After a week long solo eurotrip, I wanted to treat myself to a good meal. Paris is the second most Michelin starred city and does not lack good eats. Like my trip, I did not plan anything and had no reservations. After being rejected by a few restaurants, the host at Racines was gracious enough to let me dine, with the condition that I had one hour to eat. Deal. The restaurant is located in a high traffic area. The restaurant is small but very cozy. The small menu is presented on a blackboard were the waiter explained each dish (in pretty good English). To start, I ordered their signature vitello tonnato. This is a traditional dish made from sliced veal and mayo/tuna sauce topped with capers. This was my first time having this classic dish and I fell in love. The veal which was slow braised in a vegetable broth over night, had a great texture and flavor. I cleaned out the entire plate and licked every bit of the rich tuna and mayo sauce. For my second dish, I ordered the parmigiana - deep-fried sliced eggplant filling, layered with cheese and tomato sauce, then baked. The skin of the eggplant was perfectly crisp and ricotta cheese went well with the fresh tomato sauce. It was topped with another type of cheese which I do not remember, but it really loved it as well. My last dish was the garganelli pasta. This was served with braised beef cheek, parmesan cheese, and olive oil. The dish came out piping hot. This was seriously one of the best pastas I have bad. The beef cheek was tender and the sauce was rich. The portion was extremely big and I pretty stuffed after finishing the dish. My meal at Racines was one of the best I have ever had. Traditional dishes were made with fresh and well sourced ingredients. Service was attentive and the waiters were knowledgable about each dish. The prices are extremely reasonable as well. Racines just earned their one Michelin star and for good reason. If you want a great Italian meal in Paris, I highly recommend Racines.

Food was delicious and thoughtfully prepared and their setting is adorable and intimate. I had no service to access Google translate so my server went above and beyond and explained every menu item to me! Service was terrific and I really enjoyed everything I ordered.

Seeing that the reviews were excellent, we decided to give it a try. We were stunned with the friendliness of the staff and their willingness to help us even though we did not speak French. I was seated in the backroom which was all high tables and very quiet. Notre Pâté en croûte - This was great. A slice of bread with chunks of duck and other meat with pickled items on the side (which I always love!) and a little bit of lettuce. It is not like a spreadable paté. Capra (salade) - this was a large salad with three large fried goat cheese balls. I had to take much of it with me. It has a variety of ingredients which don't necessarily go together but you can mix and match with each bite. They have a QR code to their website for the English menu if you need. I was stopped at the door asking if I paid which was strange because the tables in my section all have QR codes on them to pay before leaving. Do Parisians not use these? Next time: I'll sit upstairs and try some other dishes.

The food was served tapas style, and they have deals such as getting 5 (or 10!) plates at a discounted price. We ordered 5 for the two of us, but the tapas here are much larger than they are in the states, so we were STUFFED and didn't even finish three fourths of it! Well worth the money. Because it is a more authentic place, most waiters didn't speak English. They were helpful to the best of their ability, and I would highly suggest giving them a try even if you're not overly confident in your French!

Unfortunately, it was past 10 pm so a lot of places were closed. We were getting frantic trying to find a restaurant that was still open. We finally pinged this place on GoogleMaps. I have to say, this place is the definition of a hidden gem. It's a small French tapas place off on a side street that unless you were really searching, you would probably walk by it in favor of larger restaurants. I don't know if our waiter was also the owner or the sommelier, but either way, his English was limited. Luckily, my fiancee's sister speaks French so she was able to translate the menu (to an extent). As such, this was a tapas restaurant so everything was small plates and meant to be shared. I don't remember the exact name of everything we ordered, but I remember a Pad Thai, a beef dish, smoked salmon, octopus, and a fried dish (maybe calamari, but I don't remember). The food is excellent and packed with flavor. You'd be surprised how filling these little dishes can be. If you ever come to Paris, I recommend going off the beaten path for this little piece of heaven.

Unfortunately, it was too early for the tartare as they only serve that during lunch/dinner hours. So we ordered an onion soup, a dozen snails, and a cheese plate. The onion soup was really good. The cheese was nice and melty and slightly charred in some spots. I shared this with my husband but I probably could have eaten two of these on my own. The snails were great as well. But I feel like 12 is a little too much for two people, but 6 wouldn't be enough. For the cheese plate, I don't remember what was on it but I remember not liking the harder cheeses and really liking the gorgonzola. I wish we found out about this place sooner so we could have tried a proper meal. If anyone gets a chance to try the beef tartare, let me know!
