We got a large table in the rear so it was quiet and we had our space. The food is plentiful, and service was great. We had three people waiting on us. After a late workout, we were hungry and committed the faux pas of trying to find a place to eat in Amsterdam without a reservation. I had often passed Rakang and had always wanted to try it. It's a great location, just close enough to Negen Stratjes but outside of the too-touristy area. Rakang had space for us and also a very gezellig atmosphere- warm lighting, quirky and fun decor. After spending a long afternoon in Jordaan neighborhood of Amsterdam, we were looking for a good restaurant for our dinner. My husband wanted something tasty and a little spicy. We came across Rakang Thai Restaurant. This appears to be a family owned restaurant only open for dinner. It was quite busy and we didn't have reservations. The young lady told us to wait and she thought she could seat us in 10 minutes. Within 2 minutes, they had two tables to choose from. The restaurant is very decorative, and the tables are a bit tight as is the custom here, but it was very comfortable. We decided to just have soft drinks on this evening, and to start with Poh Pia or chicken spring rolls, they came three to an order, perfect for the two of us. The spring rolls were well-filled, hot and crispy. The plum sauce was nicely spiced, and so we felt confident we had made a good decision stopping here. We selected Neua Ka-praw (stir-fried sliced beef with Thai basil leaves, chilli, garlic, onions and yardlong beans) and Pad Thai Kai (pad Thai with chicken) to share. The Neua Ka-praw was served with white rice and was simply delicious. The beef was so tender and the dish was at just the right level of spiciness. The Thai basil leaves were so fragrant in the dish, but weren't overwhelming. The dish was a nice blend of all the spices. The yardlong green beans, were fresh, tender and provided a great crunch. We enjoyed this dish very much. The Pad Thai was reliable, tasty and the chicken was tender, cooked to perfection. If you have a need for a bit of spice while wandering the canals and streets of the Jordaan neighborhood of Amsterdam, this place is a hit. Give it a try! read more

A friend and I found this place across the street from our hotel. It didn't look like much from the outside, but inside was much nicer than expected. The service was very good. I had Pad Thai (so good) and my friend had a beef dish which she said had really good flavor but the beef was a little tough. We liked it so much we went back the 2nd night. They had massaman curry with beef, and when I asked if I could substitute chicken, it was no problem. It was tender and delicious. My friend ordered a duck dish and said it was great. Tables are a bit cramped so you won't get a great deal of privacy, but friendly staff and colorful, cozy ambience make it off to a good start. The menu is really extensive with plenty to choose from: soups, salads, meat, poultry, fish, seafood and desserts- you can come here 20 times without having to choose the same dish! We had an excellent Tom Kha Kai (chicken and coconut milk soup) and the Keang Ped Yang (duck in red curry) was to die for. The other dishes were also good. I wanted to find a nice Thai restaurant which could take in big groups since we were a party of 8, and came across this place since it got great reviews from Yelp as well as Tripadvisor. The restaurant was very clean and charming, and the staff was very welcoming in all aspects. They let my boyfriend and me sit inside 15 minutes earlier since we arrived there before everyone else and let us order drinks while waiting. I ordered a Mai Tai which was very good but was a bit on the sweeter side, and as the rest of the party arrived, we ordered one dish from each part of the menu to share such as noodles, salad, fried rice, duck, seafood, chicken, beef, and appetizer samples. Although the food was not authentic Thai, the dishes were delicious and the menu was friendly towards people in our group who could not eat spicy food. I gave this place 5 stars for having great service, pleasant ambiance, clean environment, and delicious food. I would definitely eat here again, either with just a friend, or a big party. read more

We've gotten take out here a few times and dined in with a large group one other time (make reservations, this place gets packed!) - the space itself is cozy with some funky wall decor. The portions are massive and the spice level was as advertised (none of that 3 chili denoted on some menus in Amsterdam, only to be greeted with a not-even-the-slightest-bit-spicy dish - my friend was legitimately sweating into his dish!) but the food was lacking in depth nonetheless. The noodles were dry and bland and the curry dishes were just missing...something? My guess is the coconut milk or something else which usually makes these dishes heartier. And so my quest for the best Thai food in Amsterdam continues... Note: Don't even attempt to order the recommended wine that they claim "goes well with Thai dishes" - I wish I could remember what it was called, but it was like drinking pure lychee syrup, WAY too sweet! read more

Went there with our 2 little kids (3 & 6 yo) and our kids are always starving when we show up at a restaurant. The staff was very attentive and got us something quick for the kids. I feel like they could have brought all of the food as quickly as we wanted, but we sat on the street, took our time and paced out the food. While the place doesn't look like much from the outside, the food was really great - duck, green papaya salad, sweet sour chicken. They were great with suggestions and adjusting spicyness. read more
