When I made my initial phone call to schedule an appointment to have a crown replaced, I was not judged whatsoever when I let it be known that I hadn't been to a dentist in 7 years. Also, they were able to get me in the very next morning! Brittany, Dr. Tom's Dental Assistant was so sweet. She made sure I was informed, prepared for what was coming next. From my x-rays to my time in the chair, she made sure I was comfortable and answered all of my questions. She is personable and found ways to relate to me, which I appreciate very much. She is an amazing asset to their team! Jessica worked the best magic with my insurance and was able to get them to cover an additional $450 that I thought I was going to have to pay. THANK YOU, JESSICA!! Dr. Tom was personable, gentle, and I also felt zero judgment from him. He took his time, he gave me multiple options, and was confident in his work, which made my anxiety ridden brain feel much better. He is funny and easygoing, maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but I vibed just fine with him. I appreciated him referencing his own wife or sister when saying, "If you were my sister, this is what I would do." This is exactly how I feel about the people I care for and would have said the same thing. I guess my insurance had changed because I had been comming there for years with no problem, initially to see Dr Ross. I decided to cancell untill I could figure out what was going on. They charged me a $60 cancellation fee which I paid. Shortly after, I had to go out of town to another state where I used to live. I had a great dentist there, so I had GFD send my xrays to him. Later that day his office called to tell me I didn't need any fillings. They suggested I call GFD and try to find out why they said I needed 3 fillings. I did call them, but honestly I did not fully understand their answer, perhaps because of the jargon. I think they said something like one tooth needed a filling and the other two were not as bad but still needed "care". I am now in search of another Dentist in Roanoke.

Out of the three, Hunting Hills Family Dentistry was approved by my health insurance plan. Not only this, but for years they have been voted "Best Dental Group in Roanoke" by readers of The Roanoker Magazine. So I decided to go with them, and gave them a call to make an appointment. On my first appointment the receptionist gave me a warm, friendly, and welcoming greeting, made a copy of my health insurance plan card, and had me fill out their new patient paperwork. I did so as I sat in their comfortable furniture of their reception room. When my name was called, I went with a dental assistant who took me to an examination room where she asked me some other questions about my dental history and took x-rays of my teeth. Throughout this session she was very warm, kind, and friendly. Afterwards, my dentist came to examine my teeth. He had a wonderful personality and gave me the good news of having no cavities and answered any questions I had for him. Today I had my second appointment, this time with the dental hygienist to clean my teeth. She was also very friendly and nice, and kept me informed of all she was doing, effective ways of brushing and flossing, and gave me the choice of having a fluoride varnish treatment applied, mentioning that the price for this is not covered by insurance. I went ahead and had it done. She then scheduled my next teeth cleaning appointment in 6 month time and gave me a bag filled with lots of teeth care goodies. Right after this I went to the receptionist and paid for the fluoride treatment. Overall, this dental office has far exceeded my highest of expectations and I highly recommend it for its welcoming environment and supportive staff.

He apologized saying he was making a note of it so I was relieved to hear that message. I was pleased that for my recent appointment; I WAS able to schedule the appointment by calling on August 6th and got one for August 12th. I did not have to pay in advance. I went ahead and tried online to schedule a filling that needed to be done. On Monday, August 17, 2026; another appointment scheduler, left a voicemail message; that again I am NOT able to schedule the filling I need in advance. I called the office to find out why I need to again schedule on the same day or pay hundreds in advance when I JUST scheduled an appointment in advance with no prepayment required? The clerk on the phone could not answer that question. That person said that the office manager would speak with me but that person has not called. Additionally, on 2 different occasions work done was not claimed with my insurance. The first time the work was not submitted to insurance was a few years ago on one of the first crowns I had done in this office. The second time was just recently when my cleaning was not claimed to my insurance. For a department that is always wanting me to pay ahead and is concerned about money, their failure to file claims have cost the practice over $1,000 in work I had done. I am hoping I am the only patient that this is happening to. It also makes me wonder if the billing they did do was accurate? Unfortunately, the business staff at Hunting Hills Dentistry have led me in different directions and I need to get the work done on my teeth without disinformation that they have repeatedly told me. My dentist Dr. Smith is excellent and so are the hygienists but the front-line business staff and management need more training on consistency in information given to patients and accurate billing procedures.
