Quick question if anyone out there knows. Did this place used to be "JR's" in Livermore? Back in the day-OMG- around 40 years ago I was the drummer in a Country band (Bob Jackson Band) and we used to play at JR's. Back then that was a real down to earth kind of place. We always played one set of slow dancing music for couples. That place had a traditional old school vibe and good folks were the rule not the exception. Came in with friends. After we ordered drinks, some man walks in and yells at my friend for not saying hello to him. He accused her of looking at him without saying hello or responding when he spoke to her when they were outside. We had been inside the whole time and never saw the guy. He walked past us and behind the bar and poured himself a drink which tells me he works there. The staff did nothing while he yelled at her and then continued to talk crap about her behind the bar. We obviously won't be back. Maybe that was the point? Disappointing. read more

Such a fun place!!! The owners and staff are so amazing. There are many local parties held here as the owners are so accommodating! They will help you map everything out and have wonderful recommendations on any catering and sweet items such as cupcakes cakes etc! They have a lot of fun live music nights and even open jam. I came here this Friday with some family and friends. The drinks were decently priced and the live band that was playing was pretty good. They have 2 pool tables, a jukebox and a decent sized dance floor. The crowd here was majority 40-50 year olds, our group was a combination of 40-somethins and a few of us 80's babies. You can tell they put a decent amount of money in what used to be Babe's to make it R Place. BUT I am going to say what a lot of people have said already, I felt like I was unwelcome at THEIR PLACE. The lady bartender was not very friendly, we spent well over a hundred and fifty bucks in about an hour and a half, put a flippin smile on your face would ya?!? I had a good time despite the pissy people that I just in-turn ignored. I may be back again just to play pool but wouldn't mind having people be a little bit more welcoming. read more

The quintessential dive bar. Livermore's very own lovable one, with excellent music and reasonable libation prices. Getting clobbered over the head for the price of booze gets old. I was in there last Thursday with a friend--had two margaritas, she had two glasses of chard (poured to the top of the glass). Total bill before tip was $10.00. As of this writing there's an excellent blues band every other Thursday. I have also heard some other excellent bands on the weekends. Other musical adventures occur on other nights. Low key, casual. and lively, the age range of the crowd ranges from upper 30s to lower 60s and it all seems to work. Kudos to the new owner who swooped in and bought the place a couple of years ago. She did a nice job of breathing life into what was once a pretty dead location. Pool tables too, though I don't think they are used during band performance. read more

While waiting on some burgers at a place across the street, I decided to give R Place another try. Gone was the $3 pints. I was there at 5:30 on a week night. Saw no evidence of a happy hour price, so I am guessing the $4.50 was the usual pint price. Also, there were 3 TVs on, but none of them on sports. Who watches a hunting channel in a bar? I guess they do at "Their Place". I was greeted with the same sour looks. "Who is this guy, and what's he doing in "Our Place"? It's to bad; based on some of the positive reviews, I should fit right in here. I'm a blue collar former Marine. A downtown resident. Surely there was room for me in "Their Place". But alas there wasn't. And I won't trouble "Their Place" again. BTW: Recently read where a guy was stabbed in the bathroom by a bunch of thugs. The service was okay. I was there to check out a band I was going to rehearse with. I'm a bit shy so I just took a seat at my own table. 2 older guys (one was 51) were hitting on me the entire time. I'm 28. It was a little creepy. They left like an hour later and asked if I wanted to go with them. I guess if you're with company, the place is great. As a young lady going by myself, I would prefer it to not be so dark if they're going to be creepy old men trying to flirt around with me. read more

A friend of a friend wanted to go here because a band she really liked was playing. This was my first time going to R-Place and it definitely has a dive bar-lite thing going on. The bartender was knowledgeable of the beers on tap and in bottles, but was not particularly friendly. However since it was a Friday night I thought this was understandable because I figured he was probably just really tired. I got an Angry Orchard Cider for $4 which isn't bad for a bar when it's not happy hour. My friend got a ginger ale for $1. The music was realllllly loud and that was before the live band started playing. Once the band started playing, I got a huge headache. It was WAY TOO LOUD. I couldn't even hear my friend when she leaned in a few inches away, it was that loud. Also, the clientele is a little creepy. Some weird guy started talking to me, and maybe he was just being friendly but I'm only in my twenties and he was like in his fifties. It made me a little uncomfortable. Speaking of which, I didn't get carded. I'm under 30 and I definitely don't look 30 (although I noticed they started calling again a little later). That is not good. If you're allergic to cigarette smoke, I would avoid this place. The place was thick with the stench of it, and I could barely breathe. It wasn't a terrible experience but I definitely wouldn't come here again, and certainly not if I were alone! read more

I went to R Place this past Sunday to enjoy some live music. I got there a bit before 6PM. They have great prices on drinks. The bartender is very efficient and friendly. Sunday night is jam night, so local talents come to play. The first group to play sounded great for their first song. Loved their music. However, after the first song, the sound wast turned down, because the rest of the songs they played could barely be heard. They turned down the entire band, but the singer was turned down the most. The next "group" was the host. He did a solo and then was joined by the drummer from the first band and a bass player. They sounded good, but again, you could barely hear the singer. Really did not like how the sound was turned down AT ALL! I'm not sure why they turned down the sound so much after that first song. It really sucked. Eventually, another group, who was definitely NOT turned down, joined the solo singer. In fact, their sound HAD BEEN cranked up. They performed well and I liked their music, but I felt robbed of hearing the prior performers. After reading the other yelps, I guess this place is not the place to "jam" unless you are one of the bars "favorites"! They seriously need to get someone in there that knows how to promote music and pick performers and hosts. read more

Love this place. The staff is great. It's a comfortable environment. Drinks are reasonable. The valley could use more spots like this. So, the crowd's a little older but to me that just means I'm not going to be bothered with the nonsense you'd see with a younger crowd, drunk fools, fights, etc. And, they're huge supporters of local, live music! I find myself going here a LOT more nowadays. This is the type of place that really grows on you and you can't help but wonder what's going on here when you're cruising downtown. The staff rocks, all of them, and they really know how to run things smoothly. The patrons here are very friendly as well. It's an older crowd (I'm 25), but they will gladly walk up to you and strike up a conversation. Seriously, don't let Babe's old reputation influence your opinion on R-Place. This place is always fun, no matter what day of the week you go. They always have live music, too! read more

It's a bar that's about the music. This is a great place to hear blues, R&B (old style) and dance. That's a good thing as long as you know that going in. It's not an Ultra lounge. Go to Sanctuary on First Street for that. If you want to hear the local music talent like I do, this is the place. The crowd is not an overly 20 something bunch but they are represented too. I enjoy it and I find the people very friendly. I am amazed at how much great musical talent there is in Livermore. I had a Call Drink "Single Malt and soda" - $9.00 Not sure what well drinks are or if they have Happy Hour. I'll find out. There is a pizza place next door and I see lots of folks bringing pizza in. The owners seem very committed to the Music Jam scene. I was there on Sunday night to see what the Blues Jam was about. It was exactly what I hoped. Each guitar, bass, congo, drum, keys or, yes, Harmonica! player got a few songs and was backed by excellent house musicians or other jammers. Soloing was traded and vocals were shared. A few minutes between personnel changes and the next set was cooking. A VERY HIGH LEVEL of tightness and skill was on display.. I was at R-place 2 mondays ago.I had worked all day and stopped by for a drink.There was about 10 people there.I ordered a drink and went to the jukebox to play some music ,I ask the bartender to please turn up the music Then I heard Phil(new manager) say move over fat boy, so we can turn it up.I wasn't in the mood to hear that.This all stems from Phil's Superbowl pool from last year.I came in last year around Superbowl. Phil asked me if I wanted to get on the pool.I started to check it out and found out it was $600.00 missing from the pay off. After a while Phil said $200,00 is for the bar food on Superbowl sunday.So I asked him about the other $400.00, that went to Phil.So $600.00 off the winnings. It also took Phil a month and a half to pay the winner ,which, I know well.Phil pulled this same scam at Railroad bar in town. Phil had a golf tournament with 2 warrior tickets and a raffel ,but at the end of this scam no warrior tickets /no raffel ,the cost was 120.00 to play golf.This was another great day for PHIL,Phil made alot of money. ,I'm so tired of Phil and his ways. he is killing this business.I've talk to the owners about Phil ,but he's still there.I will not be there or my family and friends any more,until PHIL IS GONE! This was a solid 4 star bar,but that was before Phil.I've known the owners for 30 years a great family.I was there for the opening,It hurts to write this ,but I hope the owners give some thought to this.Phil is loosing lots of customer's. read more

I really hate to write this review because R Place has been my "go to" since I moved into the neighborhood and I have always enjoyed it! I was in on Friday, June 10 and we only had water since we were driving. I gave my credit card to the bartender -- thinking one of us would have a drink -- but we only had water. I tipped the bartender $20! When I collected my credit card at the end of the night, he handed it back and verbally confirmed there was no charge AND I never singed a credit card slip. There is a $40 charge on my card. Which of course I will dispute but seriously -- I have to go through a hassled for $40. Unfortunately, I won't be going back. read more

My husband and I went to R Place for the first time last night (a Saturday). First, from the outside I thought that it was going to be dive bar, but it was surprisingly clean. Second, the band was great, though there was hardly anyone in the place. Very surprising for 11 pm on a Saturday night. Third, the bartender seemed friendly enough. My only complaint, they've got a pool table but when we asked the bartender if we could use it, he said the owner said "No.". WTF? Why have a pool table if you're only going to use it for displaying a flower arrangement? Very strange. Since no one was dancing, we left after we finished our beers. I'm new to the Livermore area and I am so happy that I found this place! It is a great place to see live music. I drink wine and the pours are always generous. The people are friendly and the music is great! They have great live rock and roll music, no cover charge and plenty of room to dance. I'll keep coming back.
