I've driven by numerous times and seen the long drive thru lines and parking lot packed, knowing it must be good. I got there, and it wasn't busy at the time post lunch rush, probably. My next review takes me to a Hot Dog stand that has been around for decades. This place boasts fresh cut fries and snappy hot dogs. This place is Rand Red Hots in Des Plaines. Rand Red Hots sticks out like a sore thumb when you drive down Rand Road. The building is fashioned to look like an old school diner straight out of the movie "Grease". The menu is pretty straightforward. It has Chicago style hot dogs, char-dogs, Maxwell Street Polish, Supreme Tamales,hand-cut fries, and of course shakes. Every single person from Illinois, especially the Chicagoland area, bases their hot dogs against the world famous Gene and Judes hot dogs. With that being said, Rand Red Hot definitely has some things going for it over Gene and Judes. The first stand-out they have is a drive up window. There is no long line that you need to stand in; you can simply wait in your car for your order. The other stand out with Rand Red Hots is that their hand-cut fries, in my personal opinion, are the best out of any hot dog joint in the Chicagoland area. They are crispy and not soggy. They taste fresh and not old like they have been sitting in old oil. They are absolutely delicious. The other stand out from Rand Red Hot is their Maxwell Street Polish. In my opinion, this is better than their hot dog. The Polish is juicy, topped with grilled onions and mustard. It is absolutely fantastic. The hot dog here is no slouch. It is definitely delicious, probably in my top five hot dogs in the Chicagoland area. The hot dog had a good snap and all of the toppings tasted fresh. There was only one item on the menu that I did not care for. I did not like the char-dog. I understand the dog is supposed to be chared on a grill, but mine was absolutely obliterated. It was way too tough. It was not enjoyable to eat. This is definitely a stop you need to make if you enjoy Maxwell Street Polish sandwiches and delicious fries. The shakes are also fantastic. Definitely stop here for my order, which is a Maxwell Street Polish and fries. It is also a good thing the fries come with every order. I give a rating of 8.5 out of 10 to Rand Red Hots. For at least 5 years I have been a regular customer of this establishment, and love their food and service. Today, I came through the drive-through to get a hotdog and when I got home to eat it, discovered the casing was not quite done. Whenever I have errands to run in the Rand Road area, I usually stop here for hot dogs. The place has always been clean when I've been here and the food is tasty. Obviously this place has a very limited menu, similar to Gene & Jude's in River Grove, but in my humble opinion, the hot dogs here are much better here. I see that some of the negative Yelp reviews have to do with this place accepting cash only, no credit cards. These folks make a damn fine hot dog, probably the best I've had in this quadrant of the suburbs. I wish that they used poppyseed buns and didn't smoosh the dogs so much when wrapping them up, but they taste fantastic nonetheless. Perhaps the limited menu helps: they sell only hot dogs, polishes, tamales, fries, and ice cream. The polish is decent, the hand-cut fries pretty good (though always undersalted). Milkshakes are very nice as well, a chocolate malt so smooth that I suspected that it was from a machine; however, they claim to make them with real ice cream, so I'll believe it. The prices are great actually, considering that each sandwich comes with fries--a reasonable amount, mind you...enough to satisfy but not so many that you hate yourself for finishing all of them. Hot dog + fries sells for $3.29! This is a really cheap lunch. They have a small selection of items, but do a good business. Holy smokes if had only known. Yesterday Joey Chestnut set a record of 72, that's right 72 hot dogs in 10 minutes @ the Coney Island event. I saw the video of him choking down the last few dogs and I do mean choking them down. Rand Red Hots is one of the best hot dogs in NW burbs. 1950's Happy Days feel to it. I am a Gene n Judes fan and Portillos fan but this dog is my favorite. I had the double char dog with fries which was delicious. I probably could have had 2 because the dogs are regular vienna beef size. The only downer is cash only and no pickles. Their prices are good too. For 2 double dogs with fries and a tamale was $12. They were out of frozen bananas too but I will always return! read more

The Hubby & I were not able to visit in some time. Rand Red Hots still has delicious old school food! I miss places like this! Hubby had the hot dog with fries & I had the bunch of mini tamales & ordered a bag of very fresh cut fries. Great food! Our almost 2 yr. old grandson loves fries & we bought the leftover fries to him & our daughter at their apt. The fries were still great even heated up a bit. It is getting hard to find good places like this to eat at. Most places have frozen fries that are not very good. I am thrilled they still have fresh cut fries! We ate in our car. I always bring a bottle of ketchup as I like alot of it! To us the prices are very fair for the amount you get. Cute old school place inside & out! Friendly service too. This was not a great of hotdog. I order two Chicago style hotdogs but what I got where not real Chicago Dogs 1:) it's was chewy 2:) not a steamed poppyseed seed bun and missing tomatoes and celery salt. They bun was a-little stale and the fries would have been saving grace but had absolutely no flavor nor a gain of salt at all. Best part was the coke but they didn't make that coke did they. Price was high $10.96 which would have been ok if food was good. Maybe I caught them on a off day but nothing call me back anytime soon. read more

I have been very disappointed with this hotdog place. You know the saying you pay for what you get well that's really true here. Hotdogs might be Vienna, but they are very, very very skinny and their flavor is terribly off. The skin is too tough and has a bad snap. The color is not right either what type of a hotdog place doesn't serve pickles run is over steam, which means was probably very stale. Very disappointing.
