Thai Chicken & Noodle Dishes ⋅ Centrum - Amsterdam, Netherlands
    Justin L.

I don't remember exactly what I ordered... but it was amazing. We were wandering around Centrum trying to find Van Wonderen Stroopwafels, and we stumbled across Phutakun on the way. It's a small but cozy restaurant, with a few tables outside. The menu is very extensive, with more than sixty different options. I had a little trouble looking around for what I wanted to eat. American Thai restaurants sort items by noodle dishes, rice dishes, etc. and then you add your protein (pork, chicken, beef). But Phutakun separates by pork, chicken, and beef dishes. I don't think I was able to find pad see ew, one of my favorites. There were also prawn, squid, and fish dishes that I never seen before! We got a chicken dish that had green onions, side of rice, and a noodle dish that looked like ramen. Everything was a little different from what I was used to, but it was super delicious. Servings were on the smaller side, but the quality was there. Loved the flavor of the stir fry chicken, and the noodles were excellent. Service was wonderful, the man helping us was pleasant and very helpful. I appreciated his willingness to bring us cold glasses of water, something other restaurants in Amsterdam make difficult.

Delicious food, beautiful interior and great service. As a small snack on the house, they provided colorful fried prawn chips. We ordered; 1) Tom Kha Kai - spicy Thai chicken soup with coconut milk and mushrooms. A delicious soup nonetheless but this one was thicker than most Tom Kha we've had, which was a bonus! I actually like this thickness. 2) Mhoe Priaw Whann - sweet & sour pork with vegetables. The pork was cook thoroughly, wasn't chewy and a good texture. The sweet and sour sauce itself was good, it didn't taste artificial like a lot of other places. The vegetables were also thoroughly cooked! Usually it is the vegetables that at still raw and makes the food less enjoyable but not in this case. 3) Kuai Taiw Phad Sieeuw - fried noodles with tempeh, soy sauce and vegetables. This dish was what left an impression on me. Just the fact that they offer tempeh and great tempeh at that! I've never been to an Asian restaurant that has offered this and it is one of my favorite food items. The tempeh was cooked to perfection and had a great crunch to it. The noodles were nice and soft with slightly crispy ends. The vegetables in this dish were also thoroughly cooked. 4) Thai tea with coconut milk - although this is not on the menu, I had inquired if it was possible and it was! This was the best Thai tea I've ever had. It wasn't the standard Thai tea that every Thai restaurant serves but different. I can't put my tongue on it but there's a faint sweetness and able with this particular Thai tea that makes it stand it. It's not the coconut milk btw! My husband had a regular Thai tea and felt the same way. The couple downsides were that they don't provide tap water (it's listed in the menu) and the portions were a bit smaller than what we're use to expecting at a Thai restaurant. Nonetheless, we were very satisfied with our meal and will definitely come back whenever we're back in Amsterdam.

While walking around Rembrandt Square we came across this restaurant and we decided to have dinner here. Thai food is one of my favorite cuisines so I was excited to try their food. Unfortunately when we went inside the restaurant and requested to sit outside the waitress gave us a not so happy look. She took our order with a bit of an attitude, but my friend and I still gave her a pleasant thank you after we gave our order. The food came out fast. We ordered the thai version of Sweet and Sour Pork and Chicken with Cashew. The food actually taste pretty good, but the serving is so tiny and there is hardly any meat. I also did not like their version of thai ice tea since it has the medicine after taste. All in all I am a bit disappointed, maybe their other dishes would be better and maybe the waitress is not just having a good day, but tonight I feel like this is not a restaurant I would want to recommend.

Our go-to, excellent, authentic Thai in Amsterdam. Bookmark it! Phutakun is a small Thai restaurant on Reguliersdwarsstraat which is almost a crowded walking street in the heart of one of Amsterdam's gay quarters. The menu is simple and comes with all your Thai favorites, plus a few you probably never tasted before. The freshness and quality shine. Their appetizers are good, so try the Phutakun Mix which is a sampling. The Thod Man Plaa fish cakes are exceptional. For entrees, my Dutch friends usually go for the very tasty curry dishes while I lean towards the wok stir fried entrees. My favorite is Mhoe Krathiam Phrik Thai which is a spicy fried pork, garlic and mushroom dish served in a cute baby wok. So flavorful! I also love the Plaa Krathiam Phrik Thai which is a spicy fried fish, garlic and mushroom dish. Service is pleasant and you don't feel rushed. Free wi-fi is available on request. Whether dining inside or al fresco on the sidewalk, everyone seems to be having a good time enjoying delicious Thai specialties.

Authentic and delicious. May need a booking ahead of arrival otherwise you may not get a table!

Delicious authentic Thai food. The staff and owner are super welcoming and friendly. Great atmosphere and I enjoyed a lot the time yum soup and panaeng chicken.

After a long day of exploring the City Center, I sought out a nearby restaurant on yelp and found this wonderful hole in the wall Thai restaurant. It had great reviews for their service and food so I said, "Why not?" We walked in and we were welcomed immediately. Our waitress was very sweet and had no problem speaking to us in English. She provided us with white chips as appetizers that helped jump start our meal. We ordered Egg Rolls, Pad Kee Mao, and Yellow Chicken curry. The portions were plentiful and we had enough leftover for dinner (helped the budget). The best part... prices were very reasonable for the quality of food you receive here. My favorite was definitely the Pad Kee Mao. It was the perfect spice level and the noodles were cooked just right. There were no overwhelming flavors and blended perfectly with the Yellow Curry which was kept over a candle to stay warm! This place is a winner.

Wonderful Thai, great service on a relatively quiet side street in an otherwise lame touristy area.

Our first time visited this restaurant and the overall experience was amazing! The quality of their food was excellent as in the flavor, authentic taste, temperature control and fresh ingredients. Their stir fried crispy pork belly with Kai lan was super good. We could not stop eating while waiting for our masamam curry to be served. The pork belly was roasted with smoky flavor and was really crispy blended well into the brown sauce with some little spicy chili flavor. It was just an awesome dish and goes well with white rice. Their masamam curry was rich and creamy with coconut . The beef was tender, the potatoes was soft and well cooked just at the right time management . With some peanuts in the curry made the entire dish super delicious! We enjoyed their food a lot!. Their service was great and staff was attentive to the customers' request. The moment you walked into this restaurant you know you made the right choice for Thai cuisine. Highly recommended for you to have a try if you are visiting Amsterdam city center. We are a couple and we were looking for a nice place to have some Thai food on a Saturday night. When we entered asking if there was a table for two available, we were told to wait 5 minutes. So, we waited outside. Another couple were leaving, so we chatted to them about their meal and we asked what they would recommend. After a few minutes, we went inside again and we were aggressively waved away and told they were closed. I was left quite shocked and confused. At most, we had maybe been 7-8 minutes, but also nobody had mentioned to us that the table was ready, or not ready. So, I don't know what happened here. But, I was mostly surprised at the anger and aggressiveness, as if we had done something horribly wrong. I posted this on TripAdvisor, and instead of receiving an apology, I was accused of lying. Why would I make this up? So, I repeat. Do not go here. It's not authentic Thai food, the staff are dreadful (I have been to Thailand, and people are not like that there), and if you want to be aggressively waved away for absolutely no reason at all, well this is your place! We were quite upset by this, and also very hungry. Thankfully, there are many better options for Thai food, and we went to Thaise Snackbar Bird nearby. The staff were fantastic there, and chatted to us quite a lot. We told them about what happened (and they didn't accuse us of lying). Little Thai Prince (maybe replace the word "Prince" with something else). Also, I want to add that on Tripadvisor they respond to everyone's negative reviews with more rude responses and denials, instead of simply apologizing. I have been to Thailand, and I certainly never met anyone like this there. Shocking people, and a shocking place. -100 stars, if possible. It almost ruined our night. They should have paid me to eat there and I would have still said no. So glad we didn't actually get to eat any of their disgusting food.
