After a late workout, we were hungry and committed the faux pas of trying to find a place to eat in Amsterdam without a reservation. I had often passed Rakang and had always wanted to try it. It's a great location, just close enough to Negen Stratjes but outside of the too-touristy area. Rakang had space for us and also a very gezellig atmosphere- warm lighting, quirky and fun decor. (Check out the cheeky lamp, in the photo! haha!) Everyone was super nice and our server was humorous and attentive. The duck curry was delicious, and there are fun cocktails to choose from as well. I'll be back.

The food was amazing and the service was so friendly. Great Mai Thais and neighborhood ambience. Coconut crème brûlée is wonderful. All around a great experience.

Chicken Spring Rolls at Rakang.

After spending a long afternoon in Jordaan neighborhood of Amsterdam, we were looking for a good restaurant for our dinner. My husband wanted something tasty and a little spicy. We came across Rakang Thai Restaurant. This appears to be a family owned restaurant only open for dinner. It was quite busy and we didn't have reservations. The young lady told us to wait and she thought she could seat us in 10 minutes. Within 2 minutes, they had two tables to choose from. The restaurant is very decorative, and the tables are a bit tight as is the custom here, but it was very comfortable. We decided to just have soft drinks on this evening, and to start with Poh Pia or chicken spring rolls, they came three to an order, perfect for the two of us. The spring rolls were well-filled, hot and crispy. The plum sauce was nicely spiced, and so we felt confident we had made a good decision stopping here. We selected Neua Ka-praw (stir-fried sliced beef with Thai basil leaves, chilli, garlic, onions and yardlong beans) and Pad Thai Kai (pad Thai with chicken) to share. The Neua Ka-praw was served with white rice and was simply delicious. The beef was so tender and the dish was at just the right level of spiciness. The Thai basil leaves were so fragrant in the dish, but weren't overwhelming. The dish was a nice blend of all the spices. The yardlong green beans, were fresh, tender and provided a great crunch. We enjoyed this dish very much. The Pad Thai was reliable, tasty and the chicken was tender, cooked to perfection. If you have a need for a bit of spice while wandering the canals and streets of the Jordaan neighborhood of Amsterdam, this place is a hit. Give it a try!

We got recommendation for this restaurant but was disappointed with food. The flavors were missing, not a good option for vegetarians.....Pad Thai was atleast okay!

Red Curry with whole prawns. Fantastic!

Tiny but mighty! Some of the best Thai food we've ever had. The curry was rich and thick and had the depth of flavor you expect from a great curry. The pad thai was not as flavorful, but was decent.

Old school bathroom very cool

Got table for six. Staff was super nice and very attentive to our order. Waitress Bo was very nice. Food is authentic and served well with timing of apps and drinks.

A small hole in a wall joint that serves very tasty but tiny portions of thai food. While the manager/owner appears to be very friendly, the rest of the staff seems to be very unhappy serving customers. Its definitely service without a smile!! Its too bad, i would definitely come back for the taste but the serving size and dour attitude of the waitresses definitely a big turn off......

Here's what we ordered: 82 - Pad Ka Ki Maul (Spicy fried rice w/ chicken fillet, garlic, basil, chili peppers): If you love big, bold flavors and some heat, this is it. I am salivating just thinking about eating this right now! And they do not skimp on the chicken either. So flavorful! I wish they picked the basil leaves off though rather than tossing in the whole sprig. 83 - Drunken Noodle: Also known as Pad Kee Mao. Pretty much the same flavors as the previously mentioned dish, but with noodles instead. Typically this dish is served with big flat noodles, but they use pad thai type noodles instead which I was a little skeptical of at first. But after my first bite, my initial worries were gone. Again, big flavors and wok hei. 88 - Som Tam: Your typical papaya salad, but absolutely swimming in "dressing/sauce" which I love! It's definitely on the sweeter side of things though which my wife personally didn't care for, but I thought it was great. 85 - Spicy tom yum noodle soup with chicken: Not really the type of tom yum noodles I'm used to at home, but still good. But definitely my least favorite thing I've ordered here, but again, still pretty good but I'd order something else. Anyway, if Bird was back home, I would absolutely consider this a go-to type of spot. If you love Thai food and/or want something comforting, Bird is definitely a great choice. The restaurant feels lively and the service was fast and friendly!

Often times there is a line leading outside to get a table due to the popularity of Bird Thais. The service is friendly and prompt. I've tried a variety of dishes on the menu but of course the classic Pad Thai is one of my top choices. Food is fresh and tasty. This time I tried the Isaan Menu which was a nice collection of spare rib appetizer, Tom Yam Kai soup, and a spicy beef salad. I really enjoyed the flavors of this dish. It is a very busy restaurant but there's just enough space to enjoy your meal without feeling like you are on top of the next table. Bird Thais is a very popular restaurant for a good reason.

An awesome Thai restaurant in Amsterdam city center!…read more We were walking around in Amsterdam city in the afternoon and was browsing for some Thai food for lunch. Our first time visited this restaurant and the overall experience was amazing! The quality of their food was excellent as in the flavor, authentic taste, temperature control and fresh ingredients. Their stir fried crispy pork belly with Kai lan was super good. We could not stop eating while waiting for our masamam curry to be served. The pork belly was roasted with smoky flavor and was really crispy blended well into the brown sauce with some little spicy chili flavor. It was just an awesome dish and goes well with white rice. Their masamam curry was rich and creamy with coconut . The beef was tender, the potatoes was soft and well cooked just at the right time management . With some peanuts in the curry made the entire dish super delicious! We enjoyed their food a lot!. Their service was great and staff was attentive to the customers' request. The moment you walked into this restaurant you know you made the right choice for Thai cuisine. Highly recommended for you to have a try if you are visiting Amsterdam city center. You immediately think you are another city then in Amsterdam. The staff was extremely friendly and had a very good attitude with us arriving so late. Being a group that enjoys family style, we needed Ho ordering a hodge of food. I will say the group favorite was the curry. This was everyone's vote but my own. I personally liked the chicken lo mein. It definitely shined over the mall Chinese food I had a few weeks ago. The Thai was my second favorite and it was a second favorite for the table as well. Very flavorful with a good hot and sweet vibe with the additional compliments available. I would go here again if it was the only thing open. Nothing was WOW... - Forever Foodie- Ela

We were walking towards another restaurant during a rainy afternoon and suddenly we passed by this hidden gem that looked super cozy and also the food looked perfect for the occasion, by that I mean steaming hot. We didn't think twice and quickly asked if there was room for two, which we ran with lucky bc the place is very small but two people were just paying to leave. We were promptly sat and attended. The food came out fast, steaming hot, generous portions. The chicken curry had an addictive ingredient bc it didn't matter that it was spicy I couldn't stop eating it! The vegetables were perfectly tender and tasty. The meat was juicy and cut into perfect bite chunks. Im not exaggerating when I say I had the most delicious chicken curry I've ever had in my life. My husband had the beef with garlic and white pepper which is onions. Also incredibly good. Both dishes came with a side of rice. At the end we were stuffed and super happy! We came back twice before leaving Amsterdam!

I have a food allergy, and it was clear our waiter understood the importance of getting it right when it comes to allergies and was very knowledgeable on the menu! He walked me through dish by dish, discussing the preparation and ingredients so I could know what was safe to order. I was definitely disappointed that some dishes I couldn't have because they were pre-pared with ingredients that I cannot have. However, it was nice being able to confidently eat what we ordered. We opted to eat outside (we try to eat outside as much as possible due to COVID) and it was a little chilly. There were heaters however they didn't quite get it done for us. Blankets would have been a lovely addition. We loved just about everything we tried. We ordered satay, coconut soup, a beef dish, a chicken and beef dish, and the mango sticky rice. The peanut sauce that came with the satay was amazing. I could have eaten it by the spoonful. The coconut soup was so good, and lovely to have in the cold weather. I really liked the beef dish but didn't much like the beef and chicken - and my husband was vice versa from me! So it worked out nicely. We were excited for dessert but the mango was so cold we thought it might have been frozen. So we are the sticky rice but left most of the mango behind. We really enjoyed our meal here and would gladly return. Of note - the staircase to the bathroom is super steep - I wouldn't want to take that with more than a couple drinks in!!
