name. All I know is that whenever you're done your drinks, one guy will magically appear and ask you if he can get anything else. Once in awhile, he throws in a free round. If you look like you're leaving, he'll be right next to you saying: "Tequila shots? On the house!" Like I said before, you either know about this place or you don't. Therefore, vacancy is just as unpredictable. Sometimes, the place is empty and we get to chill out in our little corner, screaming out that one part with lyrics in an EDM song. Other times, it's completely full. I've even seen it booked out and closed up for a "private event". Before it transforms into a watering hole, this place apparently serves real Indian food. Who knew? All I know is that once you're in, you're in good hands. You won't be leaving thirsty and when you do leave, you'll be tempted back inside with another round. You've entered boozy Nirvana. I feel sorry for the owner who obvious put their heart and pride in this establishment…read more Food was decent to good...yet the server, a lady in her 50s (maybe) was so shockingly rude that I had to (calmly) ask for another waitress. I travelled and ate out a lot and this is the first time I had to do it. The place was empty and there was only another 2 guests. When we were reading in the menu, she stood far with total indifference and didn't even fill our water. When I asked her "what is this food"? Her reply was a frowning "I cannot explain." "I don't know". Every little interaction She treated us as a headache rather than customers. Again she was not busy cause there were only other 2 guests plus two of us. Her English was adequate. Hungry and tired in Hongkong's humid summer, I felt that I either had to leave or ask for another waitress. The other waitress was polite and attentive. Being at a very international district of Hong Kong, this level of rudeness was shocking.

Away from home for quite some time and Indian (South) food called us. This is our 6th country…read morelocation where SB serves. Known for quality food and clean interiors, this location did the same as well. The interior was very clean and the service was very good. Vegan Medu Vada - this was the least liked item for us. The Medu Vada, seemed very small for SB and looked as it was made by novice rather than an experienced chef. The MVs are normally much bigger and perfectly round and equal batter all around. Just one chutney and very little sambhar didn't help. The Vegan Rava Masala Dosa was better. Nice crisp dosa overfilled with Potato and Onion masala. The three chutneys and sambhar (less qty.) was good. The mostly Vegan North Indian Thaali was good as well. The curries to the point. The curries had a South Indian touch though, which is OK. The cauliflower 65 pakora was the best and super crunchy.

The hubster got his staple at any South Indian restaurant, which was a rava masala dosa. An uttapam for the child, which seemed slightly undercooked in the center. Good chutneys, especially the tomato one, which was a bit different, more gingery (works too well for me). The idli was soft, not as white and the vada, great. And their sambhar has always been good consistency, good taste, between New York and here. Lots of more photos and details on my blogs.
