One of several sandwich shops on North Lane, which probably has the highest concentration of…read moresandwich shops I've ever seen in one area! Challenge Sandwiches has a pretty pink and white shop front that would befit a charming little cupcake shop making it stand out from the others with their stereotypical take away exterior. And I must say I do find the name rather amusing. They sell baguettes, wraps and paninis and also sell a range of sundries, such as samosas and bhaji. I admit to only having had a bite of one of their sandwiches, which at the time tasted amazing but this was at stupid o' clock in the morning with a rumbling tummy after a boozy night so I suspect most anything, especially containing melted cheese, would have tasted pretty good. The main thing that stood out for me was the customer service. There were a bunch of hyperactive drunken waxed-chested low cut t-shirted lads whooping and gallivanting around the limited space inside Challenge Sandwiches and generally exhibiting that notorious student lack of awareness of anything other than their own hilarity. The blokes behind the counter took it very much in their stride and watched bemused. They then proceeded to give me a free packet of crisps - score!

I think the guy knows my regular order... Donner Kebab, garlic sauce, no salad, just tomatoes…read more.. Thanks Challenger! As you can tell from that... I'm a regular. I haven't really gotten any of their other sandwiches, but the Donner is so good that I've just been sticking to what I know... maybe I'll be adventurous one day. What makes it so good is that they pack it with meat... PACK. I like meat is all. Seriously though... this place WOULD definitely get 4 stars, but just recently I went around Europe for a while and France and parts of Germany sell their Donner Kebabs on Panini-like bread instead of the toasted wrap they put it in here... Oh MY GOOD GOD... like these kebabs couldn't get any better... they totally did. I still go to Challenger as my choice in Leeds, especially since it's so close to my place, but after having a legit Kebab in some bread else where in Europe... I can't look at any other kebab the same way... Sorry Challenger.

If you're looking for choice, Tasty is a surefire bet when it comes to sandwiches in Headingley. As…read moresoon as you enter the modest downstairs area you can see the huge board of options laid out before you, and a list of 10 special named choices that I presume are their recommendations. As I entered the shop there was already a bit of a queue but it seemed to be swift moving and they had about four staff members on so it was all looking good. I opted for the mozzarella, basil pesto and tomato panini and asked for chorizo as an extra. It came to £4.10 with the added chorizo, which is a little pricier than expected, but still comes under the "lunch for under a fiver" bracket! Whilst I was waiting I noticed some rather intriguing milkshake drinks, so I'm thinking I may have to treat myself next time I'm in. The panini took about five minutes plus to arrive, which was not a problem as I had a nice seat to sit in whilst I waited. You can opt to eat in, upstairs and peruse the free wifi if so inclined, but on this occasion I wasn't stopping. The staff were lovely and friendly and the service was really swift given the volume of orders that were coming in. My sandwich was really delicious, a generous amount of melted mozzarella was the real highlight, but my only complaint was that the tomato made the bread a little too soggy to eat in places. Just something to consider for next time!

Tasty is a fitting, if unimaginative name for this sandwich joint off Otley Road in the heart of…read morestudentville. They pride themselves on using fresh, healthy ingredients to create unique sandwiches, and they succeed for the most part. You can order by phone, online or simply go in and pick your sarnie up. Or, if you've got too much time on your hands (like I did) go and eat your sandwich in the lounge area upstairs and take advantage of the free wifi. You'd think that such a place would perhaps be on the upper end of the pricing spectrum, but there are no such issues - the most you'll pay for a footlong sub (just one of the many choices of bread) is £3.50. One final point - though it brands itself as a fresh, healthy, classy sandwich shop, its best offering is undoubtedly the down-to-earth and shamelessly unhealthy cheese-dog. Mmm.

PJ's aka "The college Chippy" has only one major failing that i can see: Its too good. Situated…read moredistressingly close to University accommodation PJ's can rival the post office for its waiting time. However pick your moment well and you will not regret it. (I went for an appropriate Good Friday fish based lunch and found not a soul around!!). The sandwiches are stuffed as full as humanly possible, there's a varied menu (what you'd call traditional for a chippy i suppose). Now the fish was a total revelation for a chippy, perfectly battered and full of flavour. And whats not to love with traditional chip shop chips. All packaged together with the friendly sort of "family run" atmosphere that many of Leeds new eateries are loosing i found PJ's hit the spot perfectly (see me resisting the urge for a "hooked" or "hook line and sinker" line!) So... Friendly, good value for money and a good bit of seating inside compared to its competitors on this road. If it didn't suffer a little from 'on' and 'off season' influxes i'd have no complaints at all !!

Drawing in a loyal stream of customers looking to break up the long (I'm sure it used to feel it at…read morethe time) slog from the student accommodation on Burley Road up to University with a pit stop for a cheap sandwich or greasy fry-up, PJ's knows where its strengths lie. Resisting temptation to jazz up its menu with deli counter ingredients or pricey full meals, this takeaway instead sticks to its tried and tested formula of fish and chips, sandwiches and breakfasts, and does very well in the process. I had the breakfast a few times back in my meat eating days and it certainly did the job - generous, greasy and cheap - and I've more recently grabbed a few sandwiches on the go that fitted into the same category: filling, quick and cheap food that's not going to win any awards but is perfectly palatable nonetheless. Don't go at lunch time if you're feeling hungry - the sudden influx of students from the nearby College mean queues often stretch out the door.
