My husband and I attended the Killer Queen concert recently. We love the theater and are big fans!…read moreIt's much easier driving into West Chester than Philadelphia, the parking is cheap/free, and the neighborhood is safe. Everyone at the theater is so welcoming, and we walked in without a wait or any lines for the restrooms. So, what was the problem? Some audience members were out of control and/or intoxicated. Thankfully, we were on the second level, but right in front of us on the first level, we witnessed two fights. One started when one of the audience members who was visibly under the influence kept standing and holding up his beer. At one point, I believe he spilled beer on a patron and a fight ensued. The unhappy couple who had the beer spilled on them walked out, and no one from the theater came over to handle the situation. Shortly thereafter, another man from the same group started yelling at a woman who was seated. He stood over her wildly gesturing as if ready to strike her while a patron seemed to try to grab his arm from behind. Audience members kept looking back to see if anyone was going to address this situation. By the way, this all happened during the show which was extremely distracting and distressing. Finally, the theater manager came over to escort the man and his friends away. However, the man came back and tried to go back to his seat. Again, he had to be escorted away. If the theater is going to continue to serve alcohol, they will need to hire security particularly during shows similar to this one--and not just a theater manager. This is needed to keep their audience members safe and to continue to ensure a quality experience.

Pssst....want to know the BEST kept secret on the Main Line? Renting the hall at the Palombaro…read moreClub (AKA "The Big Club") for your next event. The Palombaro Club is one of two private social clubs in Ardmore. They are both on the same block of County Line Road, hence the name "Big Club" (the other club, the IACCA, is the "Little Club" because it's 1/3 the size). They have been here for a very long time, easily 40 years or more. The venue itself has an upper floor with a large hall, stage, long bar and catering kitchen. There's also a coat room and restrooms in the vestibule. The space with catering tables could hold 75 with a dance floor, 100 - 125 without a dance area. It is clean, well kept, not 'elegant' but also not 'tacky'. There are two flat screen TVs above the bar, for us we had them broadcast the playoff game which made folks happy. There is no smoking permitted in the large hall. The lower level is the social club with a larger bar, smaller tables, much more of a bar/club environment (people do smoke cigarettes down there, but you could not smell or hear anything from downstairs when on the upper floor). They sometimes will rent that out (Superbowl party, anyone?). This is a club run by the members, Charlie is the 'coordinator' for rentals, he is a sweet, straight-talking guy who works professionally as a glazer. He can be a bit hard to get and is not always at the club, but he is a seriously nice and accommodating man. They do not have a website or a club email, you call the club and ask for Charlie. He does return calls pretty quickly. Now the BEST part? Almost shamefully inexpensive. Your party dollar will go far with them. They supply a bartender and the alcohol (you can specify what options you want to offer, they run an open tab for you or you can cash bar). You supply the caterer, they do not have restrictions on who can be brought in, and you supply the entertainment (band, DJ, iPod). Plus, you're supporting a longstanding social club in the area. We had a wonderful event there and will definitely be back!

While it's a bit of a trek for us, it's the perfect halfway point to meet up with friends. My husband and I enjoyed the red wine flight and ended up sharing a bottle of the Shiraz, which was drinkable and good. The food menu is surprisingly extensive--whether you're looking for a full meal or just some tapas to pair with your wine, they've got you covered. We didn't eat this time since we weren't hungry, but everything looked and smelled fantastic. The owners are welcoming and knowledgeable, which added to the great experience. My only complaint is the corkage fee if you choose to enjoy a bottle on-site. This is only the second time I've ever encountered a corkage fee at a tasting room, and we've visited many across some of the world's most renowned wine regions. It's a bit puzzling, especially in a relaxed setting like this. None of the Pennsylvania wineries do this but this tasting room and a tasting room in West Chester do and it's really obnoxious. But the good news is the prices at this tasting room are affordable and they don't charge a credit card fee! That said, we'd definitely come back. Great wine, great atmosphere, and a lovely place to spend an afternoon.

All of the wines are produced from California grapes in the Sonoma and surrounding region. Of the two whites they were pouring the Rousanne was our favorite (We took a bottle home). Enjoyed the Reds as well, I think they are very tightly structured with some good tannins so they need a little aging time to put their best foot forward. Of the Reds my favorite was the final one - a 2015 petite Syrah that was quite Jammy- consistent with a California style. Price wise they're similar to some of the other top end wineries in our region such as Va La. I will say that we had some truly outstanding cheese with our wine that comes from the same area as the wine was produced. We also took away cheese and charcuterie board to share with folks we were visiting. Both boards were really outstanding- And I will tell you that I am picky on that front. They offer a great "west coast style" wine tasting experience. Obviously it doesn't involve PA wines - but theses are still craft wines that deliver good value. A return visit is warranted...
