One of my biggest regrets was not trying a few spots while I lived in Lubbock; Red Raider Meats was one of the places. I came to visit a friend and vowed to try some meats out. I bought sausage and some beef fajitas. When I tell you this was the best meat I've ever had...it was the best meat I EVER had. The sausage was juicy, flavorful, and everything you want in a sausage. Like I don't even like sausage that much?! The beef fajitas were marinated---I can't recall what it was marinated in, but all I know is I think about it at least once a day..and it's been months since I've been! I will definitely be stopping by here next time I'm visiting the city or may honestly buy some online and gets some meats shipped! I also recommend checking or asking about their specials as we were able to get our sausages for $2! read more

Went in yesterday and was greeted right away. The staff here is great. Pretty good variety of meats available and at great prices as well. They also have a grill here as well. I ordered a cheeseburger with fries. The fries were easily some of the best Ive had in town. The cheeseburger had way too much seasoning for my taste, so it was a no for me. COWamongus is the best campus dinning at Texas Tech. But it also opens to the public so deff make sure you come visit! It is located in the Animal and Food Sciences building across the street from the United Spirit Arena. They specialize in beef and dairy products (if you can't tell by their name) and have a small cafe for lunch. This is not your average campus dinning. It is an initiative of innovative partnership between the Animal and Food Sciences department at Texas Tech and one of its alumni. Because of the expertise of the Animal and Food Sciences, everything is made and processed in house in the building. Even the cool cow chairs at the cafe were made in-house. How awesome is that?! I came here at least once a week with co-workers when I worked for the university. I usually just walk here since the law school building is so close. However, the wind in LBK can be crazy so I even had to drive a few times. I once got a parking ticket here and was unsuccessful with disputing it. So parking can be a little tricky. They have different daily specials but my favorite has always been the Philly Cheesesteak. I've been to Philly and think this is even better than those I had in Philadelphia. It really is that good! It comes with a side of fries or tater tots and a drink. If you request though, they will substitute the fries/tater tots to a small salad. And I always get the salad b/c it is healthy and delicious! I've heard so much about their ice cream and still wonder to this day why I never tried it. Kicking myself now. They also have high quality beef and other meats for sale. Price is always reasonable for the finest product you get. One of my coworkers regularly buys meats from COWamongus and raves about it! I was too lazy to cook. Otherwise I'd deff have gotten something here. Now I don't live in LBK any longer, I still miss Cowamongus fondly and wish the university I currently work had something like this! read more

This is a review in praise of Raider Red Meats Original BBQ Sauce (I am reading from the bottle label). I have been watching YouTube videos on using a slow cooker to BBQ chicken. Most of the videos show the cook (often a guy) take out a package of chicken breasts, drumsticks, or thighs, arrange them in the slow cooker, and pour a whole bottle of BBQ sauce over and walk away for 2 or 3 hours. The end of the video has him tasting the result and claiming how good it is. I am just over 80, retired, and maintaining a keto-like low carb diet (I just lost 30 pounds and I want to keep it off). I also have begun to take up cooking as a retirement project and I wanted to try it. The problem is what BBQ sauce. I stood in front of the BBQ sauce section at Market Street (50th & Indiana) in awe at the number of choices. Since I could not open a bottle to smell or taste, I checked the labels for sugar. Many of them were 9 to 15 grams, but the Raider BBQ sauce caught my eye: Only 4 grams. Decision made. But what about the flavor? Do I have to use the whole bottle? Did I make a good choice? Back home at the ranch, I carefully poured about 1/3 bottle over my drumsticks and waited 3 hours. Not bad, but not salty enough for me. So today I put in thighs over a bed of sliced onion, seasoned them with garlic salt and onion salt and this time shortened my cooking time to from 3 hours to 2 1/2 hours on high. Pulled out the thighs, pulled them apart with two forks, and pored the juice over them. It was perfect. I pored just a little more sauce over the pulled chicken to intensify the flavor and ate them as is although my YouTube teachers recommend them over rice, noodles or bread (remember, my diet). The Raider Red Meats BBQ sauce should be considered by all over-80 retired guys who are now puttering around the kitchen looking for something that looks to others as complicated and maybe even mysterious, but is, in fact, easy. read more

This place is pretty cool. It is kind of hard to find, the best way is to think of it as across from the United Spirit Arena. The building has cow statues in front of it. Park on the left side and walk in through the glassed-in atrium (no signage outside, there is a horse statue). The Raider Red Meat shop is inside on the left, the COWamongus is the name of the cafe part of the shop. There is 45 minute guest parking in the front of the lot. There is a little cafe inside with students eating there, but I was there for the meat! The Tech students raise their own animals and butcher them, and they sell the meat here. It is quite affordable based on the per pound rate compared to United stores, and they sometimes have specials. I had the Tailgate Special, which for $60 came with 10 lbs ground beef, 16 sirloin steaks, 2 big packages of sausage, and lamb kabobs. They also have pork and goat meat for sale, aged steaks, blueberry sausage, leg of lamb, lamb ribs, flank steak, ribeyes, brisket, new yokr strip, ham, roasts, prime rib, tenderloins, etc. all packaged and frozen. Also some pre-cooked stuff and beef jerky. They have a FaceBook page and a website that you can check for sales. UPDATE: I've been back and tried the homemade ice cream and the turkey sandwich with chipotle mayo. Both were EXCELLENT. The ice cream is way better than that Sheridan's place. The options are limited. Mainly just sandwiches/burgers. The waffle fries were stale. Philly cheese steak was good. The meat used in it was quality meat. Fries were just very disappointing as I hardly ever eat fries. So when j do, I want to really enjoy them. These weren't good at all. Price was average. Not great value, but not too expensive. It's great to support TTU and their great agri-work. It just doesn't make sense what in 2016 one still uses nitrites and TTU still does in its processed meats. They say they need to finish off their beef with grains. I'd prefer a purer even if less tasty beef if purely grass fed. Same ol' CSR and mgr. Droll as ever. Good selection of meats including goat. I've got a class right next to COWamongus and I always smell something delicious coming from this restaurant. So, I got to class early to grab a breakfast burrito. I walk in and the big guy working there doesn't acknowledge me or my friend as we're waiting for our orders to be taken. Another guy walks up to the counter, the guy working there clearly knows him and strikes up a conversation. The guy working says something about "the grill not working" and how "the flame went out." He finally gets around to us and I ask for two burritos. Before I can finish, he interrupts me saying that they're completely out of burritos and that I can't get any because the grill isn't working. I was just appalled at how poor the customer service was at such an amazing school. This is not the first time this same guy has been rude and short with me and I will not be returning to this place if he's there. read more

Zero stars if I could. Cool idea, but the manager needs an attitude adjustment. Service: When I first heard of this place, I was excited to support a unique part of Texas Tech University's Animal Science Department. However, after a few times of going there, I have realized that I am not considered a customer, but a burden. The majority of the staff seem to constantly be running around working their butts off to serve their customers, but every time I have gone there, the manager plants himself at the register to take orders and talks to the customers like they are bothering him. This guy needs a refresher course in customer service. Most recently, I walked up to the counter and asked for a milkshake. I was told point-blank, "I can't do that, I'm too busy right now to go over and make one." Really?! What happened to "the customer is always right"??? I've decided I can take my money and business elsewhere. I'll be a student here for 2 more years at least, and they have now alienated me for good. I won't go there. If this establishment knows what is good for them, they will ditch this guy and hire someone that knows how to bring in and keep customers. Food: Average to Good. Nothing special, but the meat is fresh and the prices are reasonable. They have the standard salads, burgers, and sandwiches. From my understanding, they slaughter their own meat and use it, which is cool. They also make their own ice cream. I wish they would team up with the Agriculture department and maybe have fresh veggies to serve with their fresh meat, but instead, the sides are just the standard frozen tater tots and fries. UPDATE: Went there AGAIN to see if they could redeem themselves after my last bad encounter, but yet again, the manager refused me service. The lady in front of me tried to order the special on the board and he told her "no, you can't have that, sorry. Someone just ordered the last one." Crap service ruins the whole place. read more

Management: This guy needs to go! The manager has a really really bad attitude towards just about everything, and isn't afraid to demonstrate it to the rest of the world. His mentality towards customer service is terrible to say the least as myself and numerous acquaintances have been treated with hostility whenever we approach him about problems with our meal or service. In addition to that I've heard him on numerous occasions belittle employees in public. As example there have been numerous instances where he directs comments such as, "you're stupid" or "that's a really dumb idea." Couple that with several instances I've overheard of sexual harassment directed at the female employees (Ex. "Close your legs! It smells like eggs in here!") and there is very little desire to order food there. It's also blatantly obvious that he is a micromanager because he is constantly barking orders to the employees, but never actually pitches in to help when a rush is on. Fire him and you would have a great place for people to come dine. Prices: These used to be reasonable but have recently gone through the roof. Paying $7.50 after tax for a panini sandwich that only includes a very small sandwich and a small handful of fries/tots is outrageous. I don't know who makes up these prices for the food but that's ridiculous and needs to be evaluated ASAP, or else people are going to start going to places like Sonic where at least they don't feel cheated. Food: The quality of the food fantastic overall. Right now the only saving grace of this establishment is the variety of options available. Meat Sales: Love Raider Red meats!
