We had an appointment, in Mitchell & decided to give Railroad Cafe a try. It was SO worth it!!! My husband had the gianormous tenderloin sandwich, on a bun, that is 1/3 of the size (it not smaller!). He said it was excellent. Tasty & tender. I had the 2 piece cod & fries (with cole slaw). We're from Seattle & moved to Indiana a year ago. I've been craving GOOD fish & chips for a year. Railroad Cafe did the trick! They have a chalk board, at the entrance, with today's specials, and, in addition, they have an excellent menu. This little spot was a great surprise. After finishing hiking, I always like to find a local spot to check out. This place popped up and i decided to give it a try. We were immediately greeted by a friendly staff. Almost as soon as we sat down, our server was there with our menus. He was quick, knowledgable, and welcoming. We ordered the fried pickles and a couple of their specials. Their fried pickles were incredible. The perfect amount if breading that gave them a great crunch accompanied by the homemade ranch. I had the smoked sausage and sauerkraut which was delicious. The mashed potatoes on the side were smooth and creamy. The food was all around delicious. We were disappointed we didn't have room for dessert. They have a long list of homemade pies and cheesecakes of all different flavors. Next time your in the area be sure to stop in and enjoy a meal. This place has went to hell. We used to order breakfast to go from this place. It got to the point that it didn't matter what you ordered they screwed it up. Order a sausage and egg sandwich, you might get sausage you might not. Always something. We started ordering from the dogwood café in Orleans and driving the 7 miles for pick up. Haven't been to the railroad in awhile, ordered a breaded tenderloin with fries for pick up how can they screw that up? Go in pick it up and I screwed up because I didn't check it before I paid. Got home, no fries. Figures. I truly do not understand it, the place isn't that big and it's never full. I think they simply do not care. I bet this place is closed within a year. I was looking for a bakery in Mitchell, when I noticed this place and there was photo of that massive tenderloin, I'm from NE Wisconsin and they don't seem to "get" breaded tenderloins up there. Anyway, I had to order one and the tenderloin was amazing, not just super big but melt in your mouth tender. Never had one that good. The only drawback was the bun kinda disintegrated a bit, hence the drop of one star, but still a must try if you are anywhere in the vicinity. Here's a victim of Only Game in Town Syndrome. Mitchell has some chain franchises, pizza, Mexican and Asian, but when it comes to the local diner category, Railroad Cafe is pretty much it. Symptoms: slow service, corner-cutting, going through the motions. Case in point: the server didn't know the lunch specials at 2 pm. Actually turned around and tried to read the blackboard at the back of the store. Case in point: the kitchen can knock out its R and R sandwich, a grilled turkey/bacon/Swiss on Texas Toast, in the dark. But then it serves that mainstay with waffle chips clearly past their prime. Case in point: iced tea should have a bold, fresh taste, not a weak, sittin'-around-too-long taste. Railroad Cafe has an interesting menu, a great location and a community feel about it. Had breakfast here this morning. There was spacing and mask required to enter. Waitresses wore mask and throughly cleaned tables after each diner. I had the best omelette that I have ever eaten. I ordered the three egg omelette with ham, spinach, mushrooms, onions, pepper and tomatoes. Had a choice of cheeses. Our waitress recommended that I get all three of the cheeses (no extra charge). I did. It was wonderful as were the fried potatoes that came with it. Choice office biscuit or toast. My husband ordered the biscuits and gravy. SO GOOD. Real sausage and milk gravy, not a mix. Will most certainly return and will certainly spread the word. read more

This review is based on a Sunday visit at 2:00 pm one hour before closing time. Upon entering we saw a sign indicating seat yourself. Booths line each side of room. Decor was locomotive based and interesting. 50's like music played and added to the experience. Service was prompt and waitress was friendly. Food portion was large and taste was very good. That's the good news. The bad news is menu selection. We were informed Sunday's choices consisted of offered specials only and burger or tenderloin from the grill. No menus were provided and only two specials were available - fried chicken or baked spaghetti. I've never been anywhere where you only had two choices for a meal albeit she mentioned these were the specials they had "left". I'd highly suggest providing an abbreviated menu of at least the grill choices and side selections. This is a nice cafe and only one noted downtown. Well worth a stop but recommend doing so during a weekday. read more

Found this little place by accident. A little off the beaten path AKA highway 31 to French Lick and the casino. A good comfort food place. Super picky wife had her traditional healthy salad and found it very good. I had the special meatloaf, mash with gravy and corn. German chocolate cake to go. All excellent. Ordered fried eggs and bacon, when it was brought to the table it looked like the eggs were dropped on the floor and put back on the plate.

What a great diner. We were visiting family in Bloomington IN and took a side trip to Spring Mill State Park. Afterwards we were tired and hungry. This being July 4th, finding a place open that wasn't fast food was a challenge. But they were open and greeted us warmly even though there was 7 of us. The food was great and reasonably priced. The staff were tired with all of the customers they had but still served us with enthusiasm. We love going to locally owned places versus chain restaurants. You get better service and these people did not disappoint. I highly recommend giving them a chance. I can't wait to go back and sample their breakfast menu. read more

We were in town for a gig and our goal is to always choose a local establishment over a chain. The Railroad Cafe was one of the local establishments near the venue - and they have a train theme...so it was a no brainer for Rick and me. We started with an order of Jenny's Korn Krack - the menu says it's gooey, which to me, means warm and cheesy, since it has cheese in it. But it is actually cold, and not gooey at all. Plus, the menu says nothing about the dish having beans, which I cannot eat, and the second most plentiful ingredient is beans. R&R sandwich...turkey, bacon, avocado and Swiss on toasted bread...the bread was a little bit greasy, but it wasn't dripping, so it could have been worse. The homemade chips were quite good - they remind me of Ruffles. Cheesecake - really good...It didn't seem to be homemade, but I could be wrong. read more

Home of persimmon pudding and fun times. This small cafe was quite delicious and had a good variety on its menu. My fiancée enjoyed a burger on a glazed donut and airy fried chips. I enjoyed their roast beef and fries which were spot on. The quantity was more than enough. Their kid's tenderloin was the size of my head. We stopped at the Railroad Cafe for lunch based upon the recommendations of some locals. They suggested that we try the tenderloin which was one of the specials. It was HUGE. We asked to split the tenderloin which they did for us and each half was as big as the plate. The brownie Sunday was good...warm brownie topped with ice cream, and whipped cream. The service was very prompt although when we went it was already past the peak lunch hour. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and specials. This was our first visit. We'd been hearing about this place for a while and even knew of someone who worked here. The food was good. I had the Vanderbilt sandwich, which was advertised as "mounds of roasted beef, caramelized onions, horseradish sauce...with au jus..." I wouldn't have called it mounds. It definitely could have used more beef and onions and there was no au jus at all. The taste was wonderful, I just wish it had been a bit bigger. I would have paid more to get a bigger sandwich. I was a little dismayed when I saw the menu and several items had been scratched out, as though they were no longer offered. I think it's fine to change up the menu now and then, but have it reprinted, rather than just scratching it out. There's just something off-putting about taking things away. Service was OK. We visited a few hours before the dinner hour and there were only a few people in the restaurant. It seemed to take a while before our meal, consisting of sandwiches, came out. My initial impression of the place is that they've lost their momentum a bit. When they first opened, they were new and novel for the area and now they've kind of lost their steam. I know it's tough to own a restaurant in an economically depressed area, but focus on a few key items and I'm sure they'll be fine. I think we might try coming for breakfast next time. read more

A perfectly quaint little place for those of you who love small town diners / cafes /mom and pop places. I am certainly one of those people. Great service, tasty food (I had the meatloaf special). My co-worker had the R&R sandwich with chips. I had to steal a chip, since they were quite unique, like a waffle fry. They were very good. I will definitely be returning. Time to go back to work. For Sunday lunch, I had a huge fried chicken breast (looked like half a chicken, way more than I could eat), mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, and a roll, all for $8.99. My companion had chicken dumplings, mashed potatoes, green beans, and a roll, same price. Another option at that price point was baked ham. The coffee was good. It came in a huge mug and they had flavored (French vanilla) creamer. The place is decorated nicely. It's very warm and quaint, with toy trains and neutral colors. It was very cozy on a cold November afternoon. The lights are just right: not too bright or dark. It is a good place to take a date or the whole family. This is a cute place! Had lunch here with some friends. I had the daily special...grilled tenderloin and it was fabulous. I also tried the Korn Krack and that was a nice surprise. Very tasty dip with tortilla chips. They had a seafood platter for a mere 12.99. Our service was great and the parking on the street was free. They have Coke products and I had unsweetened tea also delicious. My friend had the RnR and her plate was empty... she commented on the turkey that it tasted "smoked". We arrived at 10:50 a.m. The cafe was about 3/4 full but it took the server 5 minutes to take our drink order (coffee & hot tea). At 11:00 sharp we tried to order breakfast. We were shut down. Told breakfast stopped being served at 11. I ordered the special, catfish for lunch. Also, asked for a spoon to stir my coffee and internet password. Server returned sometime later and said catfish was frozen so no longer available. Never gave me the password (she said she would have to write it down but never returned with the info) and we ask another server for the spoon. By that time I had lost my appetite. On the plus side: my husband enjoyed his special - pork tenderloin sandwich and server did ask, "What did I do wrong?" Service was NOT good! But she took critique rather well. I got up and left. Owner: please advise servers that your business survives by having little things promised, like spoons delivered promptly & internet access provided. And if Specials are on the Specials Board, they should be available. Also, keep the customers happy. Serve them breakfast at 11:00 am if menu states breakfast is served until 11:00 am. This is usually the beginning of the demise of of most restaurants unfortunately. Not the food quality per si, but the poor quality of service. Time for another training session for entire staff.
