Having had some really butchered cuts in my time I am always quite nervous to let anyone new near…read moremy locks. I am new to LA and quickly discovered that my standard daily hair washing routine was making the ends split like crazy. I needed to take action, but was really concerned that I was going to have to have a lot of length taken off to make it look respectful again. I don't have a car yet so needed somewhere close to work. Yelp pulled up a couple of options within a couple of blocks from work with good reviews so decided to take a chance with Michael. Michael works out of the Lion Salons at Sunset + Vine. A salon facility where stylists can freelance by renting an individual space. The spaces are simple and clean and unpretentious. If you are looking for big salon style supermodel pampering with model posters on the walls and hair magazines stacked to the ceiling like Toni & Guy then this is not the place to go. Having said that, Michael was truly lovely. He took the time to analyze my damaged mane and listened to my thoughts, as well as making some suggestions of his own. He didn't try to go too outrageous with the style; being a first time client I appreciated it. He did even out the layers and make it sit very nicely without having to take too much off the length. Throughout the cut Michael suggested some places that I might like to check out being a newcomer to the city, and tips for how to care for my hair, and was generally pleasant to talk to. It was an added bonus at the end that the cut only cost me $66 including a 20% tip. I've paid a lot more for a lot worse from professional salons who should know better. I think that the combination of my hair being lightened and the LA water, I am going to have to get it cut a lot more regularly than I am used to, but I was happy with the job Michael did and will definitely be going back there.

Fast forward to July 2023. On the offchance, I stopped in at Fantastic Sams on Western Avenue (Park Western) in San Pedro hoping for a quick, simple trim. There was an ancient man at the cash register and the place was empty except for one stylist doing hair. I inquired about a trim and was told Roberto could help me. A very sullen, angry looking man appeared from the back and I immediately recognized him. This is obviously where this "professional, knowledgeable, important, know it all stylist has ended up. I said "no thank you" and hurried out. Dont bother with this Fantastic Sams. Crappy old receptionist and Roberto himself are waiting for you.

When it came to my hair, as soon as I tried to emphasize that my hair is naturally very light and fine and that I was concerned about how my hair was going to be treated, Roberto seemed offended and started to talk to me with horrible attitude telling me that he has been doing hair for 30 years and talk to me like I was being unreasonable when I as concerned about bleach and how my hair would be colored.. He would not even let me finish a sentence.. just kept talking down to me like I didn't know what I was talking about and he ended it with saying that he will gladly do my mother in law's hair for he extra charge but said my hair was too risky and didn't even want to do it.. I would like to emphasize that my hair is long and fine but not damaged from frequent highlights or coloring (my last highlights were from year and a half ago! There was absolutely nothing "complicated" (as Roberto stated) about my hair.. Just long fine natural hair that hadn't had color in a while.. What bothered me the most however was not what he said (I just assumed he had to come up with some reason to add additional charge to the $75 Groupon price lol) BUT HOW he said it and HOW he was speaking to me.. He was interrupting me and talking down to me as if I was some dumb teenager that didn't know what she is talking about.. I am almost 40 years old and it was very embarrassing to be spoken to in that manner in front of my mother in law who was visiting from Europe.. I would definitely NOT recommend Roberto to anyone.. he just seemed to have a chip on his shoulder or some personal ego issue that definitely interfered with his ability to listen to and serve a client..
