Last night was the fourth time I had been to Himalaya, a Nepalese and Indian restaurant in the…read moreheart of Wan Chai and I can confirmed is one of my favorite places in Wan Chai. I have always been there for dinner, but they also have lunch time buffet (for 90 HKD!) which is probably the best value for money you can get around this area. The place isn't really fancy; it's a wide open space with a ton of tables - pick the ones close to the window; they don't have tables for two. In fact, they're big enough to accommodate for 5 people and, what's more important, for the procession of dishes that you may end up ordering. They have a delivery menu that you can check online and a la carte menu, which is the one I know, and I can almost recite from memory. From what I've tried I would highly recommend any of their chicken dishes (especially Makhani, Korma or Vindaloo). They normally come as mildly spicy and you should ask them to spice your dish up or down. The chicken meat always comes very tender and flavorsome (I haven't experienced the same thing with mutton for example). As a starter, you can't miss the Saag Paneer. It may be a little pricey for an appetizer or side dish (around 70 HKD) but it is absolutely worth it. It's the best one I've tried so far. A dinner for two can cost around 250 HKD, service charge included (but not drinks) which is a pretty good deal!

Yet still HK Style Cafes, McDonalds and other infamous street side eateries to maintain their stronghold for the hungry locals wandering during the wee hours. New Istanbul is a 24 hour spot, specializing in Mediterranean, Middle Eastern fare and certified Halal. It is mainly empty at this spot, for obvious reasons to anyone who dines here. The menu is massive for HK standards, perhaps even for Turkish / Halal places in general. Their meat platters from their rotating spits are definitely plentiful, typically served with rice, salads, and fries. Their chicken doner ($70) was just chunks of dry pieces that resembled shawarma. The Kofte ($88) was filling, but I've definitely had better in from other establishments and the same applies with the Mixed Doner ($98), which was just disappointing. I figured going with light bites such as Falafel ($58) and Spicy Hummus ($48) would resetore some faith in misaligned execution but I was wrong. Both were downright atrocious. There was a pool of oil drowning the hummus and the falafel was overfried, resembling a hockey puck. I was also surprised at the subpar pizza, also the pide and lahmacun. I still haven't found anything suitable on the menu yet. Perhaps their desserts? (i.e. sutlac?) They do take credit cards here and the mainly Nepalese staff is super friendly. Where the food fails, they shine. But that's the only reason I can muster 2 stars.

The restaurant is extremely large, covering two floors of the Galleria. Most of the tables are placed along the floor to ceiling windows, and offer amazing views across Hong Kong. They have a generous terrace with dining tables, and the same amazing views. For the parents, there is a kids area, but no changing facilities in the gents toilets, only in the ladies. However, in the gents we do get a bathroom attendant, a dear old fellow who is generous with the paper towels. The food is pretty good. The menu is rather eclectic, covering Western, Indian, Japanese, American, Italian, and local seafood. There isn't a great deal in each section, but enough to choose from. I had a rack of ribs that was large, tasty and quite reasonable at HKD238. The burger was around HKD170 and very tasty and well prepped. Other highlights were the dosa (Indian pancake), and the moules marniere, which was mistaken a number of times for margarita pizza. On the topic of service, the staff were friendly and courteous, but not the best at understanding, especially given that we were in such a tourist hotspot. The service was a little bit slow as well, it seemed that only designated people could do designated things, so if you asked the incorrect person to order, they would have to find the right person, you get the idea. However, they were like hawks when it came to fixing problems. We ordered some fries for a kids meal, but they came a bit over salted. Just as we were discussing whether or not to send them back, the waiter was already there offering to replace them with his apologies. That's the way I like it! I thoroughly recommend Cafe Deco, the food is not the absolute best ever, but really very satisfying. The venue is large and spacious, has amazing views, and after your meal, there is a lobby area where you can enjoy coffee or digestifs.

Vegetarian is available, and certificates of halal approval adorn the tiny walls. Tiny walls, tiny tables and tiny sheeshah too... during summer this is a great place to chill and snack after local exploration while waiting for the ferry home. For us as locals: it's a source of spicy and delicious salads at lunchtime and dinner. The salads are basically the fillings of kebabs turned out into a takeaway container: without the pita bread.
