Robert and R&D Construction saved our retaining wall. When our street's storm drain needed repair, we had no idea how critical the timing would be. With the record rainfall we've had this year, Robert's work quite literally prevented what could have been a catastrophic (and expensive) failure of our retaining wall. Is Robert busy? Yes. If you have a sewer issue, call Robert. It's just that simple. Robert is the guy all the other sewer people call when they run into trouble, he's that good and experienced. The house I bought in August was built in 1954, it had a type of sewer piping called Orangeburg, which city of Tacoma does not require disclosure of. Orangeburg is basically a multi-layer paper tube that's been soaked in tar to waterproof it. It has a longevity of about 35-50 years. My Orangeburg started blistering in November, which meant that the sewer waste was slowing down. Robert came out, ran a camera and let me know that the blistering wasn't terrible at that time but it was all going to have to be replaced. I had 80 ft of Orangeburg to replace with PVC through pipe bursting, and another 80 ft of concrete piping which was silting up and needed CIPP lining. Robert gave me a really good quote. But I wanted to hold off as long as possible because it wasn't going to be cheap even with his excellent quote. My luck ran out in April, and I had to do the repair. When he opened up my sewer system, we discovered that the Orangeburg ran under a concrete pad under the shed in my backyard, which the city schematics did not show. Robert was able to tear the shutdown and the concrete pad out inrecord time, even though it was significantly more complicated than just a regular pipe bursting. All throughout it he kept me appraised of what was going on, we worked out solutions to problems that cropped up (there were lots of other issues that came up and I won't bore you with the details), he kept city of Tacoma in the loop, and it was all professionally done. Everything works great now and I don't have to worry about my sewer system for the next hundred years. Do yourself a favor: call Robert if you have sewer issues. He's the guy you want. read more

Robert and his R&D Construction Crew deserve a 5+. We had a bad situation that wasn't cared for by the first company who dealt with our broken sewer line. We were very frustrated and couldn't afford to continue hiring companies for a temp fix. From the minute we contacted Robert, he was responsive, attentive and had the utmost professionalism and customer service that we had seen. He successfully provided a temporary fix until we could get the entire sewer line installed. We had a situation following the fix that was due to toilet paper getting hung up on a jagged edge which caused a back-up. After reviewing the quotes, we opted for the entire line replacement (it was $2k less than another quote we received elsewhere!) Work was quick and clean. About two weeks from quote to complete. I've repeatedly hired R&D Construction for my projects, primarily for backhoe work. They've come through on other jobs as well. They've used their backhoe for several purposes: removing overburden to expose the naturally deposited soil underneath; trenching through overburden, human-made deposits and natural deposits so that we could map them; and removing and replacing steel plates at the beginning and end of the day, respectively. All were done incredibly well to suit our needs. They really listen. They are incredibly observant. In addition, they have laid down and compacted gravel on a driveway after we completed our studies (that driveway turned out incredibly nice, especially considering it was gravel). They also quickly and efficiently repaired storm drain pipe. R&D Construction does great work. Our Portland office recommended them and I was happy that they did. Hired R&D Construction to replace the sewer line from my house to the street (about 65 feet). They were on top of things all the way -- got the permit, located all utilities, and then did the job on schedule in one day -- they used a 'pipe bursting' method and there was minimal disruption to my yard. They dug two holes, one at each end of the new pipe location, and strung the pipe from one end to the other. No problems. Their price was pretty good as well.
