In an area so bustling with eateries, it might be hard to find Shaan if one weren't actively looking but this spot is a popular one with locals for their reasonably priced curries and bundled sets. The interior is a somewhat dingy, but not dodgy enough to keep folks away. The staff is friendly and about as local as can be (i.e. speaks very good Cantonese!). A lot of people are coming in here for takeout and bringing it home. For around $50HKD, one can rock some rice, naan, curry, and a drink. That's really cheap for HK standards and that kind of meal can keep folks happily full without balking at the price. My only issue is that the food is largely bland. My first encounter was via takeout and it was not pretty. My chicken curry lacked flavor in all aspects from the broth to the chicken itself. Another semi-point deducted for my veggie samosa, which was plentiful in potato but really mediocre otherwise. I had high hopes for the chicken tikka, but even that was somewhat subpar so it was hard to pick a standout. Second time was a family meal in house. I was excited to try it, but again the results were not good. Throughout our set meal for 4, there was nothing rave worthy but a platter of lamb / duck / and chicken curries all sitting in sauce. I think the issue with me was the food was adjusted to cater to the local palate, evidenced with the potatoes in curry and choices like brisket with complimentary lai-tong soup. These things are not bad per se, but it detracts from the kind of authentic buttons they could be pushing. I'm not sure if I'll be back, but folks should still give it a shot. It's worth noting they accept credit cards here and there is no service charge. That alone might be enough to get people through the door.

Luckily I was introduced to this place by a friend and it has been my regular curry place for the four years I have been in Hong Kong. If you are new to this place, the best thing to do is when you walk up to the entrance to Chungking and just say Taj Mahal. Their rep will then lead you to the right elevators and will usually give you a VIP card (if they don't then ask as it will give you 10% discount). If the lift takes forever, you can take the stairs as it is only on the third floor. Right, on to the food! You will be seated and given some popadoms to munch on while you look at the menu. There are so many options! If you aren't sure what to order then they can give you recommendations. Personally I love the Chicken Tikka Makhani and the Chicken Korma as I need a milder curry. Their samosas are brilliant and the tikka meat platter is delish! If you are with a group then they can also do a few deals for you with mixed curries, rice, naan, etc for a really good price. The family that runs it are super friendly and if you go a few times they will remember you. Also, order Mango Lassi! They are the best!!

"I don't know". Every little interaction She treated us as a headache rather than customers. Again she was not busy cause there were only other 2 guests plus two of us. Her English was adequate. Hungry and tired in Hongkong's humid summer, I felt that I either had to leave or ask for another waitress. The other waitress was polite and attentive. The workers there can understand both English and Cantonese, so you dont need to worry about these Indian food names if youre a local. The shop is split into two separate dining rooms, so plenty of seating. Food was very flavorful and affordable. Serving size looked small but these curries are creamy and heavy! Even the mint chutney was on the creamier end. Since the curries are heavy in spice (not spicy, but aromatic), you should consider a lassi to balance everything out. Definitely know which floor and which building block the restaurant is in, so you can skip out on all the panhandling at the entrance and along the way. The building is quite old, elevator is small and may take forever. We decided to leave via stairwell and ended up in the alleyway. Not the best place to be when the night gets dark.

While I've made a habit of bouncing around from spot to spot, one of the only places I've made multiple trips back to is Tandoori Nights, which is easily among the most underrated Indian establishments in all of Hong Kong. The space is massive for HK standards and the decor is semi-grand but in a subtle way. There are pillars, a wall statue of ganesh, and even a small stage for entertainment. Compared to the hole in the walls at nearby Chung King Mansion, this would be a big time establishment. What I've noticed is that they're either really empty on most days or completely packed with Indian only patrons (possibly Indian tourists?). They're also really big on delivery but with little reviews on just about any platform, I have a feeling this place is largely undiscovered. They're also among the only restaurants that serve a daily lunch buffet and not just any with little skimpings, but a serious spread of food ranging from various meat + veg options, along with a dedicated dosa station. The variety is not only vast with different options each day, but the food is also good if not great. It was only $88HKD for a awhile, but the price has since gone up to $100HKD even. I haven't had a bad choice yet. Their salad options are fresh and the chutneys are light without being overly sour / sweet. They have fresh fruits also available such as canteloupe, watermelons, and papaya, along with a dessert of the day. Buffet versions of samosas are typically dry and unappealing, but their version is crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside. They've done a remarkable job with their meat tikkas (be it fish or chicken), by keeping it soft and tender. The literally fill the bottom with naan bread, onions, and generous coatings of cilantro to keep the aromatics and moisture intact. Brilliant. Their curries and veggie options are outstanding. The palak paneer has plump chunks of paneer cheese swimming in a very rich sea of palak spinach. Chana masala has always been a favorite of mine and the chick peas are perfectly cooked. I even enjoy smothering my pullao with their daal, which is not something I've ever really indulged in any Indian buffet setting but I'll happily do so here. I can't pick a favorite from their awesome array of curries. Their version of goan fish curry is super tasty but I also really enjoy their original chicken curry for its well seasoned, clean after taste. Butter chicken will have any Indian food newbies doing a palate dance, but I'd be hard pressed to ignore their lamb vindaloo, which was spicy but superb on every level. There isn't a lot of room for curry for anyone's stomach, so there is a true battle of trying to maximize my time here when I'm in feast mode. Their dinner service is a slightly different feel -- the ambiance is intimate and sometimes there might be a band playing some traditional music in the background. The a la carte menu is equally fantastic, though the portions are smaller (naturally) and the bill does add up. Most importantly, folks are getting a quality Indian food experience in a place that doesn't see much traffic due to its hidden nature. That in itself makes Tandoori Nights one of the more exceptional spots for indulging in Indian fare.

Yes, not a typo, this Indian restaurant is located inside the Queen Street Cooked Food Market. You will find the escalators across from the 7-11 on the corner of Ko Shing Street to take you up to the dai pai dong. The manager/head guy (might be an owner, not sure) has the nicest friendliest face. He is Nepalese. His nephew was working as a waiter that night. Keep'n it real in the family. Service was friendly, simple, quick. Not forging new ground on customer service here, but staff seemed happy we were there. NAAN! I might have the cheese naan bread from Chautari on final meal list if I knew I were going to die tomorrow. It is that cheesy, piping hot, buttery and delicious. But in addition to my addiction to carbs via naan bread, we enjoyed basmatti rice, fish curry and saagwala paneer (spinach and cheese...love any culture to includes cheese in any dish!)
