The vibe has shifted to the front of the house, from the small eclectic side door grocery vibe and to be fair I loved eating amongst the grocery items. The shift to the front for dining is welcoming and staff now waits on the patrons with a wider menu and now margaritas and beer. Me and my dad really like this place! The food is super good, the service is great, and the prices are fair. With so many mexican restaurants in town, this is one of the less popular/busy but its just as good as the others! The salsa even comes in a big pitcher that they leave on your table so all you'd have to do is ask for more chips. Will 100% go back! read more

The food here is amazing! My wife had steak tacos, they came out piping hot! They come with cilantro and onion on them. Perfect! I had the steak torta. It is huge! They bring out chips and salsa when you are seated. The server took our order right away and it was not a long wait for our order to arrive. I don't usually write yelp reviews but I had to for this place. I chose it because it was free delivery on doordash and I'm so glad I did! I got a steak taco, chicken tamale and side of beans. The steak taco was so good and a great portion. I usually stay away from steak tacos because of all the un-chewable fat that is usually in it but I didn't have any pieces like that in this taco! I was so surprised, I wished I had ordered two! They garnished with plenty of cilantro and onions. So good!! The chicken tamale was good as well, served in the corn husk (it felt more authentic ). This was not as flavorful but I think that should be expected with chicken tamales versus pork. Nevertheless, it was enjoyable! The chicken was great quality as well. The beans were beans, but definitely better than the soupy beans that come at El Nopal and other places like. I will definitely order again!! read more

Number one thing: This is located in the same building as the Salvation Army thrift store. That might make it a bit easier to find. Tried Tenda El Probedor today and had high hopes based on reviews and on the very authentic feel of the restaurant. The folks working there could not be kinder. Extensive menu posted above the counter. There were four of us. We ordered a torta, enchiladas, and tacos. I was disappointed in the salsas. They have green and red and neither of them were particularly spicy. The refried beans were good, but the rice was sort of dry and didn't taste fresh. My carnitas tacos were just okay, nothing special. The pork was not very good and had a lot more fat than I usually find on carnitas. The torta was probably the best of all the dishes. Everyone who tried it liked it. The steak tacos also were tasty according to my friend who ordered them. Tenda El Probedor is okay but not a place I would go out of my way to eat at again. read more

It's a little shop that's expanding because it's doing good business. The tamales were good, the tacos were better, and the cake was fantastic. Several employees of a competing Mexican restaurant were eating at the table next to ours, in uniform. Paying to eat here when they could probably eat free where they work says a lot. I won't go to other Mexican places locally unless this one is closed. read more

From the street, you can't see it. From the parking lot, you *still* can't see it. But if you walk around the side of the building, there it is, an authentic little no-frills outpost. One of my favorite things about the rural midwest is that the landscape is dotted with these little Mexican places, and one of my favorite things about Yelp is that it helps me find them. Basically it's a kitchen and dry goods store, with a couple of tables set up in back. The tacos we ordered were well prepared, and we were excited to leave with a couple of tamales (which are only prepared on weekends). I'd have been more excited about the experience if it weren't for the fact that the meat on my milanesa torta was so tough that I had to give up wrestling with it. But on the whole, our lunch was quite good, service was very friendly, and we'll probably come back sometime. read more

This place was a little hard to find because they must have recently changed their name to "Rancho Alegre," but they are in the same building as the Salvation Army. The place was small and we were the only customers there, but the food was good and seemed very authentic. The staff was kind too. My friend got the asada, carnitas, and cabeza tacos and he said they were pretty good. I got an asada taco and it was good, tasted like your average street taco and then I got the chorizo torta. I have never had a torta before but this one was great, and I'm pretty sure it was bigger than my head! It's basically a Mexican sandwich with whichever meat you choose on it. The chorizo was delightfully spicy and worked well with the avocado, tomato, lettuce, mayo, and other toppings. I was stuffed after the torta and taco, so I'd probably just recommend getting tacos OR a torta. But this place is definitely worth the drive! read more

SO SO glad I finally made it to this place. After finding it on Yelp and reading the reviews I thought, "yeah right...authentic Mexican...no such thing in Indiana!" As you can tell by my 5 stars I was wrong! Don't be taken back by the location, building and atmosphere upon entry. It's more like a bodega (Mexican for mini-mart or small grocery store) with a counter for ordering food with the most random compilation of items you can imagine and a bit sparse in the very center which leaves you standing in the open feeling a bit out of place. However, look up to your right and start deciding what you want to mow down on...the little Hispanic ladies behind the counter will work hard to prepare your meal, all fresh and homemade (English speaking is minimal). We decided upon several items (going Tony Bourdain style) since I knew it would be a while before I would be back and I really wanted to check out the "authenticity". Having lived in Tucson, AZ for 20 years, my perspective is massively skewed. Needless to say, the reviews were spot on. We tested the tamales, tortas, tacos and corn masa thingy that I cannot for the life of me remember the name of. Everything was absolutely amazing, especially the corn masa thingy! The tamale was perfect and not dried out like most around here. The best part was that it wasn't covered in processed cheese sauce! And the tacos were exactly as a taco should be! More street taco in nature, with 2 small corn tortillas, lightly fried, meat, onion and plenty of cilantro with limes on the side. It has been 5 mon5hs since I came here. Wasn't sure how my girls would feel like it. But they loved it. I tries the tongue ane have to say was impressed on the flavor. Now I will have to try the head taco next time. It hard to eat because of having the sleeve surgery in November. The reason is because y eyes can see more and my taste buds says bring it on! This place is wonderful: awesome, authentic Mexican food, cheap as sin, and friendly staff. Big thanks to the first reviewer for highlighting this place! First of all, the map (currently) shows the wrong location. The address is correct, though, so paste it into Google Maps and you'll get directions. Second, the restaurant has no signs on the street and is very difficult to locate. I was standing right next to it and didn't see it. You want to turn into the Save-a-Lot parking lot then look for the white building on your right. That's the place. When I walked in and asked if I could order some food the head lady (manger?) asked me if I was sure and warned that this was authentic Mexican food. Good sign. The menu is a over the counter and there are no prices so you have to ask. Everything's extremely cheap with tacos at $1.50 and burritos at $4.00. Their rice & beans with meat plates were on the higher end at around $10. The first time I went I got a burrito and a taco and was stuffed. About the service, when I came back for another meal a few days later, I said that I wanted to try some different meats. The lady in charge actually remembered what I had ordered and suggested some new ones (which, by the way, were tongue and "head" ... I forgot to ask after eating it all up if that had indeed been brain). Another example of the personal service: after my first meal I had commented that I thought the food would have been spicier. The when I returned, she remembered and brought out a spicer sauce with quite a bit of kick. Taste-wise, I absolutely loved the food. I've only had 5 or so authentic Mexican meals, so I'm no expert, but I thought it was wonderful. I especially appreciated the fresh, homemade sauces and wedges of lime served with everything. The atmosphere was great with the kids milling around and their no-pretenses setup. My only complaint is that they don't serve free tap water. You can grab a bottle of water from the cooler which, when you figure how cheap the rest of the food is, is still a good deal. Oh, and they make their own tamales but only on Fridays. I'm heading back there tomorrow to sample those bad boys. Do yourself a favor and eat here. read more

Bring on the cilantro! This place put cilantro in everything we ordered (except for the cheese quesadilla). I love cilantro, but my mother-in-law thinks it tastes like soap. Therefore, if you are cilantro-sensitive, keep in mind that you might have a problem here. Despite the language barrier, we all managed to order and get what we ordered. My burrito was pretty big. It had cilantro (shocker), beans, rice, steak, and cheese. I would give it a solid 4 out of 5. This place is a little Mexican grocery store, strip mall, mom & pop little place. I love this family owned, Mexican home cooking restaurant. Actually, I can't even call it a restaurant. It's more like sitting down at your grandmothers kitchen table, she asks you what you're in the mood for, and then simply brings you wonderful food. Friday's are for fresh cooked rojo & verde tamales. They sell out quickly. Most everything is $2 each. Don't be turned off by the location or the lack of a true storefront. Its not fancy, but its good simple food. The steak and the chorizo are really good. I always get 3 tacos or a burrito and its enough food. The steak and chorizo street tacos with cheese, onion, and lime juice and no cilantro or the burrito with steak and chorizo, no cilantro, and lime juice is a great lunch. They have a bunch of other meats and probably other dishes but the street tacos and burritos is all I've ever had. read more

Been hearing about this place for some time.. decided to stop in and and check out the hype. After I passed the building up twice, I finally found it.. it sits on the left side of a large metal shop, that holds several businesses. Well man oh man! And I glad I did! Service was excellent, amazing hard working ladies, serving a menu of delicious authentic Mexican food. I ordered "street" style tacos with onions and cilantro and a wedge of lime, they were amazing! This place is a hole in the wall. That being said, the food is very good, and cooked fresh right in front of you. I have tried most of the tacos, the chicken burrito ( will fill up anyone!) Today I had the chicken plate, came with rice and beans and a lettuce, tomato salad. It was too much to eat at one setting. The chicken was perfect as were the beans and rice. Also the green Chile tomatillo salsa ( I think that is what it is ) is so good, with just the right amount of spice. read more

I've been here once so far. I plan to visit again when the mood strikes. I enjoyed the food and so did my other half. Our main complaints were a lack of veggies (we like bell peppers and onions on everything Mexican) and some of the meats were a bit on the tough side. We tried quesadillas and tacos. The menu is fairly straightforward and we didn't have any problems ordering or encounter much of a language barrier. They have a picture menu that you can point at if need be. The atmosphere and decor isn't much, but the food makes up for it. You can watch them make it right in front of you behind the counter. So grab yourself a Jarritos soda and enjoy the closest thing you can get to authentic Mexican food around here. read more

Thank you to all who contributed to the review of this restaurant and I would encourage anyone in the area that would like an authentic Mexican dish to come to Tenda el Probedor. We ordered the burrito and shared it. It was plenty of food and took another home to enjoy the next day. We watched the cook prepare our food and could sense her enjoyment and love for the preparation. We will certainly try to stop here again when we travel to Louisville to try some her other creations. Finding the restaurant was part of the fun as you circle around the Salvation Army store until you see the restaurant on the side of the building.
