The breaded tenderloin is the best I've had since Sir Walter's in Indy shut down. It was a hair above Muldoon's in Carmel. This one is great. They must start with a 3/4 - 1" slice of loin and they don't go crazy with the hammer. It's still 1/4 - 3/8" under the right amount of crispy breading. Service was great, the place is cool. If I could give them 10 stars, I would! Our server, Annabelle, was wonderful! She was friendly, efficient, and got all of the details right, so we definitely appreciated her! Everything we ordered was wonderful. I got the Breaded Pork Tenderloin and fries (which is what they are known for and why we went there in the first place), and it was quite possibly the best one I've ever had. My mom got a Philly Cheesesteak and onion rings, both of which were excellent. We also both got desert and meatloaf dinners to take home, and while we haven't eaten those yet, they look great and smell divine! If you get anything dippable, don't miss out on their homemade ranch dipping sauce (thanks for the tip, Annabelle!), you'll thank me later! Super fun railroad decor throughout (as you might have guessed from the name). We thought everything was very readonably priced, especially with the portion sizes (our bill was right around $75 for FOUR meals, 2 drinks, and 2 deserts). Came here while staying at Spring Mill State Park. Saw this place on Yelp and decided to try it out. We had their specials. I got their Grilled Tenderloin with fries. My lovely wife had their Chicken and Noodles with green beans. Both were exceptionally cooked and plenty on the plate. The place is very clean with TONS of railroad memorabilia all over the walls. There was one picture of a hometown resident maybe not as memorable as the towns most memorable resident Gus Grissom he is Sam Bass. A train robber bank robber who was gunned down by Texas Rangers in my hometown of Round Rock, Texas. We even had a street named after him. Imagine that! Don't have these in Kentucky so I traveled up to get one. Met my cousins there and it took her 3 hrs to get there we agree this is the best tenderloin we've had in a long time. They don't hide the taste of it with a lot of spices. The meat is thick and juicy. Will go back read more

What a cute quaint place! A little café of Time gone by. Completely decorated with railroad memorabilia, something to look at everywhere you turn. The waitresses were friendly and informative. They made our whole experience something to remember. Of course we had to have their world famous humongous tenderloin. We split one and added a bun, as you see in the picture. Which of course we cut again in half and had lots of leftovers for two more lunches. The batter was perfect, and the tenderloin itself was not too thin as they sometimes are when they're this big it was very moist and meaty! Perfection really! They seem to have lots of other things on the menu that we also love to try if we were in this area. They also had a very large selection of desserts. My husband loved their persimmon pudding, which most places never serve. Definitely a five star experience and we will always return when in the area! read more

We found this place looking for a new place to try on Yelp. Was a little bit of a drive but totally worth it. To say the portions are large is an understatement. This was the largest tenderloin I've ever seen. It was delicious. The service was excellent. They have daily specials, today was meatloaf, mashed potatoes and green beans also a marinaded pork chop mashed potatoes with cajun gravy. They have house made desserts. After a day of touristing on a Sunday the wife and I decided to have lunch at a local eatery while in Mitchell, IN. A quick Yelp search revealed the Railroad Café & Lounge. It was also about the only local restaurant opened that day so it made the choice pretty easy. The Railroad Café & Lounge is a "take a seat anywhere you like" kind of place, so we decided to sit in the side dining room. We sat for quite a while before anyone came over to us. By "quite a while" I mean close to 20 minutes. Two other tables that came in after us got service nearly right away. I don't know why we were largely ignored. The restaurant is Railroad decorated, and nicely so. Train signs, pictures, models, lanterns, and paintings we were place all throughout the dining room. I love trains, especially vintage railroadery, and I LOVED the theming. Our server finally came to use to see what we wanted. By now we had looked at the menu long enough to know what we wanted, so we ordered everything right up front. I ordered a taco salad and my wife had a salad as well. We didn't order an appetizer, we were ready for food. But we had to wait again. We had to wait over 15 minutes for our food after waiting nearly 20 minutes to get any service at all. Meanwhile there was one table that came in, ordered, got their food, and left in the amount of time we sat at our table. The salads finally arrived and were largely portioned. They were good, but not remarkable. The tortilla chips came from a bag and the salsa was clearly from a jar. It was very filling, though, so at least I didn't walk away hungry. Railroad Café & Lounge is about a local and neighborhood as a restaurant can be. The menu was extensive and it's very nicely themed, but on our visit the service (that is to say, the speed of service) wasn't exactly moving us down the tracks. So if you're trying to eat healthy I'd pass. However if you don't mind indulging in crazy portions and fried deliciousness this is the place for you. The place was packed, but service was great. You can tel it's a locals spot. We ordered fried pickles for the table and they were great, they actually tasted like pickles. I got the fried chicken liver special with green beans and potatoes. I think it was around 11.00 and I only ate half, so left overs will be had. My son got the fish sandwich, my mom got the train wreck salad and the two guys got the tenderloin sandwich which was massive and thick. My family and I stopped in here while we were in the area to try something new. I got the club sandwich with chips. It was decent but the average of a three stars wife got a fish sandwich. She said it was decent. My mom got a cheeseburger same thing everybody gave their food to two or three stars. Visiting Spring Mill State Park, which happened to be "under construction", with restaurant within the park "closed", a couple of friends and myself left the park tired and hungry. We got out our iphone and searched for the nearest place for lunch/dinner. Railroad Cafe came up so that's how we ended up there. The ambiance as we walked inside was small time diner. The Staff were very polite and helpful. We asked for recommendations, which lead us to our order. 1 grilled Tenderloin sandwich, 1 fried Tenderloin sandwich, and 1 Chicken Salad. My friend and I stopped here for dinner today. We both ordered a tenderloin and fries. Out fries were soggy. The tenderloin was undercooked and beyond salty. Neither one of us could eat it. Excellent local restaurant! Stopped in for lunch while exploring the nearby state park for the weekend. It was packed, and for good reason! You could tell most of the patrons were locals and regulars. Expansive menu with reasonable prices and something for everyone, as well as daily specials. Very enticing dessert area up front that everyone seemed to visit (yes, including us!) Great theming and decor throughout the restaurant as well! Bathroom was decorated nicely but hard to keep clean as there is only 1 and lots of people coming in and out. Service was great! The food is great. Ate here for the first time for supper and loved the place. We came back the next day on our way home and came to the conclusion that we should have just gone to McDonald's. Stumbled across this gem this past weekend. A group of us when there for a late b'fast/early lunch. I had the b'fast pizza. So good - but I tried a bite of my sister's breaded tenderloin. WOW!!! THAT is what to get there!! So we went back the next day and nearly all of us got the breaded tenderloin. It's enormous and amazing. Service was excellent both trips as well. We will be back next time we're up that way for sure! read more

Light breading, buttery pickles, with a solid ranch sauce. Would order again. Korn krack was a cold mix of corn, tomatoes, black beans in cream. Interesting concept but wouldn't order again. Breaded Pork Tenderloin Sandwich - as ridiculously large as it appears in the picture. Come hungry or be prepared to split it. Thick tenderloin in a light breading jokingly sandwiched in a bun with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. Crinkle fries are solid and the onion rings got good reviews too. Clear winner for lunch sandwiches. The Vanderbilt was the polar opposite experience. The meat was paper thin, but stale and crunchy as if left under the heat lamp. There was very little sauce or onions and it did not come with the normal dipping broth. It was embarrassingly bad, but fortunately unnecessary since we ended up having to split the tenderloin anyway. 2 out of 4 isn't great but they did have a clear winner with the tenderloin and the price points and service are good. I'd come back to try the donut burger or explore their breakfast menu. read more

This is a pretty good diner. I had a veggie omelette with mushrooms, onions, and green peppers, with a bagel and cream cheese on the side. It was just enough for me without being too much (usually a problem for me with places having huge portion sizes, it was only a 2 egg omelette). I tried my aunt's home fries, and they were fresh cut, crispy but not fried too hard, and had a great flavor. Honestly the home fries are what brought the review up to five stars. This place is known for its pork tenderloin sandwich - it is out of this world! it's on a regular size bun, but the tenderloin is almost as big as the plate. It is perfectly breaded and fried. Simply delicious. We also tried the burger with donuts as buns. It was also very good. The burger was still juicy but not undercooked. The fried pickles and onion rings were also very tasty. My nephew and his wife really enjoyed the Korn Krack dip. The decor is railroad themed honoring the railroad that once ran through the area and the engineers. It is a very small local diner. They are busy during traditional lunch hours (11:00-1:00). If you arrive before or after, you're more likely to find a seat. I've not been there for breakfast. When we are in the area we MUST stop here for the tenderloin sandwich. read more

A HIDDEN TREASURE! Having checked out of the Spring Mill Campground, we checked with Google Maps for the nearest breakfast restaurant. We wanted a reasonably priced venue offering good, old-fashioned home cooking. WE.WERE.NOT.DISAPPOINTED! It was a weekday morning and we were warmly greeted by Sarah who offered an explanation as to the history of the restaurant. The previous owner was a fan of local railroad history and the entire restaurant is adorned with railroad memorabilia. It is beautiful! The menu featured a plethora of breakfast offerings, so much so that it took us many minutes to decide. Our omelet was huge(!) and hosted such flavor! Accompanied by home fries and toast, we were set for the day. As we were leaving, we were sorry that we couldn't come back for their dinner menu. Sarah was sure to tell us that they are renowned for their dinner plate sized breaded tenderloins. We now know that if we're anywhere near to Mitchell in the future, we will return to the Railroad Cafe. On a final note... for those who seek GOOD(!) home cooking presented with an old-fashioned, hometown smile - get yourselves to the Railroad Cafe in Mitchell, Indiana. You'll thank me!
