We unexpectedly came here for a bite when the Indian spot around the corner was closed to celebrate Diwali. Holidays happen! Loved it! Small, clean, hospitable and friendly (all the staff seemed to like each other and you could tell! - kind of a nice twist!), menu in English, food hot, fresh and full of flavor. This spot shares a similar name as another restaurant in Wan Chai, but upon asking our waiter, they are not related at all. This place is a solo operation. It is not fancy and is a touch short of being called a "hole in the wall," so keep your expectations in check. The tomato juice with lemon was a tasty beverage to accompany my lunch.

Good vegetarian food under $50 HK dollars. Almost close to fast food in that they get your order out within 10 minutes of ordering. I had a rice plate with mushrooms. The portion is not huge where you struggle to finish your food. The steam buns with vegetables needed soy sauce for flavouring. Owner spoke English well with a British accent. The place is small so you will be expected share a table with other customers if needed.

The sweet and sour "pork" was a hit for my group. So was the vegetarian sashimi platter, where we all tried to figure out what the mock meat was made of. The "jellyfish" was also really good, and it was interesting that it was in a peanut-flavored sauce. I can't really comment on service other than it seemed quick. There was never a long waiting period in between dishes. I was on vacation with my boyfriend's family, and I don't speak any Cantonese, so they took care of the communication part. I did see an Indian family while we were there, so I'm sure communication should be fine if you don't speak Cantonese. This meal was towards the end of our stay in HK and it's a good meal to cleanse your body. Afterwards, you can walk the strip on Nathan Road and go shopping - walk off your meal!

If you think Hong Kong is a good vegetarian city because it's so diverse -- not completely true if…read moreyou want to get non-Western food. I think the trap is that dishes can *sound* vegetarian, but almost all common broths and sauces contains non-vegetarian items in it. Whenever I go vegetarian, I have a hard time finding more than one item on the menu at any cha chaan teng, because I know what actually goes in it. Which is what makes these sorts of vegetarian restaurants popular. Chinese vegetarian is not just "no killing of animals". They adhere to buddhist vegetarian habits, and don't use certain pungent vegetables like onions, garlic or chives in their cooking. That said, they are also somehow ok with making vegetables look and taste like meat. Gluten puffs that is chewy like a piece of stewed chicken? Sure! Soy protein packed together and sliced like ham? Why not. That is the sort of food you will get here -- vegetarian versions of popular pan-Chinese dishes, with the protein replaced by various plant-items ranging from the innocuous (tofu) to the there's-no-way-this-is-organic. Every bite brought me such surprise, because they do resemble the original dishes -- but it also makes me think, why? Are we not worthy to have vegetarian dishes that celebrate the vegetables on their own merit? That said, if you want some Chinese dishes but don't eat meat, this isn't bad and have a lot more variety of vegetarian dishes than other Chinese places. It also isn't bad for a good karma meal on Buddha's birthday. It just isn't something I actively look forward to.

Though the restaurant calls itself vegetarian, most of the dishes here are not purely plant-based, with the majority containing egg and dairy. You WILL have a hard time finding the ideal food if you come here for a plant-based/vegan meal--there's just too much animal product. Aside from the ingredients, the taste of each dish fails to hold up to the regular vegetarian or Shanghainese food standard. They are either too sweet or salty, and even suspicious of using low quality MSG. I feel ill and dry right after the meal. The service is also the worst you can expect. We arrived at the reception but were greeted by no one, waiting for the receptionist to finish a long call. We were led into the dining area and were seated at an extremely noisy table near the kitchen where the servers organize the utensils. They seem to have a problem with anyone who doesn't speak Cantonese and really don't care if their own expression or demeanor will bother the customers. And the price is deceptive and very high. There is no hint on the menu of any service surcharge, and they mandatorily charge you 10% of the total on the bill, without informing you in anyway. They give you free-looking appetizer when seating you and charge you in the end. The black tea I had tasted moldy. Also, the price of rice here is a shocking $26 HKD per bowl in the Hong Kong-China area where most of the rice as a carb complement costs, at the very most, $10 HKD per bowl. We a party of 2 spent $52 HKD on the rice alone and were not told about the price when it was asked for. In the end, the view from the restaurant was not the expected harbour skyline but the back of the roof of a museum facing the harbour. With the malfunctioning AC, it's an unsightly and cold experience just sitting there. Again, I do NOT recommend literally anyone this restaurant.

Hot and sour soup in particular holds up well, but the dumplings came out cold at least once (I think we ordered them three times?!), and the dan dan mein both took forever to come and felt kind of limp in execution-- noodles were too soft and the dish itself was missing the proper blend of spice/heat of a good dan dan mein. The service is a little variable, it was quite good most of the meal, but a little inconsistent in spots. And the decor, while once nice, now feels a little basic, a little dated.

Like many veg restaurants in Hong Kong, their menu reads very alike a regular restaurant, substituting any meat ingredient with a veg version. So, you get salmon, tuna, soft shelled crab, chicken, abalone, and many other things that don't sound vegetarian. When my salmon rose roll came in, I looked and looked. Even on close examination, it looks like the real thing, from the color to the texture to the white lines of fat. An amazing feat of food processing technology. So does it taste like the real thing? I always maintain that people who says that when a vegan says that the vegan cheese/ham/sausage tastes like the real thing, it's just because she has forgotten what the real thing tastes like. Short answer, no, it doesn't taste like the real thing, but it is not unpleasant either. Unlike some cardboard-like vegan, gluten free stuff that is barely palatable. I would order it again, but probably just as plain nigiri. The roll has too much mayo, and the truffle do not add much to taste. Soft shell crab is made by frying rolled up seaweed in tempura batter, which I prefer as it's more natural. They have other more traditional Chinese vegetarian dishes too, if veg sushi is not your thing.

Perfect for the vegetarians in Hong Kong. The menu is jacked with hearty curries and tasty stir-fries. I would totally make this my regular if I didn't live so far away and poor. To be honest, the price is pretty decent. The shop is run by Thai people so you're in good hands. It's the perfect place to unwind from a busy city in Hong Kong, as they don't rush you out the door when you finish. One thing to note though is that some dishes originally have meat in them, but they use a soy substitute. Tom Gai Gai, for example, is just lacking that flavor so I'd avoid ordering a chicken dish (no chicken) and expect it to taste like chicken. If that makes any sense.

Chinese vegetarian restaurants often focus on one type of meat substitute, but the dishes here have a wide mix of veg alongside the vegetarian duck, scallops or whatever. The only thing I dislike are the drinks, as the water here has a slightly strange aftertaste. Note that this is a small, hole-in-the-wall type place; it would be pushed to fit twenty, and the tables spill out onto the street. I usually don't wait long for a seat but at peak times there can be a queue. They do do takeaway, but might not accept orders if it's a very busy evening.

Actually, this type of restaurants has been in existence in Hong Kong or China for hundreds of years if not more, it has a religious connection to most of these establishments as they usually are connected to a Temple or a Monastery that are either Buddhist or Taoist. Veggie Palace is categorized as a "private home kitchen" as it is officially not open to the public, all patrons has to reserve and will be contacted by them to go through menu selection. Prices are fixed, Lunch - HK$188.00 / Dinner - HK$268.00 per person Menu items are Omakase Style - as the Chef will decide what is best of the season and also according to personal taste. They will even keep a record of your past visits to make sure that the menu items you had perviously will not be repeated! Highlight items: Assorted Cold Appetizer as you can see from my photo, this has a variety of items, the centre is a mixed salad with julianne of cucumber, mushrooms, black fungus, and pomelo, it is then surrounded by veggie maki sushi roll, thousand year eggs, veggie ham etc. It is served with a light soy & vinegar based dressing, amazingly refreshing and tasty, I believe it is a signature starter that each table will get! And I am sure it will be requested even if they do not offer it in your next visit! The Mushroom & Vegetables Gyoza in Pumpkin Purée, savoury pumpkin surrounds this small package of amazing umami, the natural sweetness of the vegetables are brought to a new hight with the deep flavours of the mushrooms!
