Located in the Dragon City Mall in Chinatown, this is a great place for delicious eats at a local bakery! I love supporting small-local businesses, and seeing these pastries for a cheap and affordable price really resonated within me! My friend and I ordered the BBQ pork buns for $2.50 each, which was super filling and delicious! We also ordered tiny bear cookies which were sold by the bundle and had cute designs on them! The shopowner is super kind and generous and is willing to make more of pastries if a certain bread is out of stock. Would definitely come again if I visit Calgary! A small local business that is a staple to the community!

Ever since we had kouign amann almost a decade ago in a French patisserie in Quito, Ecuador of all…read moreplaces, my husband has been on the hunt for the best kouign amann wherever we travel. The bad news is, there is no good kouign amann in Seattle or anywhere in the western US (so far, by our calculations). The fantastic news is that there IS stunningly delicious kouign amann in Calgary! I first balked at La Boulangerie because I had bookmarked two other bakeries to try. But I'm so glad we came here. Walking up to the storefront, I took in the quaint outdoor tables and the people enjoying a coffee and brunch. The first language I heard outside was French, which only added to the idea that we were in the right place. It wasn't busy when we walked to the counter at an off hour during the week, but I could see this place being slammed on a nice weekend. Do yourself a favor and take the time to look at all of the treats in the case. I had no idea which one to pick, but I'm so happy I went with the pear marzipan croissant - something I wouldn't easily be able to find at home. The savory breakfast crepes were tasty but could have been enhanced by a sauce on the side - the ingredients inside were a little dry. The Nutella latte was AH-MAZE-ING. Sweet, hazlenutty, but not overpowering. I immediately looked up a recipe for a future attempt to recreate it at home. The standout by far was the kouign amann, which comes in more than one flavor (insert mind blown emoji here). My husband chose a vanilla-filled one. Holy lamination. The layers, the glaze, the crunch. The vanilla cream filling was somehow both fluffy and delicately flavored yet sturdy enough to survive a day in the car. If I could fly back to Calgary every weekend just to buy a single kouign amann from this place, I would. Service was wonderful and we were surprised that that instead of calling our number, the staff walked each component of our order out to us. Highly recommend. Please visit and fulfill all your kouign amann fantasies!

We were here couple weeks ago and was looking for coffee and some sweet to go with it. This place…read morepop up on our search. Came in and it had a little crowd so we though it must be good. Turned out not so. The pastries are dry and not good. The worse croissants I have eaten for awhile. Staffs are not too friendly neither. Parking is not free and the meter didn't take coins even though it has the option of taking coins. Overall we didn't like it.

Paid $10 for a cup of hot chocolate. Not sure what to exactly feel about this haha but it was good,…read morerich, and thick. Definitely tastes authentic. Just not the best I've had. I'll come back tho. Probably one of the best places to get hot chocolate in Calgary tho no cap Service was great. Owner was there. Super nice and friendly. Ambiance is also cute. Small place but clean and aesthetic. Overall, just great. Seemed like a place with quality.

tucked into calgary's beltline, this little french café feels like it was made for slow mornings…read moreand long catch ups. the kind of place where you instinctively lower your voice, breathe a little deeper, and feel like you've been transported straight to paris (passport not required). so we had a late start to the day, showed up around 1:30 pm on a thursday and practically had the whole place to ourselves. the space is lovely, marble tables, black and white café chairs, it's curated but not fussy. perfect for catching up with a friend, or working solo. the pastry case is a total showstopper: buttery croissants, cookies under glass domes like little museum exhibits, and viennoiseries in flavours like cinnamon kouign amann, chausson aux pommes, beautifully striped croissants with apricot & almond, and saskatoon berry. they also make house made jams to sell in fun flavours like pear & vanilla, strawberry & basil, and mango & lemongrass. we scored the tufted velvet couch in the corner, it was soft, plush, and hands down the best seat in the house. we decided to share the following: mocaccino croissant tasted stale. dense, barely any coffee flavour, and a few scattered chocolate chips. almond croissant had a generous filling of frangipane that tasted too sweet. pear & vanilla croissant was the best of the bunch, it had some layers, slight crisp on the outside, and a subtle, not too sweet filling. caffe latte and matcha were just okay. the space is a whole vibe and worth visiting for the ambiance alone. pastry wise, we were hoping for buttery, flaky goodness with a nice chewy texture and only found a spark of it in one croissant. still, if you're in the neighbourhood, the black sheep's a charming little spot to hang out, maybe just stick to the coffee and the couch.
