I'll be staying here in August. Where can we get into the river or swimming hole? We tried getting tickets for the State Park but is sold out. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Located just west of Austin near Johnson City, Pedernales Falls State Park is one of the most…read morescenic natural escapes in Central Texas. Spanning over 5,200 acres along the Pedernales River, the park is known for its dramatic limestone formations where the river cascades over wide, layered rock slabs--creating the iconic "falls" that give the park its name. Pedernales Falls has a rugged, peaceful Hill Country vibe. It's the kind of place where you can spend hours exploring rocky riverbeds, hiking through shaded trails, or just relaxing by the water. The mix of open river views, rolling hills, and quiet wooded areas makes it feel remote. Ideal for a day trip from Houston, definitely worth checking out.

The…read morefastest route that we took was very scenic but of note the back roads to get there were winding, and there were some big dips and even a spot with some nasty potholes that knocked the hanging carplay screen off from the perch on my dash. The back road is also VERY dark, I meant to go another way when leaving after a star party that night (around 8:15pm) but I went back the way I'd come by accident and the road was DARK. I was able to navigate it ok with my high beams on but I definitely saw several deer and there are no streetlights so you have GOT to be careful. We actually even saw a car flipped over in a ditch around a sharp curve on the way - there were several police officers there assisting but drives the point home that winding and dark road can be pretty dangerous. It's one lane each way too. All this said - the park is cute! The main part folks go to see is the falls area, which is easy to get to from the visitor center. There are miles and miles of trails; the trailheads are a little difficult to find for some of them but there's a decent bit of parking around the areas. They do quite a few events too, as mentioned I came in the evening for a star party (most are 6p-9 or 10p ish) and they're free but you do have to sign up in advance. It's nice and dark out that way and check the weather bc it does get cold too - in Feb it was like 40-50F that night so you needed layers. Entrance fee is $6, seems universal for all Texas state parks. You can get a good flavor for the park in just a couple hours, or you could stay all day since there are many long trails. It's worth a visit if you're nearby!

The man-made pool has spring water; this is where I would recommend families with children or inexperienced swimmers go. It's lovely and more of a managed pool setting. We hiked down the stone steps to reach the natural springs which are so beautiful with a picturesque mini waterfall and a rope swing as well! However swimming here can be treacherous. I highly recommend water shoes as there are lots of rocks and moss in the springs. Water depth also varies greatly from one spot to another so it's important to be aware of that. Water temperature was comfortable and cool - felt great on a hot summer day. Wrapped up our visit in the garden, which is so beautifully maintained. Absolutely lovely and zen. The changing room and bathroom facilities are clean and easily accessible. We left feeling dry, happy, and peaceful after a wonderful day in nature.

Love that they have rules in place that prevent loud music to allow everyone to enjoy the place. The kids loved the rope swing but must warn it is challenging getting down to the lower pool as the rocks can be very slippery! The upper pool is spring fed and very cold but clean and leads to an awesome waterfall emptying into the lower pool. We also enjoyed walking through the botanical garden and listening to the many wind chimes throughout. Definitely hope to visit again in the future!

There's a small river that crosses through the camp site, but the tides were low and it didn't look like you could kayak or tube in it that weekend. It was nice to watch the ducks swim by though. I like that the campsite includes clean restrooms and showers. Each tent site provides you a bench, trash bin, bbq grill, and fire pit. Unfortunately, there was a burn ban in effect during our stay, so we couldn't light a wood fire. There was plenty of space between us and other campers, so it didn't feel cramped. One thing that could be improved is that the field is pretty rocky. We couldn't seem to find a spot for our tent that wouldn't drive a stone in our backs at night. The camp site offers kayak rentals, but it gets to be quite expensive. Visitors can also use the swimming pool located by the front office. If you're feeling hungry, want to grab a drink, or enjoy some entertainment, right by the entrance is a restaurant bar. They've got live music most nights.

It's more of a camper site with a dry-ish field nearby. I feel that this site just had extra land so it offered some camping grounds but you're basically in people's backyards on both sides, and near a highway so lots of car noise. Maybe there are sites offered deeper where you're not so close to roads and peoples homes. Overall, I still enjoyed my trip, but I would probably only return here if I had an RV Camper. Not the best spot for tent camping.

We had a…read moregreat view of the Llano river and were close enough to the club house to occasionally get their free WIFi. The camp was very clean and our space was crushed granite, grass, and a concrete pad with a picnic table. It was a beautiful view. It was very peaceful and quiet. Our only issue with the place was that the grass was very high to walk to the river and there were stickers everywhere! They were so bad, our dogs could not walk in the grass and the bottoms of our shoes would be covered if we walked to the river. We tried to pull the stickers that were growing from our grass area by our camper, but we still pulled plenty from our dogs' paws. The other issue we had, which people may not mind, is the crushed granite. This hurts your feet when you walk barefoot and sticks in your shoes, so we had tiny rocks n the camper. Again, only a slight annoyance. Bring a broom. I recommend water shoes or sandals because entry into the river is rocky. The river was barely flowing the first day, and swimmable, but I heard from the locals that they slowed the flow the next day at the dam up river. Water level went down slightly. They are currently dredging this portion of the river, we heard, but we never saw any machinery working. We brought paddle boards and were able to paddle all the way down river to the dam and bridge. That was very fun! It was a long walk to haul them down to the river. I wish they would let you drive down to at least drop heavy items by the shore. We also fished from the shore. Definitely recommend bringing canoes, kayaks, or paddle boards. Overall, we enjoyed this hidden gem in Llano. It is very close to town, and the town does have plenty of shops to explore in the square. My family really enjoyed our weekend here! We will be back!
