Do yourself a favor...get coffee here!!! Melancholy Roasting…read morein Ava, Missouri deserves every bit of a five‑star shoutout. The moment you walk in, you feel that perfect blend of small‑town warmth and genuine craft coffee culture. The aroma alone could fix a bad day -- rich, toasty, and clearly roasted with intention. Their beans have this depth you don't usually find outside big‑city specialty shops. Smooth, balanced, and full of character. Whether you're grabbing a simple drip or something more adventurous, everything tastes like it was made by someone who truly cares about the craft. The atmosphere is relaxed in the best way -- cozy without feeling cramped, welcoming without trying too hard. It's the kind of place where you can settle in with a book, meet a friend, or just enjoy a quiet moment with a seriously good cup of coffee. If you're anywhere near Ava, this spot is absolutely worth the stop. Melancholy Roasting is one of those rare gems that makes a town feel more like home.

I was hoping that they might have improved when they changed locations... unfortunately they did…read morenot. Service was terrible. We ordered the special (smothered pork chops), because usually service is quicker if you order the special. They were out of the majority of their meager side selection , and twenty minutes after placing our order the server came and informed us that they are out of the smothered pork chops. Fast forward twenty minutes later... still no food and none of the customers who came in before us have food yet either. I just watched a customer go in the kitchen to get a coffee pot to give herself a refill. Service here sucks. At this point I don't care if the food is amazing when it arrives, because the long wait and crappy service is not worth it. ETA : customer who was here before us got tired of waiting and got up and left before their food arrived. ETA 2 : another table just got up and walked out because they got tired of waiting. ETA 3: Definitely not worth the wait or the price. Waited an hour and ten minutes for a dry as the desert burger, a micro side of mashed potatoes with thin watery gravy, and a side of canned corn ($11.50); and overcooked chicken livers that tasted like they've never changed their fryer grease, a tiny baked potato with fake butter and burnt bacon, and a side of woody broccoli stems ($11). Didn't get a single drink refill.

He had a turkey club and I had a turkey avocado sandwich on multigrain. For sides we had cucumber salad, potato salad, and mac & cheese. A word of surprise, the potato salad is served warm, but it was really tasty. The only disappointment was the mac & cheese, which was grainy and soup-like with very overcooked noodles in it. They had no discernible shape and almost seemed like egg noodles oddly enough. We enjoyed our drinks, sandwiches and salads very much.

Such a cute, cozy place. It was like stepping into a warm cafe in another land…read more I started with a seasonal latte that had hints of toasted marshmallows, cinnamon, and pumpkin. Followed by a Monte Cristo. The bread was so light and fluffy. The saltiness of the meat with the sweetness of the bread and sugar with a little spread of raspberry preserves delighted the tastebuds. The side of fruit was large and seasonally appropriate. You order at the counter, where I think the owner was taking the orders and the accent definitely sounded authentic German like the name of the restaurant. She was lovely. Everything is made fresh so sit back and relax and the dining area is designed perfect for that with couches, cozy chairs and comfortable seats at the tables. I looked up what the name means: "Drachenfutter" is also a term used to describe gifts or treats that someone might bring home for their significant other when they feel guilty about coming home late or drunk. True to the "gift" part of the name, you can take yummy homemade treats home with you and they do have a section of gifts you can buy. A nice gem of a place along Historic Route 66.
