A family affair had us here. 3 days, 4 rooms, half board. Big, cosy rooms, large TV, tea & instant coffee & tasty, butter shortcake biscuits. Check in friendly & fast. Two rooms ready at 2pm. We're a taxing lot all the time. Staff met lots of our needs most all the time with a smile. Soon after arrival we lunched, 10 including a baby. Genuine open & welcoming staff; our kids ate free on our half board deal. Most of the food was to our taste. Any criticisms (we're a critical lot) were dispelled by genuinely friendly staff who treated us so well from arrival to we left. Post lunch we were off to the pool & steam bath. Both deserve mention. We got big luxury towels. Pool & steam bath ace perfect. The damp heat temperature meant this is the best steam bath I've had for as long as I recall. I enjoyed it hugely. Pool heat was ideal. I tried their sauna but personal taste I'm not a dry heat fan; comes of living in cool & damp. We grow up used to damp. In time we rust, rheumatism, arthritis, lumbago all impact. If I lived nearby I'd join the spa. It had one downside in the changing area leaving the spa: the ceiling air con blew cold air. It may be ok in ambient temperature say 30c but cool days make it unpleasant, it should blow warm on cool days for comfort or off. I'm Taurean I like comfort. Taureans are obstinate, exasperatingly self-righteous, ultraconservative, unoriginal, argumentative, querulous bores, stuck in self-centered ruts. I'll retain my bad points. We did mess about on their golf course. The best of us lot are lousy golfers. But what a fun way to pass a few hours with curious kids. The food had high & a few lowlights; l'll be picky: chef must focus on making soups more intense tasting, those we had were on the wrong side of tasty. Salad leaves (Caesar salads) must be stored to stay crisp & fresh. A nightly gripe was long delays in service post ordering evening meals due to kids being tired, same for repeat drink orders. Those who had steak (rump at extra charge) said first rate. My sea bass night 1 & haddock (fish n chip) mains night 2 were very good. I had the haddock with champ over chips. The champ was under-seasoned, lukewarm yet the haddock was perfectly seasoned before cooking. It was the finest lightest battered haddock I've enjoyed in so very long. It was also smoked but didn't say so on the menu. I was pleased, others may dislike smoked fish. A live duo played Saturday night. Too loud for me. I felt the guy was in pain and wished to inflict us too. I did Taureans proud I stuck it a half hour, only to flee partially & temporarily deaf. Breakfasts great, but like most hotels the sausage, bacon, eggs, black pud were all cheap stuff. With their buying power they should strive for free range and say so. That apart if you don't find something to your taste here you're likely the problem. To be picky croissants were pretty solid, I prefer lightness. The coffee tasted fab. We ordered poached & fried eggs & mushrooms: all good. Breakfast pancakes for kids would go down well if they could? We had great tasting afternoon coffees from their Costa bar. It's pricy, well over £3 for small Americano, lattes & cappuccinos. Even Irish Ferries Costa is cheaper! While latte shouldn't be near the cost of a pint of beer there's two sides: guests need a deal but this well staffed, cosy hotel must profit. It's not beyond creativity to offer tea/coffee/cake deals to sweeten this? After all it has ingredients, chefs, professional kitchens, just need the will (oh and my fee if you use my ideas). Complimentary coffee & tea at check out was great too. Great staff push it to 5 star. read more
