I honestly don't understand all the bad reviews about Golden State orthopedics…read more I came in today for the first time. I had an appointment to see Dr. Nathaniel Cohen at 1:45 pm. I showed up 1/2 hour early to fill out the paperwork and was greeted right away by one of the 3 receptionist. The receptionist also helped helped me fill out the paperwork as I had some questions. WHAT WAS GREAT ABOUT THE VISIT #1. My appointment was for 1:45 and they called me in to see the doctor right at 1:45 "no wait. "And there was like 20 people in the waiting room" #2. The doctors assistant asked me why I was there and took notes while listening intently. #3. About 15 minutes later Doctor Cohan came in after reviewing my MRI cd, the 4 page MRI write up and looking up information about my case in doctors journals as it is unusual. He then asked me to describe my pain level, what happened, what I was feeling etc,etc. He asked me questions like who is the surgeon who made the recommendation for surgery and was perplexed by what I told him because for the most part surgery is not possible. When I told him the surgeons name who made the recommendations Dr. Cohan became even more perplexed as the surgeon is a very well known and knowledgeable surgeon in the medical community. So he asked me more questions and even called the surgeon to speak with him and "unfortunately the surgeon was out of the office" try to get to the bottom of the confusion. After Dr. Cohan examined me and we spoke more, he was able to ascertain why he believed that the surgeon was recommending surgery for me and believed that if he is correct then he would also recommend getting the surgery. What struck me about Dr. Cohan was that after he had looked at the results of the MRI's and talking with me; he was not sure of a proper course of action and that he told me that he did not know everything. "Now to me this is a sign of a great doctor who is also humble" (instead of coming to a conclusion and possibly giving me misinformation, (like my GP) he chose to say I don't know!, now that's a good doctor!!!) He told me to make another appointment with the surgeon and wrote down for me what to ask him specifically. He then said that if the surgeon confirmed what Dr. Cohan told me to ask him, that I should have the surgery performed. (Here is an Orthopedic surgeon telling me that the other surgeon is more capable to perform this specific surgery... I mean wow!) All I got to say is Dr. Cohan obviously cares about his patients!!! Dr. Cohan, you are the best!! Thank you for your kindness, bedside manner, honesty, compassion and concern for your patients. #4. He even gave me a referral to another GP!! And told me to call him if I had other questions about anything. 5 stars is an understatement! Everything about this office is 5 stars including the receptionist. Again I really don't understand the bad reviews.

I don't know if others experienced this but the only separate response I received was to collect a few more dollars (that had already been paid). I reached out at least a 1/2 dozen times asking for a call from the Dr regarding my diagnosis but still don't have a response. If I were an insurance company, I would look into these practices and see if they are even providing the services they are billing for.

On July 18, 2026, my mother had a hip pinning surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital . Looking at the…read moreX-ray taken after the surgery by Dr. Peter Kim indicated that the surgery was performed successfully, with care and precision. However, ultimately, the post-operative care of Dr. Kim has caused far more harm than good in my mother's recovery process. After her transfer to a rehabilitation hospital, we learned that the post-operative order left by our surgeon were confusing and even contradictory, stating that she should be doing both "50/50" and "toe touch." Since the physical therapist was confused by his instructions, they attempted to contact the surgeon to gain further clarification. The physical therapist also asked me to also follow up with the surgeon, noting that at times they can be more responsive to the patient's concerns. I called the surgeon's office three times and, after four days of waiting, finally received a phone call from an office assistant. She said that the order was for 50/50 and the toe touch was wrong. I asked her to call the rehabilitation hospital to communicate these instructions to our physical therapist. The assistant replied that the rehabilitation hospital might not answer as it was 5 pm but I asked her to please leave a message and I gave her our physical therapist's name. To this day, I do not know whether a phone call was made or not. I tried to relay the information myself in an email to the rehab hospital. As the result of this information, my mother's therapy changed to walking rehab while experiencing excruciating pain. She had been experiencing great pain even while seated on the wheelchair for any period of time. On the morning of Thursday July 30th, we were informed that she had an appointment at 11:15 with the surgeon. She was to be taken to the surgeon's office with a wheelchair transport. I had never heard that a patient after surgery must be taken to the surgeon's office. I assumed that the surgeon would come to the patient. The ride -- though secure -- was difficult and painful for her. When we arrived at the surgeon's office, our appointment was 15 minutes late. Finally, once the appointment began, I handed the comprehensive report on my mother's surgery and rehabilitation (sent with us from the rehab hospital) but the assistant did not even look at the document. He then proceeded to ask us very basic questions making it evident that he did not know that there was any surgery performed, what type of surgery. In an off-handed way, he asked whether my mother was experiencing pain and when she answered that she had been and continues to be in extreme pain, he was surprised. His surprise was shocking to us given that she had been sitting in the wheelchair for almost an hour at this point and was not at a place in her recovery to sit comfortably for extended periods of time. He then said that he needed to remove the sutures from her leg. Astonished, I looked at the wooden, fixed-position examination bed situated in the room. The bed was 36 inches high with a small footstool next to it to allow the patient to climb atop it. I told him that my mother could not stand and climb atop that bed in her current condition. He said he would remove the stitches while she was seated on the wheelchair. I explained that she needed assistance to stand up to take off the pants in order to sit back down on the wheelchair for the suture removal. I also stated that her adult diaper needed to be opened to reach the sutures. The assistant looked shocked. He did not help to get her up and watched as my mother and I struggled to get her standing to pull down the pants. After checking the sutures, he left the room and came back with the surgeon. The surgeon arrived and looking at the sutures said to us, "you didn't need to come in for this, the nurses at the rehabilitation hospital could have removed them. They can stay in for another two weeks." I asked him if he had visited my mother since the surgery and he said no. So, it had been 13 days since her surgery and he had not ever visited with the patient. This means that the surgery rounds at the hospital were never made. I asked him about the about the accommodations offered for patients and he said if you wanted her to be laying down then you should have arrived on a gurney. I replied that I was not aware that a surgeon's office would not have accommodations available for patients. Overall, I'm writing this to inform others about the mistreatment that my mother received at Golden State Orthopedics and Spine by Dr. Paul Kim. Unfortunately, as a result of Dr. Kim's and his assistant's negligence in conveying incorrect information, my mother's recovery and rehabilitation has been set back quite a bit, causing her excess and unnecessary pain. I hope that by sharing our story, we can advocate for better treatment of my mother and other patients like her.

The MRI report wasn't accurate and didn't rotate 2 torn ligaments, it only rotated 1 torn ligament and 2 breaks 1 by my knee the other at my ankle. I went to a podiatrist, who continually told me it would heal. He was however concerned about the break at me knee and wanted me to see an orthopedic. I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Kim. I had 1 more podiatrist appointment scheduled before seeing Dr. Kim, when he asked if I'd made the orthopedic appointment I confirmed and told him the date, he asked who the Dr was. He didn't look happy. He asked me to step on the floor xray machine. I told him no way, cant do that. He got stern, said there's been plenty of healing time, this was end of June. I stepped onto the xray machine and SCREAMED so loud, the pain excruciating. He proceeded to tell me I was having a "mental" reaction to pain that really wasnt there! Dr Kim noticed on my MRI CD that there were 2 torn ligaments not just 1. Surgery was scheduled ASAP. BEST CARE EVER! Dr. Kim's entire staff was incredibly helpful, caring and ON IT! 1 year later and Im doing great, only negative I have is that cold weather aches. Ill take it! My review concerns the practice, not the surgery itself, which went very well. Since my operation, I've tried many times to contact the Dr or his PA through leaving messages with the office and asking my questions on the Patient Portal. No one has ever responded to my questions regarding medication or physical therapy or any of the other issues post-surgery. I have never had this kind of customer care from any other doctors.

We feel very unfortunate that we found him and he was able to work with us.

I wanted the appointment changed due to me working 24/7 while on these work trips, but if they absolutely could not change it, then i would take it from chicago, not an issue. The lady starts yelling at me over the phone telling me the call is recorded and that I am not allowed to take the call from chicago (while i reside in ca). I thought this was really unprofessional. She told me next availability is 4 months from today. She also told me they TRACK WHERE I AM DURING THESE VIDEO VISITS. I thought this was so inappropriate. Isn't this a VIOLATION of my privacy??? She then transferred me to my doctors office. My doctor told me she can see me on Thursday with no issues while I take the call before my work trip.

I saw Dr. Jeffrey Kanel in 2019 for a broken arm. Two things you should know before having him as…read moreyour doctor. First, he does not give you his time. Every single visit was the same: 30 minutes in the waiting room for barely two minutes with him. He was visibly impatient, and I never got the chance to properly ask about my own recovery. It felt like being processed, not treated. Second, and the reason I'm writing this years later: at one visit he walked in and, completely out of nowhere, asked me if I'd heard the news about Huawei, and he asked me "You don't work for them right?" as a joke. I was there for a broken arm. I'm Chinese. That was, as far as I can tell, the entire basis for the question. Even years later, the way he treated his patients has stuck with me - that's I'm writing this so fewer people have to experience it :)

This was one of the most frustrating medical experiences I've ever had. After her wrist suddenly swelled and we ended up in the ER, I called this office three times to make sure they knew what had happened. At the follow-up visit, I personally told the PA everything, watched him type it into her chart, and assumed the doctor would actually review it. Instead, Dr. Kanel came in, commented on the CT scans, and immediately started to leave the room. When I asked about the ER complication, he told me he "didn't know" about the swelling. Then, realizing it should have been known, he quickly brushed it off as "normal" and told us to come back in a few days if it didn't get better. The dismissiveness was unbelievable. We went elsewhere for a second opinion, and the new orthopedist immediately pointed out things we should have been told months ago. Because that information was never shared with us here, our daughter now has to spend the foreseeable future in a wrist brace to prevent further damage. The lack of communication, lack of awareness of her chart, and lack of basic follow-through at this office were unacceptable. I would absolutely not return and cannot recommend this provider to anyone.

Absolutely fantastic care. Healthcare is strange. I think many doctors are burned out by the…read morepaperwork and amount of people who need help and that while there are some absolutes it's all something in progress. It's not like an off on switch, your ankle/knee/back is unhealthy and you magically get better. The reality is that the best doctors listen and do their best to help you improve. I've had a complex set of issues that have exacerbate each other and Dr Vaughn is the second specialist I've gone to specifically for my knee. He listened and while I am not magically all better he gave me the feedback about what I could/should do and didn't try to sell me something. Instead, he did the examination and then recommended the MRI because the bones look fine but the soft stuff isn't visible in an xray (the first specialist told me age and arthritis and recommended a shot that only made things worse). I'm expecting at best that I'll know whether there is something that needs to be repaired but at worst I'll at least discover enough to help me improving my mobility and management of pain. I feel that Dr Vaughn is the best kind of doctor for me, someone who listens and cares to help figure it out, educational about the limits that I must set and encouraging.
