What makes Empire great are its people and the facility. The Director is Miss Carol Dino, a long time educator. She is super responsive and loving. Loving. That is one thing ALL the teachers have in common at Empire. They adore their children. All the teachers in all the classes know all the children's names! Miss Joy, Miss Gloria, Miss Janet, Miss Jessica, and Miss Lori are all kind and effective teachers. Miss Mei is also one of the leaders at the school and attentive to everyone and their needs. Our daughter started in the Infant Classroom (up to age 2) and in two more weeks will be in the Toddler Classroom (ages 2 to 3). To help with this transition, the teachers proactively invite her into the Toddler classroom various times of the day including whether it be for naps, lunch, or another activity. She also gets to play in the "big kids" playground. The school recently partnered with CLAPArts dance class once a week to offer convenient dance classes (ballet, jazz, hip hop) for the children. The classrooms are bright and cheery with central air and heating, child gates, two playgrounds, and locked gated access with a pin number or key entry only. The building is two stories, but the second floor is not used by the children. Empire uses the Brightwheel app for easy electronic check in and out and communication with teachers as well as the Director. We are sent daily pictures and videos of the class via the app. My messages are always answered immediately and if I need to call the school, there is always a live person answering. The school also takes health and safety very seriously and has adequate protocols in place for daily cleaning and sanitation as well as quick action after any kind of exposure, which is rare. Empire is one of the few Montesssori-based schools that still offers healthy lunches. Our daughter does not eat pork and the school has noted this. From her teachers and teacher assistants (there have been many over the years, so it would be difficult to list them all) to the front desk staff Ms. Cassandra, Ms. Cindy, and Ms. Chitra, everyone has always been helpful, accommodating, and attentive to my daughter's needs and communication. The facility is clean, organized, and always feels safe. It was a brand-new school when we first enrolled, and they have continued to maintain the property and improve their operations over time. There is also plenty of parking, which makes drop-off and pick-up very convenient for parents. One thing I truly appreciate is how the school continuously strives to improve and enhance safety for the children. Over the years, they have implemented several positive changes, such as installing doorbell alerts when classroom doors are opened, tracking and documenting classroom attendance to ensure every child is accounted for, and upgrading their communication system. Parents can now easily view photos and receive updates about their child's daily activities and progress through the app. Most importantly, I have seen tremendous growth in my daughter since attending Learn & Play. One of the students came up and befriended Ellie while we were there -- and the two of them ended up being friends all the way through their last day of preschool together. It feels like such a perfect little snapshot of our experience at Sunshine. The teachers truly cared about Ellie, and she loved every one of her teachers from the very beginning. They put so much effort into creating fun projects and activities for the kids, and we loved watching how much she learned and grew there. Special shoutouts go to Ms. Lu, Ms. Yula, Ms. Jenny, Ms. Carole, Ms. Summer, and Ms. Kelly! We also really appreciated the Mandarin immersion. I don't speak much Mandarin myself (my high school Mandarin course is but a distant memory here), but Ellie's dad and grandparents do, so having her encouraged to hear, learn, and actually use the language at school has been such wonderful exposure for her. She came home singing songs, using words and phrases, and clearly feeling comfortable with the language in a way I never could have given her on my own. The school uses an app that allows for easy communication with the teachers, and we are kept up to date on lunch menu, curriculum, and photos. The school is comprehensive in their social activities such as annual winter performance, holiday celebrations, parent teacher conferences, family events, etc. The kids also have regular music and kung fu classes. The school is bilingual English/Mandarin, with a daily Mandarin language learning component, so it is helpful to have some exposure to the language and culture so the kids can understand better, and the lunches are sometimes Chinese meals. He's been in 3 of the 4 classrooms and all his teachers have been wonderful. While he was in the orange room, Ms Miriam and Ms Van took great care of him. He was still in diapers and we partnered with the teachers there to get him potty trained. In the green room he had Ms Priya and Ms Anna and they had to be his favorite teachers there. Currently he's in the red room and his teachers are Ms Zhila and Ms Ma. He's learned so much in a short time, he's doing addition, teaching me about matter, and planting vegetables. His teachers are so kind, dedicated, and caring. One of the biggest perks is that the provide lunch and snacks. My son always finishes his lunch and we're told he asks for seconds. We receive the monthly lessons and weekly photos. There are also activities happening every month, in addition to music class and kung fu. They also still continue nap time even in the red room so your child gets some rest after lunch. The school provides a great balance of academic and social skills. The students are majority Chinese and there are daily Chinese lessons. Even though we do not speak mandarin at home he's picked up mandarin in class and was able to sing us songs, speak some phrases, and count to 10.
