    Doolin Hostel - Private room/bathroom

We chose this hostel based on the great reviews and it's proximity to the Cliffs of Moher. We…read morearrived at night via car. We had a private room and it had all the amenities we needed. It shares a parking lot with its sister location Doolin Inn. Breakfast was included in our stay and was pretty good. The staff here is absolutely amazing. They were so sweet to us and even when I had called to ask about a first aid kit they came across the street to bring it to me. The beds were very comfy and the water very refreshing. I highly recommend this location to young travelers.

Doolin Hostel is located fairly well... as central as you could possibly be in Doolin. Either…read moreside of the hostel, down the street you can find pub/restaurants. And you can walk down to the coast in about 10-15 minutes. It is rather easy to spot, as it stands out on a little hill and it is a yellow building. If you are bringing a group, on a coach, beware that it will be very difficult to get the coach up the drive into the car park and it could be very difficult to get the coach turned around. If you are driving a car, you shouldn't have any difficulty, just watch out for the walkers in the road. The website looked nice and it was fairly easy to organize things with the staff. I arranged, for an extra €3 per person, a continental breakfast for our group. However, was a little disappointed that it consisted of bread, juice, and milk. The staff member that helped us check in was really nice and tried to give us ideas of what the students could do. The rooms were ok, but really cold. There was one little radiator between the bunk bed and the double bed, but didn't seem to be on and there were no extra blankets. I was meant to have a single, but ended up with 2 bunk beds, a double bed, and another twin bed. The bathroom in my room was quite small... the toilet on one end, sink in the middle, and shower head on the other end. The problem was that the shower control consisted of a push button, but it only runs for a minute, and then you have to push it again. This can be a problem if you have shampoo in your hair and it is running into your eyes and you can't find the button... There is free wifi in the lobby area and that was nice, although there was our group and another group there and the lounge just didn't seem large enough for everyone to be watching t.v., on their computer, or sitting in front of the small fire. The kitchen area is very nice and very large so if you want to cook a dinner instead of going out, you have the facilities... the only problem is finding a store where you can get items to cook. The hostel does have stock some groceries for purchase, but not a huge variety. At night there is no staff around and not sure if there is a way to contact the staff if there is an emergency. I say this because the other group that was staying in the hostel (probably about 14-15 year olds) were wreaking havoc and their leader (who I think was in the room next to me) was having an epic telephone call in which she was yelling about the whole thing... and it may have been helpful to have a staff member from the hostel to help calm the situation down. Overall, for a hostel I would say that it is fairly standard, more to toward the basic side, but if you are on a budget and you aren't going to spend much time in the hostel or just passing through, then it may be for you. If you are looking for a more relaxing place to stay with a few more amenities, you may want to continue your search.

Also upon checking in my room was changed from the larger one to a smaller one, I was not even given an option. She did it to accommodate a larger family that came along... all fine and good but maybe a conversation should take place first?? She then got extremely upset when I asked for a towel past "working hours" I apologized profusely for the inconvenience (the inconvenience being her stepping two feet too her left and reaching in a cabinet). I then had to leave earlier than expected to catch a bus that only came along twice a day and even though she was awake and in the house and messaging me she refused to let me into the locked kitchen to retrieve my food before I left. It was 30 minutes before the kitchen opened you see. Everyone in town had something to say about this lady and none of it was nice. Go figure. I recommend the Rainbow Hostel down the road, it was in front of the bus stop I waited at and they invited me in because it was so cold and nothing was locked up everyone was free to roam where they wished! Imagine that! Don't let the pretty pictures fool you. That's all this place has to offer.

There is a fully stocked kitchen and comfortable public area. There is free laundry, but you can only use the machines after 6pm as they are being used for the hostel before then. There is one washer and one dryer, which we were hoping to use, but people were lined up to wash their clothes until about 10pm, so we didn't get a chance. It was pretty noisy at night - not sure if they have an upstairs area or what, but there was a lot of clomping around. It is about a 10 min drive from the Cliffs of Moher. Walking distance from a few pubs and cafes.

It just so happened that it was a bright, sunny day with a clear blue sky so we thought we'd take advantage of the nice weather. The O'Connor pub is right around the corner. We had some really good fish and chips for dinner along with a few pints of Guinness and Smithwick's. For dessert we had the Homemade Baileys and Biscuit Ice-cream with toffee sauce! The next morning after breakfast at the hostel we took the relatively short drive up to the visitor center and walked the cliffs. It wasn't as sunny as the day before so we were glad we got some nice pictures from the boat. And even though our room/window was facing the main street on the ground floor it was very quiet at night.

We only stayed here one night, though. I really want to give this hotel 5 stars, but I'm torn. At about 9:30 pm, after taking a shower, my son was charging his Chromebook. All of a sudden, the fan shuts off, and both of our outlets are no longer working. There was no red light alerting us to a tripped outlet. My son rings the bell (which is what we were told to do in case of an emergency after hours), and no one came. After talking to our other family members, I learned that my parents' room also no longer has power. Now this is a huge problem, because he uses a CPAP machine, and he would not be able to use it without electricity. I also called the phone number on the list of instructions, and it did not connect me. I had other family members try this, and they also could not connect. We had no electricity for chargers and no fan. It was super hot in the room, even with the windows open. We ended up getting power about 6 am, but the fact remains that we were unable to contact anyone that night. On a better note, their complimentary breakfast was gorgeous and delicious. Eddie, our server, was wonderful. I would probably skip this hotel if I'm in the area again, but I don't regret staying here. I just wish we were able to have contacted someone that night and then we would have had a better night.
