Dear Hiring Manager at Desires Art Store, I've walked past your window a dozen times--always…read morepausing at that charcoal sketch of the woman mid-laugh, the one where her eyes look like they know exactly what I'm hiding. It's the kind of piece that doesn't sell itself; it just... stays. And honestly? That's why I'm writing. I've spent the last three years behind the counter at a tiny gallery in Portland--nothing fancy, just good light and people who'd rather talk about brushstrokes than buy anything. I learned how to spot the quiet ones who come in for just a look, then leave with a $400 watercolor because I asked if they'd ever painted their own shadow. I'm not pushy. I'm patient. And I remember names--like how Mrs. Alvarez always wants the softest pastels, or how the kid in the hoodie keeps circling the same neon print until he finally asks if we do layaway. Desires feels different. Not louder--just deeper. I've seen your Instagram; the way you frame a single canvas like it's breathing. You don't just sell art--you curate moments. I want to be part of that. I'm good with inventory (I once reorganized our entire back room by mood--warm tones on the left, cold on the right--sales jumped fifteen percent). I can wrap a piece like it's a gift to someone's future self. And yeah, I'll admit--I've already daydreamed about restocking your shelves at six in the morning, radio low, coffee black, watching the city wake up through the glass. If you're looking for someone who'll treat every customer like they're about to fall in love--with a painting, with themselves, with whatever--they'll find here--I'm your guy. Let me know if you ever need an extra pair of hands. Or eyes. Or just someone who'll stay late to hang that last piece right. Warmly, Leo P.S.

Stopped in here to take a look at drapery fabrics after having a tough time finding anything I…read moreliked at a few other great fabric stores (i.e. King Textiles, etc). MacFab moved here from Queen West a short while back and fits right into the trendy (but certainly more quiet) Leslieville 'hood. This place can be very intimidating but I had an easy time with Becks helping me traverse the endless books of samples at a lower price range. Shear fabrics are typically cheaper than drapes, which can vary in cost from around $35-$90+ per yard (thankfully only 1-yard minimum per order for those which must be custom-ordered). Beautiful, high-quality fabrics! BUT they're very expensive once you do the math. You'll get quality for the price (UV protected, high-traffic stain protection, etc), but jeez it's a punch in the wallet for sure. I appreciated the excellent and attentive service, with no bullying or pressure to buy. I wound up "renting" a book to take home and see in my space - easy with just a credit slip copy made and returned once you bring back the book, at no cost. While some of these prices are comparabl(ish) to Designer Fabrics in Parkdale, I'd say their selection at MacFab is a bit more youthful and up-to-date. Can't wait to go nuts here once I'm a millionaire! Tip! They've also got a home store on the North side of the street just a few steps West. Haven't been in, but I believe its more finished pieces/home decor items as opposed to fabrics.

That said, I love to finger my way down the aisles -- touching the rich beautiful silk, then moving my way into the suede, and finally into the leather. They have rolls of funky, classic, and just plain exquisite fabrics. I really enjoy my tour of this place -- and of course there is no entry fee.

Went here for my boyfriend for a date night and had a great time!…read more The store is really fun and had a huge selection of paintable ceramics from plates to massive lighthouses. We settled on a piggy bank for me and a "kitchen creature" (an animal that holds a sponge) that my boyfriend turned into a plant pot. There were some kiddos in the room which makes sense, but it was still a nice date spot. The woman helping us was very kind and helpful and gave us the whole run down. Ended up paying about 60 dollars for the two of us which is kinda pricy but worth it for the unique experience of making something of our own without having to start from scratch. Over all a fun place to stretch your creative muscle no matter the age or occasion :)

We got there pretty late (turns out just an hour isn't enough!) and they let us come in at a later date to finish our work, with no additional fees. There's additional space downstairs, but I didn't check it out. The employees are quite friendly, though our experience was entirely self-directed. There are plenty of people chatting while crafting; there are quite a few university students, probably due to the student discount. We ended up painting and firing three pieces. Sadly, one piece got chipped after firing. They did refire it, but we had to come back another time to pick it up. There's a pretty wide selection of ceramics, with a few "specialty" pieces, but it's worth noting they're Made in China designs, if you care about that sort of thing. Overall I would probably go back, with a bit more time in mind - there are plenty of great restaurants in the area to decompress, too!
