There was an assortment of wraps: schwarma, gyro, chicken, something else. I had both the schwarma and the gyro, both were stuffed full of ingredients, and good, but the gyro was my favorite. More meat in it than I've had some places as a main course! Hadn't had Rachel's food in many many years, and was concerned, given the reviews. Prices are definitely steep for what you get; however, I really appreciated being able to see them grill chicken from where I was standing as I customized my bowl. In my mind, that means food is fresher and they don't have any shady preparation practices to hide. I also liked that I was allowed to add a little Rachel's Rice to my salad bowl so it wasn't void of carbs and felt better balanced. No complaints about the service, but visiting with a colleague and trying to talk during the lunch hour was challenging because the place was full and the dining area echoes so it was loud. I decided to give them another shot tonight for dinner and I was pretty optimistic. I ordered a romaine salad bowl with chicken souvlaki, tomatoes, onions, banana peppers, and tzatziki. My order was ready on time and the service was good, but that's about as good as the experience got for me. The salad bowl was incredibly small, much smaller than I remember their salads being. They forgot my tomatoes, which isn't the end of the world, but it did suck considering I didn't get much on the salad to begin with. The meat was just okay, it was mostly just small shredded pieces, a lot of which were very dry. The tzatziki was good, though. This was a $12.85 salad, and the bowl wasn't even filled to the top. Don't order from this chain online. I swear that your order will end up at a restaurant other than the one that you preference-- it happened to us. I ordered online and clicked on the Williamsville location and my order was sent to Sheridan Drive. These wraps have a very short shelf life and by the time I picked up my order and returned home I ended up with a completely soggy mess. It was very crowded with a line that wrapped around the restaurant, but the line went really fast so we ended up only waiting 5-10 min. I got the falafel bowl, which was delicious and very filling. Falafel wasn't too salty and was seasoned well. I would get it again. The portions were very good. The dill sauce was so good. Get the fries! They're delicious!! Pains me to say I think this place has lost its touch, especially with online orders, in person you have more opportunity to correct them. Last couple of times my order has not been correct. I had been craving them for some time and finally pulled the trigger today. Now I wish I hadn't. I was all set to say they gave me standard chicken not chicken shawarma but I found 2 whole potatoes buried in the bottom of my bowl, yup two whole French fries woo hoo. However they did forget half my toppings and gave me only 1 of 2 sauces. This really crushed the dreams I hate painted of this bowl. It is all perfect. But I usually always get the same thing with slight variations depending on my mood. I would suggest getting a "rachels rice" bowel. It's basically Lebanese rice. I get it with Chicken Slovaki with Sauteed onions with olives, tomato, cucumber, cheeses and greek dressing. Depending on my mood will get hummus or tahini sauce on it. Start with your base, add your toppings, order ahead and pick-up with ease. Note that you will have to still go in at this location, but you can make a wide swoop around the inside of the store to the check-out counter and avoid having to interact with too many people. I got the salad bowl with chicken and garlic sauce. You can add extras on top of your meal. Alternatively the side dish of hummus is easily 1.5-2 cups of hummus. I would say check before you leave if you're doing takeout, as even though I ordered the side hummus they didn't have anything in the bag to dip in it when I got home, and I believe they are supposed to. Big let down from what I've heard about Rachel's. When I got to the front of the line, the guy behind the counter just stared blankly at me until I told him what I wanted. The menu said the Greek pita was fresh baked but it came out of a bag you can buy at the store. The menu recommended getting the garlic sauce with the schwarma. This was my first time at Rachel's in maybe a year, and the first time going to this particular location. I am writing this during the pandemic where everything is shut down and you can only order take-out or delivery. I ordered a chicken souvlaki through Door Dash and planned to pick it up. I ordered my meal before 5PM with an expected pick-up time of 5:20/5:30. After I parked my car, I unexpectedly saw a line out the door around the corner, which means business is good but not convenient for customers who are there to simply pick up and go home. I tried to call while I was outside and after a couple of attempts, I got hold of someone - he did not say my order was ready and actually said "we'll get it ready for you" despite Door Dash saying my order is ready, which is never appropriate. I walked inside and saw that there were a handful of people who had ordered ahead of time of Rachel's website and none of their orders were ready either. They were clearly understaffed and overwhelmed. The employee taking care of my order was clearly overworked and frustrated. The employees had order slips everywhere and could not keep up with the demand. Also, a big pet peeve of mine with regards to some of the employees making the food: if you are going to wear a surgical mask, which I feel should be saved for medical professionals such as myself so we have enough in the hospitals, YOU NEED TO COVER YOUR MOUTH AND NOSE, NOT JUST YOUR MOUTH! The mask is worthless at that point. Good grief. Long story short, an employee just prepared another order for me rather than searching for my receipt from Door Dash. The souvlaki wrap ended up being okay but they did not have the spinach wrap that I had wanted - I chose wheat instead. The fries were on the softer, mushier side and not cooked enough. Rachel's, Rachel's, Rachel's. I hate how much I love this place. My experiences here always have something wrong with them but I love the food so much that I still go at least once a week. From bad customer service to leaky ceilings, there is never a smooth visit to Rachel's Mediterranean. Oddly enough, the leaky ceiling problem was not only at the Elmwood location dripping all over my salad but also dripping on my forehead at the McKinley location! Such a weird issue for fairly new places. The Elmwood location is CRAZY at lunchtime. They have a ton of workers to keep up with the line that wraps around the whole place. Props to you guys for keeping that HUGE line always moving quickly. The fast pace all the workers are at kind of clashes with the service side of the experience. If you have any questions or specialties on your order you'll likely get an eye roll if you come at this time. They push you threw the line so quick it it feels like they're just trying to get rid of you to keep that line moving which is understandable but comes off rude. Often times, getting dressing on the side seems uncommon to these workers which I don't really know how. every time I get a salad to go I ask for dressing on the side and every time I get a weird pause from them like that was bizaar to ask lol. Every. Time. The McKinley location is being redisgned thank goodness. I never want to eat-in here unless I sit outside. Frankly, it's a mess. Was very happy to see the paper last time I went that it is being modified! All in all I may hate Rachel's. But that food. That amazing food. That amazing food that has vegan options. I love Rachel's for a workday lunch spot. It's one of the only places around downtown where I know I can get consistent, fresh, healthy food (feature down the street may do healthy, but they don't really do flavor the way Rachel's does). Rachel's continues to deliver pretty good food during the pandemic, with rare exceptions. All of that being said: I am starting to get frustrated with being asked what I want on my bowl in a crowded line, while stickers on the floor are asking me to keep 6 feet from others. Do I cram against the person in front of me to get my garlic sauce, or do I wait and listen to the sticker and ignore the visible annoyance of the person behind the line? We're all adjusting. I'm fine with waiting a little longer for my food so we can do it in a safe way. You can get a bowl, pita wrap, salad or pita chip bowl and then add the protein, veggies and condiments of your preference. I usually go for the pita wrap or the bowl. I'll get the chicken and all the veggies. Top that with feta cheese and tzatziki sauce = heaven! Why four stars?! I feel that the seasoning is not consistent between visits and if you go during lunch time on a weekday be ready for a long line.
