Came for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. Football on TV in a lively pub is always fun. You need to order from the bar as there isn't full table service. The fish and chips were good. My husband was happy that the peas were left as is and not mashed. Bonus for that. The Sunday roast...skip it. The best part of the meal was the side of veggies. Two of the three veggies were good (carrots and cheese covered cauliflower) the cabbage was oddly dry and under seasoned. Everything else was just over cooked, bland, and, just not what I had hoped for. Beef was grey, dry, tough and unappetizing. The potatoes were overcooked and had the grainy texture from such. It's pretty bad when I don't finish my potatoes. I didn't finish my potatoes. The gravy was oddly sour tasting and didn't add to the meal; just confirmed I should stop eating it. The Yorkshire pudding was dreadful- dry, crunchy, bland. The food at other tables looked good and people seems to be enjoying it. Doubt I would go back though. read more

This pub was absolutely terrible. In fact there was nothing that made this place appealing at all, which makes it a bit of a shame that I randomly picked this place to have a drink at at Liverpool Street Station (I believe there are a couple of other pubs nearby). The beer was horrible, the pub itself was horrible (and the weather outside was horrible as well, but that isn't the pubs fault). Basically this place simply seemed to be one of those pubs that basically exist for people to have a drink at while they are waiting for their train, despite the fact that it isn't even located inside the railway station, but rather just across the road from it. In the end I sort of regret coming here and wished I visited the one across the road instead, but then again if I hadn't actually visited this pub I wouldn't have known how bad it actually was. read more

Let me begin my saying I'm an American and so locals should view my review through the prism of "non local guy reviewing food he thinks he understands or doesn't but thinks the internet should have his opinion." With that caveat out of the way, I began chasing steak and ale pies around London six or seven years ago, am in London several times a year for work, and know what I like. I really enjoyed the beef and ale pie at the Railway Tavern. For me, the best part of the pie is that it's entirely encased in real pie crust rather than being served in a baking dish topped in puff pastry like some places, and the meat and gravy were tender and savory. A couple bites of connective tissue served as the only distraction in an otherwise perfectly executed pie experience. Served with really nicely done chips (steak fries), English peas, and an additional bowl of gravy, this was the home run pie lunch I desired. The other members of my party ordered other food they said they enjoyed but it was nothing to include in the review (a hot dog and some kind of chicken and salad) as I didn't sample them. Stopped in here during the Easter weekend on a pub crawl. It was pretty slow with the holiday weekend and the street out front closed for repair. The service was decent. For me, the selection was pretty good. It was nice to see some US bottled beers available for those home sick. It is right across from Liverpool station so those waiting for a train or arriving and craving a drink, it is an easy visit. read more

The railway tavern is usually my second choice pub for this area after dirty dicks. Again, it has the advantage of a good size with 4 large rooms to choose from. Paddyman's inside tip is to head straight upstairs to the top bar to get a seat and a quieter bar. Often busy, the railway tavern also does a gastro pub menu. I took my partner there and my companions on a separate occasion. my partner and I chose to have a roast, which I thought would be bread and butter to a pub, but I have never been offered such a limp affair as the 'roast' that was put before me at the Railway tavern. This was a couple of months ago, but I remember well the defeated carrots, the sodden yorkshire pudding, the veteran beef and the dry lumpen broccoli like it was yesterday. That said, I have eaten fish and chips etc. and for pub grub I have had worse. So paddyman's verdict: avoid the roast! Service on the food was reasonable, but only just. Apart from this, the railway tavern boasts good sports screens and a lively more diverse clientele than other pubs around the area. It seems a bit of a working man's refuge from the surrounding area's city worker vibe. Nice pub this, always get served very quickly which I can't say of other pubs in the vicinity. The summer is fun standing outside the pub with your pint on a window sill watching the people go by. Handy too for the train stations. Doesn't get 5 stars because I don't really like the high stools and there's not much other seating available. read more

The only conceivable reason to come to this pub is if you are meeting a friend arriving at Liverpool Street Station, that only knows how to use the exit on Liverpool Street and who is unprepared to walk the extra 100 metres to the George or the extra 10 to the Lord Aberconway. The only commendable things about it are that it is open, it sells beer and you are unlikely to leave with a stab wound. It gets very busy but for reasons I am completely unable to fathom, possibly because of the football on TV, possibly because the clientelle have no imagination. The Railway is currently running in second place in my personal Worst Pubs In The City list. read more

This place has its pros and cons. Much like the Lord Aberconway - this locale stands as a venue for cheeky lunches. Yet the "Ivy" as it's known within my inner circle offers much more in the way of seating, televisions, and most of all: the real estate to stand outside and people watch when the weather permits. My companion works right across the street so this establishment serves as a general convergence point for both lunch and after work delights. I have eaten here a few times and I will give it the thumbs-up on the side of pub fare. read more

I was enticed here as it is the nearest pub to work that would show the rugby. It also shows Sky Sports in 3D but these are the only good words I have to say about this place. The pint I had was one third foam and tasted awful, the clients of this pub consisted of aged city workers and the dregs of society (it is also a meeting place for the BNP). I didnt know that this place does food! The things you learn on Yelp. I normally come here on a Monday night for quick pint with my joker mate who also likes to drink on the first day of the working week. the service is always really quick, and although its normally busy, most ppl have left by 7-ish. I wouldnt say it's spectacular but does the job as it is right next to the station. Once Crossrail move all the building works etc then at least it will be easier to get into! For a pub, one would expect that making pub-food would be easy and tasty.. But, alas, the burger had no flavor at all and was extremely over cooked... What a shame. Fries were good but not enough to get me to come back.. Overall the place looked more inviting from the outside and the inside was dirty and sticky. This place is always packed. If you're ever looking for an after-work scene of suits and passing travelers, this is your pub. It's a typical boozer, yes, but there are glints of some more refined touches - the wood and brassy accents are always polished, and here's a smattering of study-worthy leather sofas. This is an especially good place to watch a football match if you want massive plasma screens and the company of a sizable crowd that's not *too* rough and rowdy. I ate here tonight. It was ok. I am beginning to know what a typical English pub is like. During the happy hours -5-7, all of the pubs are jammed packed. This pub was not as busy as the surrounding ones, but we decided to go based on the pub menu. We both ate burgers tonight that were mediocre. The highlight was the duck spring rolls, they were delicious. I also did not particularly care too much for the beer. It was ok, nothing special. This place is not bad for a casual drink, maybe a quick bite. Again I didn't try to much on the menu, I am basing this basically on burgers and their sharer platter (where the duck spring roll was apart of). read more

Great hall for a small company meeting. Awesome service too. If you really listen close, you'll realize they keep making those train sounds at this place. We particularly noticed this when our director's speech was on. He was talking on the microphone and we suddenly heard a train arrive. Of course this tavern is near Liverpool Street station but it isn't that close to hear a train pass by. I went there during noon time, so it wasn't that crowded. But I expect a good crowd of professionals mostly from Liverpool Street during evenings. read more

Also keep a very good hand on your bag, as this is a busy place and full of tealeaf's (robbing scum), and the duty staff are generally not bothered, as it's your problem. read more

The Railway was always a pub for City blokes, bank clerks or senior execs. A great bloke leveller, girls sort of tagging along. Lunchtime on a Friday, a few swifties before the evening trains. Food had little to do with it. Today, if you're an outsider, eavesdrop on City conversations, their finance and sport matter-of-factness and office intrigue, and strange, busy emptiness. This pub is conveniently located near the train station, and I found the service to be friendly enough. That said, it's quite a depressing place overall - as previous reviewers accurately stated it seems to be frequented by aged city workers, passing travellers, and crazies, which can make for an interesting mix, but mostly doesn't. And they do have big TVs for watching sports. I don't really see any reason why you would want to drink here, although it does make for a convenient meeting spot. read more

Had a drink here while waiting with my in-laws for the Stansted Express from Liverpool Station. An older pub, that sadly hasn't aged well. The décor in general is a bit depressing, with large TV screens on each end of a largish room showing Sky Sports and the like. Various slot machines line one corner. The staff themselves are efficient and friendly. The bar has what looks like an OK wine selection (probably to cater for the city workers), and a pretty limited selection of beers and spirits. Railway Tavern is a pub located just outside Liverpool street station, at the intersection of Liverpool Street and Old Broad Street. It is a rather ordinary pub, but has several things going for it that i like. First of all, it shows EPL matches on SKY. That is a huge plus for fans like me who don't have a tv at home. Also the proximity to Liverpool Street station ensures that it is open on weekends, unlike most businesses in the City, and that makes it a eliable place where one can watch the league matches on Saturdays. It serves what seems like a bare minimum selection of alcoholic drinks (you can get Jack Daniels, but not Black Label). But the drinks are not pricey. I have eaten here several times, from the English breakfast in the morning to steaks and sandwiches in the afternoon. The food is good value for money and it wouldn't hurt to have lunch here while watching a match. I won't say that this pub is the best in any category, but it has proven to be quite utilatarian to me. I foresee a lot of visits here as long as I stay and work in the City. read more

Don't eat here, the food is dreadful, I had the goats chees salad and it was awful. Pick something like chips which they can't mess up if you have to. That said they have karoke on friday nights and I came here for a collegue's leaving do and had a blast. So a solid 3 stars I reckon. read more

This place is definately better than the reviews below suggest. The steak ciabata I had was reaaly good. Rare and bloody. The chips are awesome too. Good selection of lagers and ales. Plus the staff are really friendly, great atmosphere for football and the pub has an authenically ye olde tavern atmosphere. Would highly recommend! read more
