I really love Rainbow Drive-In, such an Iconic Spot since 1961, I remember during my daughter's college day, when she is back for visit and before she leaves, this spot was one of her special request. Of course when she is back to visit every year, she still request to stop at Rainbow! Her favorites is the breakfast plates, mixed plate especially BBQ beef and boneless chicken with gravy & for me I LOVE the boneless chicken, gravy all over but I need mines on the side along with the mac salad and a slushie float. I used to work at the district office and we were housed at Hawaii School for Deaf & Blind, so close to Rainbow, when I would visit once a month, a treat to myself, such comfort food! I sure miss those Rainbow Drive-In days with my daughter and for my lunch break! Lets talk about the breakfast fried rice special, lately I've been stopping here every weekend to pick up a plate of fried rice ( available til sold out) & from experience-they do sell out, the fried rice plate is only $9.95. This is the best fried rice ever, my opinion and always enough for me and hubby! The fried rice comes Portuguese sausage, chopped veggies ( celery & onions) and flavored nicely with choice of 2 eggs that covers the rice completely. I always get soft scrambled. I love the finishing touches of the green onions. yums! The rice is perfect hits every time & rice is not watery. Chef's kiss to the staff who made this fried rice. The line and parking lot can get crazy but the staff works hard to get the line moving fast, * there's a separate window for phone and on-line orders. I am so glad I live close by to this Gem. My go to for breakfast and plate lunches!! I think it is time for a boneless chicken plate lunch fix. I also like the lunch box that your plates comes in, paper plate and in a box, nostalgic & better than the flimsy paper take out boxes!
I ended up getting the mix plate with gravy. Bbq beef had good flavors however, I had to ask if the chicken was supposed to be pink and I was told it was. So I went back and tried to eat it but I just couldn't eat it. The chicken had the smell of raw chicken and when I tasted it, definitely undercooked. So I just decided not to finish and try to eat the rest but when I got to eating the rest of the Mac salad and lettuce, I found a piece of plastic. So I just tossed the rest of my food. Been here before and had good foods, I should have just stuck with my usual loco moco and bbq beef. The team members were nice tho and the place wasn't busy so I sat right away.

It's plenty of food for one person to eat. They are very welcoming and they will feel proud of serving this to the guest. It's a very old-school vibe since it's Hawaii. It's mostly outdoor seating but this place is always. It's been there around for a while now and I don't think they're ever going downhill one of the best places to try even though they're plenty of other options for you.

There was something very right about this drive in!! I stopped by for a quick dinner with the fam and ended up enjoying this place a lot more than I thought I would. I didn't expect much from this small corner diner, but everything turned out real solid! The exterior is especially entrancing, with its bright, rainbow neon sign that glows out the darkness of the night! The hooded interior was clean and followed well with the rainbow theme, especially with its rainbow pastel, title wallpaper. I would also like to compliment the workers, who were very nice and approachable! We ordered the loco moco plate, mixed plate, and saimin. Both plates were very filling and came in huge portions! The plates are for sure a top choice if you want a nice, hearty dinner! I especially enjoyed my loco moco! The saimin was less filling and came in an instant noodle cup. Still yet, it wasn't half bad--and it actually seems like a fairly good piece if you are on a diet or budget; it wasn't as expensive as the other dishes and only came out as 220 calories! I also want to note that they have a variety of tasty dessert pastries and icee treats if you are looking for a treat after your dinner. Overall, I would say this is a great diner to try if you've got a big appetite and are looking for something to share with a friend or family! Great vibes and great Hawaiian plate meals!
Heard so much about this classic Hawaiian spot and was so disappointed. I love a Hawaiian mix plate lunch normally, but this one was lackluster and just not done well. The combo plate consisted of below average versions of fishy fish, a thin cutlet and gray tough meat. The Mac salad was super mayo-y. Also got the garlic chicken, which had a good flavor on the sauce, but felt like the chicken was slightly undercooked and should have been fried up more. Ambiance is basic (and all outdoor seating). Maybe people like this because it's nostalgic for them... but I truly don't get it.
Stopped here for breakfast at 7:30 am after hiking Diamond head. Great parking. Friendly staff. We ordered loco moco, French toast, breakfast with spam. Super affordable prices, huge portion. The gravy for loco loco is tasty. The patties tastes a little weird and processed. Still worth it. Yes!
A local Hawaiian recommended Rainbow Drive-In to us, and I'm glad we stopped by. The loco moco was so good! Savory, satisfying, and an easy 5/5 for me. You order outside at the window, and there's plenty of outdoor seating. Our food came out pretty quickly, too. There's a restroom available; you just need to ask for the key. Definitely a delicious stop if you're craving a classic loco moco!
What an iconic gem! So sorry I missed it last time I was here. It has been profiled on Food Network as one of the best and it was so true! Made sure to come here the first night I landed so I did not miss out and could see if it lived up to the hype. It did. It is such a fun place to feel like you are having a picnic. You know this place is good since there is a steady line of people ordering bags and bags of food. Just to say, this is another must-do must-try place for food. We was super excited to have the mixed plate with gravy. It was beef, chicken and fish with rice and mac salad. It was huge and perfect. It tasted amazing and I would order this again and again. We had two of those. We also tried the loco moco and classic dish, and the saimin, which I had always wanted to try. One child also ordered the BBQ pork sandwich which she enjoyed and since it was a small menu item could help with the mix plate, which is impossible to finish in one sitting. I was stuffed and in woman versus food, food won overwhelmingly. I wish I had room to try the slush and ice cream or other items, but I could not eat another bite. So many items on the menu were very tempting and I am sad I only got to visit here one time. I do hope to return and have so many things on my dish wish list, but that mixed plate was so good, I bet I would go with that again.
Yum!! They do not skimp out on the mac salad. They gave us a lot more than other places. There is so much mayo on the mac which is good but i do wish it had more ingredients like some carrots and more salt and pepper. Bbq pork plate was also very good the meat had great flavor but at the end i had to end up eating around the fat because there was no more good pieces. Rice was a tiny bit bland but when muni g the yolk into it and having it at the same time as the mac made it a lot better. Overall good place we had a delicious filling meal and i would come here again. Lots of tables available for seating and all is outdoors as well.
For my first time, it's was OK. Limited seating. They also have 2 small stores to purchase merchandise. The service was decent. The food was OK. Honestly I don't see myself coming back. I prefer going to Zippy's. Also the vibe was off because there was an incident with the customers after us. Something about someone trying the purchase food with a stolen credit card.
Son wanted to go here. He saw it on TikTok. I got the. BBq pork meal. The pork was great. A gazillion pounds of rice. I only at about 1/4 of it. The macaroni salad was macaroni with what seemed like just mayo. (Not my jam). He had the loco moco. He loved it. Again a billion pounds of rice. Kid had a hot dog. Didn't finish it. Quality was really low. Maybe we are used to dodger dog snap style flavorful ones. Anyway was a nice little meal and took a walk at the park a couple blocks away to walk off the massive amounts of rice.
The line was a little long and the parking lot was pretty packed, but luckily we were able to find a spot. We ate at the outdoor tables, which was nice and made for a fun time chatting it up with friends. Overall, the food was SO good! Definitely worth the wait and would highly recommend if you're in the area.

If you grew up in Hawaii then you know Rainbows is one of the most iconic plate lunch places on Oahu. Mixed plate, extra gravy, Teri sauce and a slushee float will never do you wrong. Their bbq burger with French fries is also a good alternate if you're not in the mood for rice. This location is right by Waikiki aka a tourist hot spot so lines can get long but they do have online ordering now. If not then it's walk up ordering with a good amount of seating. BUT BEWARE OF THE BIRDS. They will snatch your food up if you give them a chance. read more

Driving home from lunch in Kaneohe my wife suggested we go to Rainbow Drive Inn for dessert. She wanted a slush float. It sounded good to me. So off we went. Got lucky and found parking in their parking lot. She got out to get her slush float. well when she returned she also bought a couple of slices of Lemon Squares. Service was fast and friendly. Well I had my slice of the lemon Squares after dinner. The crust seemed a little under cooked. The lemon filling was tasty and a had just a bit of tartness. The slush float was refreshing. We always come to Waikiki yearly. But we only stay in the beach area. Our cab driver recommended this place (about 15 minute walk from our hotel). Glad we tried it. You can either place your order online/phone or walk up/drive up and park. Plenty of parking and seating. I ordered the rainbow bento. That was plenty of food. It had spam, crispy chicken, fish strip and a strip of beef. My hubby ordered Portuguese sausage with two eggs and rice. Will definitely come back to this place. read more

It was a little tricky getting to it because of some construction on the road (I think that won't be an issue much longer) but totally worth making the effort. The portions are generous; a great value for the money and for a happy belly. Had the Loco Moco (good for a baseline) and the Mix Plate with gravy and sat at the lit outdoor tables to eat. There was a tasty, finely-shredded cole slaw (?) under the meats in the Mix Plate. Could have had that as a larger side, it was a hidden gem. Food came out decently quick given how busy they were. There's a cute shop with branded and some general Hawaii-themed items (bought a shopping bag) but forgot to snap any pics because I was distracted by food. read more

Okay in all honestly I came here because the Rock said this was his favorite loco moco on the Oahu! And let me tell you that loco moco was delicious!!!! The gravy was truly the star of the show, I enjoyed the patties but they could have been better but with all that flavorful gravy it was still amazing. I think they could make the eating area a little cuter with some lights or decor but still a very good bang for your buck! read more

Overall had a decent experience here - staff are very friendly. I got there just before the lunch rush around 1:30pm. They have three windows - one for online and phone orders and two for in person orders. I had the chicken lunch plate, which was not bad, though I'd have preferred the chicken to be slightly crunchier. There are at least ten tables around the restaurant but sadly all were full at the time I was there so I ended up taking my lunch to enjoy at Waikiki beach (around a 15 min walk). read more

We tried the loco moco and the chili cheese fries. The loco moco was really good but the chili cheese fries were not anything special. It's outdoor seating not indoor you can eat in your car technically. They were fast in preparing food. They were nice and attentive. I would say that keep in mind that there is just flies outside due to the fact that it's outside so don't leave your food unattended lol. There is also a souvenir shop right next to the windows it was super nice. read more

WHEN: Sat @12pm Needed a quick lunch so we thought it was easiest to come here for take-out. But since it's lunchtime, there was a wait. I was able to just order through the Toast app, and this is what I got: LOCO MOCO - $11.50 Two hamburger patties served on two scoops of rice, topped with our special gravy and two eggs cooked the way you like, accompanied with a scoop of macaroni salad. Pretty decent, I do not expect less for Loco Moco in Hawaii. There was outdoor seating, and a decent size parking lot. I came back to Rainbow Drive Inn and it's still super popular. I had to wait but not too long to get up to the window and order. I had the Mixed BBQ Plate (chicken cutlet, teriyaki beef and mahi mahi) and it was okay, I remember it being better many years ago but maybe I went on an off day? The meat was not hot in temperature so that was a little bit disappointing for me. However, the guy who took our order was nice as can be so it was good to be back to a place that has happy memories for me. read more
Not only was this one of my favorite meals on my recent Oahu trip, but I will start out by saying that I daydream about this meal often, LOL! We didn't get a chance to visit until my last night of vacay, so I ordered two items in order to make the most of it! On to the food! Long story short, this meal was epic! This was the best Loco Moco I've ever had, and the BBQ mix plate was off the chart! The beef patty and gravy were super tasty, and the mac was great as well. And often overlooked, their steamed rice was perfect as well. As far as the bbq mix plate, man, it was outstanding as well! Super tasty breaded Mahi Mahi, and both the chicken and beef were bursting with flavor. Plate lunches back home on the mainland are gonna be depressing from here on out, lol! I have to go here at least twice when I visit Oahu again! Recommend eating here if you have a gravy craving! Take out style with outdoor self seating after you order. All shaded seating. Ordered the Loco Moco and the Pork cutlet with gravy. I recommend both but really you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Parking available in front and on the side. Parking wasn't an issue when I went. read more

Service was ok today- probably because it was super busy- the guy was mis- taking orders, but he also fixed everything and apologized- more than you can ask for in CA- lol the food comes out pretty quick so don't worry about the line. The place is known for its quaint drive in vibes. The seating is not too bad- most people take it to go. There's a store there for merch so you never forget! The food is solid. Nothing game changing, but everything is cooked perfectly, perfect portions and the price is on point. If you want variety, get the mix plate, but don't skip on the bbq pork! Don't expect a culinary revolution- some people have this place low star reviews because they were expecting more. The food is excellent for what you come to a place like this for. 100% worth the visit. And don't forget the strawberry slush! read more

Loco Moco is solid. Good amount of gravy, nicely cooked meat, soft rice! Disappointed with the MacNUT pancakes, something was lacking, delicious nonetheless if you like sweet. Went on different days and it can get packed but they do try to get your order to you quick. Good amount of tables to enjoy your food but come at a busy time better luck eating in your car. Food is amazing. Being a Flexible Vegetarian means eating Vegetarian 70% of the time like myself. I spent more than half my life as a vegetarian and I still miss it. However, sadly our bodies don't stay the same as in our youths! I had to cave in to eating chicken & turkey aside from limited seafoods due to my metabolism & energy levels sinking as well as my unfortunate allergies to certain other foods. Low & Behold, Rainbow drive in in Honolulu offer Vegan nuggets with the options of coleslaw & Mac salad! This is exactly what I wanted! The staff are sweet & hardworking Filipino workers who are patient and kind. Thankfully the food doesn't take too long & the bathroom is not bad at all. My last visit to Rainbow Drive-in was 40 years ago. Nephew's last day from mainland wanted to try the place so I hesitantly obliged. He order the loco mo and I ordered the mix plate. Loco mo came out first because cook was busy eating in the kitchen and forgot to cook the fish. After 5minutes my mix plate arrived and look very unappetizing. Fish was barely cooked, beef was tough as leather and chicken was super greasy. I threw the whole plate in the trash after a few bites. It's cheap for a reason! read more
They've been around for a minute and for the price point offered, the food ain't too shabby. Dining is outdoors; picnic table style. Most of the area is shaded, so we can deal with that. But what we couldn't deal with were the birds who were all up on our grill trying to snatch our food. Ew. THE FOOD. - Mix Plate (BBQ Beef, Boneless Chicken, Mahi) | I'd probably just get the BBQ beef next time as the boneless chicken and Mahi were a bit dry. The sides were great; perfectly cooked sticky rice, creamy macaroni salad, and crispy french fries. THE DRINKS DRUNK. - Powerade Blue | Standard fountain drink. THE PARKING. There were enough open spaces that parking wasn't an issue. Parking was free. COMING BACK? I'd come back for more BBQ and to try other dishes. This is a casual place to hangout and get some inexpensive filgrub, but honestly there is WAY better Hawaiian food elsewhere The loco moco left a lot to be desired. You would think that dousing everything in gravy would make things automatically good, but that isn't the case unfortunately. The gravy lacked richness and umami. At least the eggs were cooked well. In my quest to explore the various cuisine scenes as well as other businesses throughout O'ahu's Windward side (east shore of the island) after a recent acquisition of an investment/private-use property, I revisited Rainbow Drive-In after so many years. This OG Hawaiian local eatery (still in its original location since 1961, and has since expanded to three total locations), was one of my favorite local haunts (along with Leonard's) when I spent summers with my grandparents as a kid. This was an easy bus ride or an extended walk from their house. Today, I felt it has become a tourist trap and nostalgically rightfully so. Was my first time back all rainbows and unicorns, or had things changed? PURCHASE Slush Float Medium ($5.50): A refreshing strawberry flavored drink, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, this was a wonderful appetizer while I drove home. I controlled myself enough to save some for dessert after I ate my real meal. Don't shoot the messenger but imo rainbows is purely running on nostalgia / convenience for most folks that visit. Old style drive inn, order, and grab your food at the counter. Plenty of run down seating to grab and eat at. Nothing about the service stood out as it was mainly self service. The food to put it simply is just meh. Everything seemed to lack any flavor and was just very bland. I thought the gravy could make up for it but it just tasted very floury and again, lacked in flavor. The first step of improvement is definitely just more seasoning... After this experience, I spoke to some of my friends and they echoed the same sentiment. Their food is mediocre at best but it's easy and cheap food. I would honestly give the place 2/5 but with the history that this place holds I don't have the heart to do so. read more

I come here every time I'm on the island. I was here for a few hrs on a layover back to the main land & they have my fav Mac salad. You can get it in a cup. This is a small & it's huge! Expect lines bc this place is that good. They have outdoor seating, but beware the birds. They will swoop your fries! They do have adequate parking as well. Will be back next time! read more

I've heard they do, but I have never been able to get through. You can also order online and still pick up through the "Phone Orders" line

Do they have traditional Hawaiian dishes with vegetarian options?
More like local comfort food, nothing's vegetarian at Rainbow. Go to Highway Inn or Helana's they have traditional Hawaiian food.
Can you order plate lunches in the morning ? Or is only offered after a certain time?
I have come at different times and have ordered "breakfast" at lunch and sandwiches for breakfast so I think you can order anything on the menu regardless of time.
Can i order lunch at 800 am? like teriyaki steak or beef curry
Yes for the Teriyaki steak. The Curry might be a special of the day so it's if it's on the specials menu you can order it. Try the teriyaki pork. It's really good.
What's the best thing to order?
Depends on your palate: Meat and potatoes - loco moco…
Do they do half portions?
I am not aware of 1/2 portion or mini-plate. That being said, order a sandwich, loco moco, or chili bowl. The Mahi, BBQ Beef or BBQ Pork sandwiches are da bomb.
