    Welcoming sign.

This is a rundown hotel in a rundown part of the city. Rugs are stained. Bathrooms are in poor shape. Hallways smell of cheap antiseptic and stale air. There is no fitness suite. No pool. The surroundings are urban blight; the attached office building is unoccupied and decrepit. Room service menu is overpriced and very limited. Parking lot is not maintained. Signs to the hotel are vandalized. To walk anywhere means going through dirty neighborhoods. Radisson normally is a reliable group. Not this time. Stay anywhere else in Belfast.

    Stains on walls, etc.

Of all the venues we enjoyed during our 14 day CIE "Jewels of Ireland" tour, this is the only accommodation we regretted. This place was a disgrace, given the variety of stains on carpeting, walls, closet doors, etc. The odors rising from the green "moat" surrounding the building left a distinct odor of sulfur wafting thru our rooms. I would avoid this venue at all costs when visiting Belfast.

On a gorgeous July evening, the four of us (wife, two girls and I) dined in the glorious Belfast Radisson hotel restaurant called The Gasworks Restaurant and Bar. The hotel is set in the Gasworks in Belfast, an area which has undergone a lot of regeneration over the last twenty years. It was a very busy place in bygone days, keeping Belfast lit-one can see the icons in the signage. The logo is very striking and the style and typing font is very period appropriate. There are plenty of seats in the bar, outside along the lakeside, inside and in the private booths, which we opted for. The Radisson Hotels used to house the Filini Italian restaurants in all their UK hotels and it was great to see that Belfast broke away from the generic replacement and generated the Gasworks Restaurant and Bar. The menu offers a superb selection of all kinds of food from breakfast through lunch and into an amazing evening menu, with meals to satisfy all appetites and the superb thing is that it's all on a one sided menu!! The restaurant is very child friendly and offers a very good explorers pack to keep the kids occupied, also for residents all kids eat free. Fresh baked seeded bread and butter was also served. For starters we chose the large king prawn and calamari tempura sharing platter and my older daughter had a large seafood chowder, whilst the younger one had chicken fillets with corn on the cob and skinny fries (kids menu). The tempura was lightly battered and crisp and fish was perfect. The chowder was creamy and had plenty of fish and potatoes. The chicken, fries and corn went down a treat!! For mains I had the most delicious monkfish with apple and radish salad and mayo served with an onion ring side. My wife had the chicken and noodle broth. We both thoroughly enjoyed the dishes and were amazed about the portion size of the noodle dish, the monkfish was just right also. The fish was meaty, juicy and succulent and cooked to perfection. The seasoning was slightly salt heavy else two perfect dishes. To finish the girls devoured a strawberry and chocolate ice cream, while my wife and I shared a vanilla mocha. The ambience of the restaurant was superb and all the staff were expertly trained. The attention to detail was amazing-example being the place setting napkin was a thick tissue based one whilst the napkins given for main course were white cloth. This is certainly a restaurant which is ideal for special celebrations but is equally good for romantic meals and is very child friendly. There is onsite car parking which is free if one dines or stays in the hotel. A big thank you to all the staff at the hotel/restaurant for making our evening memorable.

On Saturday, I was in the Gasworks area to visit The Meter House as part of the European Heritage Open Day and I had time for lunch before heading to Stormont Castle for another EHOD visit. I called in to the Gasworks Bar at Radisson Blu for lunch and ordered a small seafood chowder for starter, followed by veggy noodles. The noodles were nice and I think the choowder was particularly nice, with aromatic seeds in it. The chowder was served with some very substantial bread rolls, which I would presume to be sourdough. That was my first visit. I don't normally have reason to be in the gasworks but this was a nice find.

I stayed in the Radisson last year for one night and was very impressed. I booked a room with a friend who was up showing some paintings in a local art gallery and we got a great deal on a twin room through a discount hotel website. The room was amazing! So sleek and stylish looking, we could hardly believe we'd gotten it for the price we did (approx. £20 each!). The people at reception were very friendly and had my taxi waiting for me the following morning and were very helpful with their wake-up call service. I remember being uber impressed by the underfloor heating in the bathroom, so luxurious. I also remember the magnifying mirror, which was surrounded by intense lights and magnified every imperfection on your face so much it made you think you were some sort of hideous monster. Warning to all girls, just don't look!! You will regret it! This hotel is a very handy place to stay, a ten minute walk from town and stunning views at night. Comes highly recommended. Oh yeah and to save time, we ate in the restaurant downstairs. I had the best mushroom risotto I've ever tasted. My friend got a veggie pizza which was also delectable. Worth staying in for the food alone!

There is a gated parking lot. The hotel is located to many different restaurants, and it's also a quick walk to the city center. The shower drain was very slow. Even after putting in a request, it wasn't fixed during the duration of our stay. I requested extra blankets & pillows. It took the staff much too long to deliver the items. I had to go down to the front desk to request the items again. The rooms were clean & the bed was considerable. Overall, the stay was pleasant. However, the staffing needs to be held more accountable.

Cheap and cheerful Pros: The room was clean and smelled of fresh laundry. The carpark construction has finished and there was enough space to park quickly and securely and HIE is one of the very few hotels in the city that has a private carpark. The shower was clean and worked well Friendly staff all the way, I asked for a spare duvet and it was delivered swiftly, even though it was late in the evening, same with towels etc... Some food is available 24/7 Cons: The double bed was a joke. There is no way for two adults to get a comfortable sleep on such a tiny bed, I had to use the pull-out sofa so at least one of us would get some sleep. We're no giants either. Definitely a big minus and a reason I will not be coming back, unless I'm on my own. The soap in the bathroom is fixed to the wall and very cumbersome to use, the same one in the shower has been empty on arrival and for the last two days, housekeeping staff have been in and out on both days... There is no wardrobe or drawers in the whole room, not even the bedside tables have drawers, all your stuff is therefore either out in the open or stays in the luggage. On the fence: The breakfast was ok, but the apple juice was diluted to a point it should be called a drink not juice. The eggs have absolutely zero taste... No vegetable (not even a fried tomato) just beans and mushrooms... I appreciate that it was included, but again, you get what you pay for and this one is nothing to write home about, but does the job. Verdict: if you can get a good rate, it's a good choice. It is what it is...a cheap hotel with modern facilities with everything "just enough". If you're just passing through the city on business or traveling on a budget and if the rate is low, good choice. If you're going for a weekend away with a loved one, pay a bit more and enjoy a bit of luxury, you're not going to find it here. And again... The bed sucks!

But it was such a small room the beds were too close together and we had to walk sideways in between the beds. There was no dresser so we had to live out of a suitcase on the floor for a week. The room overall appeared clean except for the phone cord had a thick layer of dust in between the loops. (You could clearly see it.) The bathroom. The walk in shower was nice with a rain shower and separate handheld. The water temperature was super hot. Way too hot and room would fog up. Because the shower is open to the door, the door had major water damage and was swollen and couldn't be closed all the way. The door jam was also had water damage. Aesthetically unappealing. The restaurant was very nice and the food was good. The staff were super nice about food orders. Enjoyed the meals. Some of the staff (front desk, restaurant and housekeeping) were very nice and others not as much. But overall the nice staff outweighed the not as nice staff. Location is close to City Hall and Donegall Square which is what I wanted. And it was centrally located within walking distance to a lot in the area.

The building is located near a small cluster of pubs, restaurants and fast food outlets. Check in was not the best... After driving for several hours to Belfast and arriving late-ish and hungry the gentleman manning the reception didn't greet us with a smile and chose to take an incoming phone call prior to giving us our keycard. Understandable that at that time the reception is only manned by one person but placing the caller on hold for a few moments to see us sorted wouldn't hurt. Being the first impression for the property its ultimately important (and hardly expensive) for the receptionist to smile for guests. I did however manage to get half a smile out the man the next morning. The common areas of the hotel appeared to be more recently updated than the rooms and corridors, however many furnishings were worn. The corridor could do with a lick of paint and renewed carpet as the existing fittings are well worn/marked. Room furnishings were a bit plain and not like those advertised on the website. Beds were comfortable. No air conditioning (in our room anyway) - not a problem in December but consider this if you are staying over summer. The bathroom was fine, with a good strong shower. The water saving tap on the sink was a bit ridiculous as you need to run the tap for about a minute for the water to get warm. Breakfast included the usual hot options of full Irish with cereal, yoghurt, fruits and breads. Tea and brewed coffee supplied to the table by friendly staff. Overall an OK stay, the property could do well to make some updates to furnishings, and perhaps some extra training for one of the reception staff. Parking is 5 quid overnight which is a bit much considering street parking is available all around - however we were given free parking validation on checkout which was a nice gesture. Free WiFi is also available and was accessible from the rooms as well as the common areas, with the occasional drop out. I've stayed in much better 4-star hotels elsewhere so the money I would probably try somewhere else next time to Belfast.

It's a lot bigger inside than you realise, with various function rooms and an expansive lounge and bar/restaurant area, serving those staying in the hotel, and business folks and travellers passing through. The reception staff were very helpful, and the function I attended was well sign-posted and easy to find - there was a constant supply of tea and coffee, pastries and muffins, as well as orange juice and water. The food we had was lovely too, piping hot and tasty, and we were given a full three courses for lunch - unusual for an event like that, I thought. All in all, the hotel is pleasant and inviting and seems well run and professional. I can't speak for the hotel rooms, but the main areas of the hotel were all clean and well-maintained. There is plenty of parking for patrons also.
