It's a large supermarket chain with deli, bakery departments, plus health, fuel center and beauty products. Since it's not too far from the interstate, this Costco gas station is in a fairly good and convenient location. Costco is popular and busy in general. The Costco in Duluth is one of the busiest Costco stores I've visited anywhere. This Costco gas station has the most pumps I've seen at any Costco gas station that I can recall (or perhaps tied with the most I've seen). It has 18 pumps. There are six lanes with three pumps per lane. Costco's fuel pumps are designed so you can pull up to any pump, regardless of which side your gas cap is on. The pump hoses are long enough to reach over or around most vehicles. Like every other Costco gas station I've been to, this one offers only two types of Kirkland Signature Gasoline: Regular 87 and Premium 93. Costco gas prices always beat the competition, so if you want the lowest-price gas, Costco gas stations are the place to go. Just note that Costco gas stations are strictly for filling up only, nothing else. There's nothing to wash your windshield, no air for your tires, and no convenience store. Costco uses Top Tier Detergent Gasoline and you can tap to pay with your card or phone. Fill-ups are fast, efficient, easy, and low-cost. Many customers have not yet noticed that each pump has a corresponding pump light that can be seen by all drivers waiting in line. When a pump is actively being used, the light turns red. When a pump is not actively being used, the light turns green. When it's green, the next customer waiting in line can drive forward to the next open pump in the line he/she is in. In order to use the gas pumps at Costco, the customers must have a membership card (which can also be a Costco brand credit card) that they have to scan/insert at the pump to begin the transaction. All you get here is fuel and nothing else.

I've experienced several problems at this deli, but today's incident crossed the line from poor customer service into a potential food safety concern. While preparing my sub, the employee used the knife she had been spreading mayonnaise and mustard with and accidentally scraped it across the tomatoes. A large piece of tomato ended up on my sandwich. I immediately told her that I have a tomato allergy and could not eat anything that had come into contact with the tomatoes. Instead of remaking the sandwich, she simply removed the tomato and in the process smeared the Pitt off the tomato across the mayo, wiped it onto the sandwich paper that she then sat the bread on top of with tomato now on the outside of the sandwich... and still going to be used to wrap my food, and continued preparing the sub as if nothing had happened. Cross-contact with allergens is a serious issue, and simply removing the visible tomato does not make the sandwich safe for someone with an allergy. When I asked her to replace the paper and remake the sandwich, she responded with a noticeable attitude, as though my request was unreasonable. At that point, I told her not to worry about it and decided to take my business elsewhere. This isn't an isolated incident. I've consistently encountered employees at this deli who come across as dismissive, nonchalant, and unconcerned with customer service. I've already brought these issues to management on previous occasions because I believe in giving businesses the opportunity to improve before leaving public reviews. Unfortunately, the same attitudes and behaviors continue. Customer service can always be improved, but food safety--especially when it involves allergens--is not something that should ever be treated casually. I sincerely hope management takes this seriously before someone with a more severe allergy is harmed.

This seems to be connected to a long term renovation project in the store, which has created a situation where the entire location has been in a state of disrepair for a while now. The result is inconsistent inventory with empty shelves and certain items out of stock, and a noticeable lack of cleanliness in the store. Today, for example, there was a strong stench of rotting dog/cat food in the entrance area of the store. This was once a great Publix and it's in a prime location, so hopefully they can get back on track.
