While out shopping, me and my daughter was looking for a quick lunch. I always wanted to try Rand's since our favorite go-to hot dog stand is in the city, abs wasn't up for the drive. I was happy that we stopped. It's a solid hot dog and polish stand. Me and my daughter ordered grilled polishes with onions and they were fresh, hot, and came with fries that are fresh cut. I enjoyed their fries better than my favorite go-to as they tasted really good and slighty crisp. My daughter also ordered a tamale and thought it was good, too. They only take cash and charge a 3% fee if you use a credit card. When we pulled up to the window and paid with $100 bill they said they couldn't take it cause it was an old bill. I love a good Chicago style dog, and this place does it right. One of my all time favorite dogs is Gene and Jude's and they are as good of not better. They keep it simple with dogs and fresh cut fries, and tamales just like G and J's, but they also have Polish and a char-dog. Also, they offer ketchup for your fries! Don't get me wrong ketchup on a hotdog is sacrilegious, but I like it on fries and don't want to publicly shamed because of it. I am also a sucker for fries wrapped up with the dog. There's nothing like that bite of the dog with a few of those salty, greasy, amazingly cooked fries jammed in there too. The feeling of the old school drive-in is also an awesome throw back and just adds to the experience. There's not a ton of indoor seating, mostly counter space, but there's a ton of outdoor space, so as long as the weather is decent you're good. It's good simple food done well. Solid for this type of hot dog. It's not a traditional Chicago dog, more like a Gene and Jude's with just mustard, onion, relish and peppers. The ONE thing I'd love to see is the offering of an additional dog WITHOUT the fries. I have asked before and was told no. They said I could order two dogs with fries and just throw the extra fries away. No kidding - like I didn't know I could do that. I just thought I'd rather pay a little less for just a second dog and NOT waste food I'm not going to eat - kind of like a win-win. Such a treat!! We had Rand Red Hots for a late night snack at my daughter's wedding..... dogs w/ fresh cut fries. They were devoured faster than I've ever seen people eat food. Jimmy's and G&J's... watch out!!! They were sooo accommodating, AND they delivered. We got 150 dogs quick, and hot, and delicious. First for some education- they have Chicago Depression Dogs. They are not the "official" "Chicago Hot Dogs" but the Depression Dog category is just as legit- it is just different. (Look it up on the Almighty Internet.) The person who paid $7.00 for a dog and a drink either is not remembering right or someone goofed with the money somewhere. For us food for 2 means about $10.00. You USED to be able to get real Vienna casings dogs at Jewel, but now you have to go to the Vienna store. Believe me I know- I have been in mourning for 5 years or so. These are the hot dogs baby boomers grew up with in Chicago. Like them or hate them, this is what they are. (and... I LOVE them.) The dogs and fries are right on par with Gene and Jude's. Really. My wife would rate Rand fries a bit higher, but that would be splitting hairs. Yes they are greasy, but that is the mark of a Chicago Fresh Cut fry. Beyond G&J they have Maxwell Street Polish Sausages or Polish with the "everything hot dog trimmings. They also have shakes. Have not tried their tamales or tamales in a bun yet. They also have a drive thru window which is a non-trivial advantage in the year of Covid19. Their parking is a little sparse/ hard to navigage compared to G&J but is generally not as crowded so that might even out. All and all we have been there 3 times and each time we left full and happy. Will still go to Gene and Jude's after the epidemic is over, but will switch off with Rand's just for a different drive. Kind of like finding the Hot Dogs at BOTH ends of the rainbow! Yum! read more
