Do yourself a favor...get coffee here!!! Melancholy Roasting…read morein Ava, Missouri deserves every bit of a five‑star shoutout. The moment you walk in, you feel that perfect blend of small‑town warmth and genuine craft coffee culture. The aroma alone could fix a bad day -- rich, toasty, and clearly roasted with intention. Their beans have this depth you don't usually find outside big‑city specialty shops. Smooth, balanced, and full of character. Whether you're grabbing a simple drip or something more adventurous, everything tastes like it was made by someone who truly cares about the craft. The atmosphere is relaxed in the best way -- cozy without feeling cramped, welcoming without trying too hard. It's the kind of place where you can settle in with a book, meet a friend, or just enjoy a quiet moment with a seriously good cup of coffee. If you're anywhere near Ava, this spot is absolutely worth the stop. Melancholy Roasting is one of those rare gems that makes a town feel more like home.

There is a good selection of beverages and milk choices, which I greatly appreciate in a coffee shop. The iced mocha was a thing of beauty,  and tasted great.  The Italian soda was a surprising offering, and had a good flavor. I look forward to returning on my next visit to Ava.

It was a great restaurant and we decided to meet here once again. From the highway, the restaurant looked closed, with no cars in the parking lot. We soon discovered that it had moved to an old storefront location down town. The building was old, but clean. The one restroom was also a bathroom with tub and shower. We were immediately seated, served coffee, and drinks and placed our order. Several of us had omelettes with biscuits and gravy. We were served coffee and our cups were diligently kept full as we waited for our food and waited and waited and waited and waited. Finally food begin to appear one order at a time for my friends to complete their food before the next order would appear. The orders we're also served lukewarm. One friend had the Philly cheesesteak omelette. It's cheese, two slices of processed white cheese lazily placed on the top. The omelette was not hot enough to even melt the cheese. But at least one friend had ordered the vegetable and cheese omelette, which was served without cheese likewise had ordered the vegetable cheese omelette, requesting egg whites. The waitress kind of looked at me funny when I ordered egg whites. I asked if they had egg whites. She assured me that they did. But I got was a pile of egg whites, not resembling an omelette with a scoop of oily sautéed vegetables placed on top and no cheese. In fairness, the waitress did offered to bring me a slice of cheese however, I knew as cold as the omelette was there was no way it would melt and who wants cold cheese and cold eggs? In all it took over an hour for six of us to be served lukewarm food, and messed up orders. We were all very disappointed and will not be stopping here again. What was really a great restaurant when it was in its old facility clearly demonstrated its quality of food. It is no longer there keep going. You're not that far from Springfield if you're headed west and there's gotta be better , if you're headed east

What a wonderful unexpected gem we came across!! The place is super cute, service is great, and…read morefood was really good. I had a cold brew and hubby had the copper tea. He had a turkey club and I had a turkey avocado sandwich on multigrain. For sides we had cucumber salad, potato salad, and mac & cheese. A word of surprise, the potato salad is served warm, but it was really tasty. The only disappointment was the mac & cheese, which was grainy and soup-like with very overcooked noodles in it. They had no discernible shape and almost seemed like egg noodles oddly enough. We enjoyed our drinks, sandwiches and salads very much.

Such a cute, cozy place. It was like stepping into a warm cafe in another land…read more I started with a seasonal latte that had hints of toasted marshmallows, cinnamon, and pumpkin. Followed by a Monte Cristo. The bread was so light and fluffy. The saltiness of the meat with the sweetness of the bread and sugar with a little spread of raspberry preserves delighted the tastebuds. The side of fruit was large and seasonally appropriate. You order at the counter, where I think the owner was taking the orders and the accent definitely sounded authentic German like the name of the restaurant. She was lovely. Everything is made fresh so sit back and relax and the dining area is designed perfect for that with couches, cozy chairs and comfortable seats at the tables. I looked up what the name means: "Drachenfutter" is also a term used to describe gifts or treats that someone might bring home for their significant other when they feel guilty about coming home late or drunk. True to the "gift" part of the name, you can take yummy homemade treats home with you and they do have a section of gifts you can buy. A nice gem of a place along Historic Route 66.
