On our first evening in Amsterdam, as we were walking around the Dam Plaza area, we collectively opted for Thai food for dinner. My daughter located Krua Thai and guided us there. It wasn't far and the walk along some canals was scenic. We arrived around 6 p.m. (I think) and they asked if we'd made reservations. We had not, so we were seated upstairs. There was a narrow stairway up to their 2nd level. They had about 9 tables there. The servers brought menus and took our drink orders (still water). We considered splitting 2 orders among the 3 of us given that we were traveling, but the server indicated that the restaurant mandated everyone get their own entrée. We got one curry, one Pad Thia, and one veggie fried rice. This actually ended up being about right given the portion sizes. Everyone liked their food. We did need a 2nd still water for the table. We noted that another table got a pitcher of water, so maybe you can ask for tap water versus still (?). This place is worth checking out if you are in Amsterdam. read more

I was really excited to try Krua Thai based on Yelp reviews and a strong recommendation from a local shop owner I chatted up the day before. Ordered the Tom Yum Goong soup, Thai Basil Chicken and steamed Fish in chili and garlic sauce. The soup was a complete miss. It lacked key ingredients/flavors I'd expect to find in Tom Yum soup, like lemon grass, galangal and kaffir lime leaves. At € 9 per bowl it is not something I could recommend. The Thai Basil Chicken and Steamed Fish were very tasty. I'd love to try a few other Thai restaurants in Amsterdam for comparison but simply don't have time. The staff are super friendly and attentive. The restaurant has 2 floors. The stairs to the second floor are very steep and narrow, so ask for a seat on the first floor if you have a problem climbing stairs. I honestly don't know how the restaurant staff can go up and down those stairs all night. It is a very busy place and opens at 5pm. We didn't have a reservation but did get a table for two when they opened. I'd suggest making a reservation if you want to try them out. read more

What an experience. Found this restaurant through Yelp reviews and was excited to try it. WHAT A MEAL. The food was delicious, the flavors were out of this world, and the staff was so welcoming and helpful at picking out dishes. We really enjoyed the stuffed chicken, the beef, and the appetizer with the nuts and leaves. Very small restaurant so call ahead if you can for a table like we did. This was definitely a highlight of our trip to Amsterdam; will return when I get back to their magical city. read more

The stuff chicken may sound like a good idea to try but it has no taste. 2. A pitcher of water is 2.50. 3. Medium spice = no spice. Simply the best Thai food I have ever had. The service is very attentive. The owner spent time with us and explained the various ingredients used in Thai cooking. The Chef told not left the sauces mix on plate. Eat each one separately so you can taste the ingredients. He was right. Have the Chef or the waiter make recommendations based on your personal preferences. You must have the special Pepper Leaf appetizer... very fresh and unique. read more

Made an order to-go and the service was very friendly and even threw in a complementary appetizer. Portion sizes were great. They even threw in complementary candies for the kids. The one oversight was that I told them to make things mild where possible and no nuts -- one dish was topped with chili peppers and another curry had whole peanuts in it with no warning. read more

Great place. Service is definitely great, our waiter was very polite, smiling and proficient on any dish. Food was super nice, and they ask you weather you are ok with super spicy and they would turn down the heat if you want to. My red chilly chicken with coriander was great and so the fish cakes. Thai beer as you wish and anything else from the bar. It is a very tiny 2 floors shop so you'd better reserve in advance. The chef, looking Thai, passed by to check if we were all fine with food. April 2018 Update: GREAT NEWS! STILL AWESOME FOOD AND SUPERB FRIENDLY HELPFUL SERVICE "How hot do you want your dish?" Then, prepared EXACTLY to your wishes. I do want to reiterate my sole negative comment below: Rice will be served without asking for it but IS ADDED to your Bill as an EXTRA. NOT COOL! 2014 We first ate at Krua Thai, Amsterdam, 3 years ago. My wife and I just had the opportunity to return to this fascinating city. We also HAD to return to Krua Thai; it was THAT notable 3 years ago. I am happy to report that the food and service IS still notably good! This time my wife had the stuffed chicken wing appetizer. These were like nothing we had ever had before, anywhere. The chef removes the bones from large chicken wings, blends the meat with veggies and stuffs the empty wing skin with it. They are then deep fried. My wife loved them. She had vegetarian Pad Thai with a dense tofu. She again requested low oil and not hot. It was made exactly to her liking. I had Tom Yom Pla, the spicy, lemony, soup with fish. I loved every drop of it. For my main course, I reprised the fish filet in a light, slightly sweet, lemony sauce with finely minced red chilies. Note that the super waiter solicitously asks how hot you want your food; you can get it anywhere from not hot at all (why bother?) to OMG, gimme water! Like 3 years ago, the fish was absolutely delicious. Made with fresh basil and, I think, lime leaves. Three years later and the price had not changed. If you are used to getting rice or noodles as free accompaniment to your Asian food, beware that they are offered to you here, but they are extra. The husband and wife owners greeted us this time, and she made sure we were happy during our meal. The service was impeccable. If you are in Amsterdam and want something other than local cuisine, or the ubiquitous "Argentine" steakhouses, I highly recommend Krua Thai Classic. It is only about 1/2 mile from Dam Square, but tricky because of several canals in the way. Also, I don't know about peak season, but at least in December, they are only open for dinner starting at 5PM.  I saw that another reviewer commented/complained about the cost of the food. Yes, the restaurant is NOT inexpensive. Where I live, in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C., a small bowl of Tom Yom with chicken will cost $5. Thai food is NOT inexpensive anywhere. But, there is another point to be considered. When you are "downtown" in virtually ANY city of the world, food is expensive unless you want to dine at McDonald's, other fast food equivalents, or at the now ubiquitous (and usually excellent) kabob restaurants that are generally inexpensive. Krua Thai is "MODERATELY" expensive. Not "VERY" expensive. BUT, you get food that is fresh and that was prepared for YOU, in accordance with YOUR wishes! read more

We were fortunate enough to get a table on a walk in and were treated to imho some of the best food I've ever been exposed to. The tom ka gai soup alone was an explosion for the taste buds. Hands down my favorite Thai restaurant in the world. I've eaten here many times, and will always stop in when I'm in Amsterdam. It's a small location, so reservations are recommended, but if you show up early you may get seats before the later diners arrive. Everything on the menu is good here - seriously, you can't go wrong. The Tom Kha Kai coconut soup is just delicious, one of my favorites. All the spicy soups are good, too. A really interesting appetizer is the Meang Kham, which has six leaves with a mixture of coconut, lime, shrimp, and other spices wrapped on top. Really amazing flavor, and light. We've had their curries, the green chicken is great and one I eat often. Panang and Massaman are both excellent, too. Anything with prawns is killer. However, the dish I cannot live without is their beef salad. It is mind blowing. Ask for the "off the menu" version that is spicier. So good! You can't go wrong here. What an experience. My coworkers usually come here when we're in Amsterdam and I finally understand why. The chef/owner is a showman and the food is delicious. The chef fed us some food, like literally fed us. We let him choose the dishes for us and there was not a single one that wasn't delicious. He asked us our preferences, whether or not we eat spice, and dietary restrictions and all of us were satisfied by the end. That, I think, is difficult to pull off. Krua Thai was a new discovery for us this trip to Amsterdam and that is mostly due to the previous excellent Yelp reviews. Krua Thai is very popular so be sure to set a reservation if possible. We didn't have one but got lucky as we went early. The menu has all the classics and then some, there is something for everyone. What sets Krua Thai apart from other restaurants is the outstanding food AND SERVICE. Even though they were very busy our server took his time, asked us what we liked, what we were willing to try, spice levels, etc etc. He was not going to put our order in until we had positively made our minds up. We had a couple apps, chicken satay which was juicy and flavorful and the Meang Kham which is a unique and fantastic combination of fresh herbs, spices, dried shrimp etc and comes on a wild pepper leaf which you fold and eat. When you come here, don't miss it. Entrees were also excellent, shrimps in red curry and coconut milk and fried beef with garlic and black pepper. Both entrees were full of flavor and perfectly spiced (medium). We were full but had to try the sticky rice with mango and coconut. Glad we did as this version was great, fruity, creamy and perfect texture. Krua Thai also has a nice wine and beer list if you would like. If you crave Thai, give Krua Thai a try you won't be disappointed. read more

This is the best Thai food I've ever eaten!! My daughter is vegan and the owner was more than willing to accommodate her and made several recommendations. We decided to share the multi-course vegetarian menu and it was all delicious! The cabbage salad was warm and crispy with some heat. The special house appetizer was fed to us by the owner (yes, I said he fed it to us!) with instructions to chew it slow and several times to enjoy all the flavors. What an experience and it should not to be missed. Our main courses had many warm, crisp vegetables and tofu and it all tasted fresh and flavorful. Our favorite is parang curry and it was our favorite here too. Although we didn't think we could eat another bite, we couldn't resist trying the mango with sticky coconut rice and we weren't disappointed - a delicious light and creamy dessert that ended a phenomenal meal! This place was busy on a Sunday evening at 8:00pm so it might be wise to make a reservation but tables turned over quickly and service is more than stellar. The entire meal and experience felt very personal. You can tell that everyone here enjoys what they do. Went here for dinner on a Sunday night. We got the prawn satay for appetizer. It was very good larger prawns split and served. For mains we got veggie fried rice, chicken thai chilli and prawn yellow curry. All dishes were yummy. Like many restaurants in Europe rice is not free you have to order it separately. The restaurant is nice. Bigger for Amsterdam standards. All in all good thai food in an unexpected location. read more

Staff were attentive & given our party's members, a suggestion of doing a chef's combination saved us a lot of bother & brought out exquisite food. Apart from satay & fish patties, our waiter brought us their special appetizer of crushed peanuts, coconut, dried shrimp, chili, lemon & palm sugar/tamarind wrapped in a pepper leaf. A real palette cleanser. An array of main dishes ran the gamut from pad Thai to beef basil & jumbo shrimp curry. Dishes were tasty, well spiced, and looked beautiful. Great food and very legit thai food being that I'm thai. The owner/chef was great and very friendly and ordered all of our dishes for us as he knew what was best. I yelped this place being that I haven't been back to Amsterdam in years but this place has been open for a long time the owner informed me. Also being from NYC and going back to BKK a lot I've been to a ton of thai restaurants, and this place was legit and didn't disappoint. The chef even made me an off menu item-minced pork fried egg omelette-a common staple of thai street food and home cooking which was so awesome and nice of him! In addition, all the cooks are thai so that says it all. And they speak english, thai, and dutch so they won't be anything lost in translation.
